As a myheritage user, I can say that the chromosome browser has great potential, but it's very underutilized. I would like to have the site match ONLY triangulated people with a person - so I can see which people share same DNA segments, and maybe even add a filter to minimum size of segment triangulation. This really helps figure out the common pathways in the DNA match.

I have had a terrible experience with My Heritage DNA algorithm. I just don't have a lot of confidence in their results.

Starling Reece Greetings. All genetic genealogists have argued that estimates are the least reliable in ancestryDNA testing and MyHeritage is the worst. One genetic genealogist has argued that estimates are for entertainment purposes only and people should forget estimates. All genetic genealogists have argued that people should be studying their genetic cousin matches as they are accurate and if you want to confirm or learn more about your ancestry you should be studying your matches as by learning about your cousin matches’ ancestors, in turn you will learn about yours.

Do you mean the ethnicity results or the cousin matches? I don't have any problems with the cousin matches and have found folks there that aren't elsewhere.

Hi family history fanatics. I did a test with myheritage and ancestry. Myheritage seems to have way higher cM matches for me and seems easier to navigate. Maybe it is just that I am used to it. My family is from Russia originally. Also, on myheritage I found my grandmothers death certificate in UK, and also information on my great-grandad sister (apparently on myheritage they even have World War 2 Russian archives). With my ancestry - free account doesn't show anything for me and I have low cM matches :( I really hoped that I would be able to find so much more information on ancestry. I have also relatives in Ukraine and some apparently from Estonian/Russian border. Do you guys know if ancestry has metric church records of the Russian Empire (prior to 1917, before Russian Revolution)? There is also a green leaf with my grandad, when I click on it, it is asking to pay £10.99 per month. Don't know if it is worth it? Does ancestry have any good records on Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia....? It seams that Ancestry is more of a USA / UK testing company at the moment. Just a thought, can you do a video, tips for those who are like me from eastern europe and other parts of the world? That would be really helpful.

My heritage has a chromosome browser but they have by far the worst Algorithm for DNA testing from all the major DNA companies.

@@001islandprincess there matches are ok but thier database isn't as large as Ancestry so i prefer ancestry because of its genetic communities features, and shared matches, and true lines.

I agree that the ethnicity algorithms are only for entertainment purposes. While Ancestry may have a larger database, they don't have all of my cousins. I found folks from my Hoppe line only in Myheritage. I'm not a fan of many of the tools Ancestry keeps putting out as they're often misleading. However, there are many I do like, such as color coding. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pH2ul4WvoLZgfas

How accurate are the family connections? Like when the system suggest them to be from your family, or a persons family, then are they indeed from your family? To what degree of confidence? Like in your case 4th great grandfather.

It all comes down to the quality of research on my trees and the trees of other individuals. If I have built a quality family tree and another researcher has built a decent one, then I'll use the Chromosome Browser on MyHeritage to add more evidence to our conclusions.

You didn't cover productivity. Which tool gives you the most matches with common ancestors? I am on both platforms and was thrilled when Theories of Relativity came out. Suddenly I had a dozen new cousins to add to my tree. But not long after that, Ancestry debuted their ThruLines and now, a year later, I have 800 new cousins through Ancestry. Very recently, MyHeritage ran their theory again after a year of hiatus and I got one or two more cousins on my tree from MyHeritage. I know this is maybe more a function of the database size than the interface functionality that you are reviewing, but I have found my productivity much higher on Ancestry. I am finding some European matches on MyHeritage so I am focusing back on MyHeritage now.

The problem with your experience is that not everyone has the same volume of returns. I come from generations of small families (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnunm3udZpiEnas) and I many of my matches have extremely small cMs, which increased the chances of them being false matches (on both platforms). So thank you for your feedback, I'm truly happy for you (a bit jealous actually). I hope others have your experience rather than mine.

Disagree...the ”hitrate”, the share of suggestions that actually is correct is a lot higher on Ancestry. It might be different for those in e.g. USA but for Sweden it is a huge difference. I think MyHeritage does not take the patrinymikon in consideration as well as Ancestry does. And we in Sweden uses exact birthdate, and that is something MyHeritage often miss. For me, with Swedish ancestors, Ancestry win.

My grandparents emigrated from Sweden and I have the same type of issue with MyHeritage vs Ancestry. Also, the other side also came from a small group of English folk emigrating in the late 17th century. Same problem though the names are similar mostly from a small number of starting families and confounded by a naming practice of using the prior generation first names for offspring.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with both companies. I can only speak from my experience and the tools that make the most sense to me. And yes Anna-Karin... I would really like to track down my Swedish ancestor. However, I'm facing the small family tree problem. I think that William had only one child and the chances of me breaking through this brick wall are slim since he's my 2nd great-grandfather. (I hope that I'm proven wrong.)

I like Ancestry more..I've loaded my Ancestry DNA test to MyHeritage and have over 10000 matches . So just for SAG I took a test at MyHeritage results came back only half the matches. Also now I know it's just an estimate. But the ethnicity results are way different than the 5 other sites I've up loaded my dna to . mylivingdna has the most refined ethinicity results imo.

I uploaded my Ancestry DNA and family tree to MyHeritage, but I don't have any matches that connect to the Theory of Relativity tool. Must one do the MyHeritage DNA test to see the theories? My tree has about 2000 people in it. Could it be that it just isn't large enough?

I've found that many of the theories of family relativity I get are just plain wrong. Maybe it is because I have many Swedish people with very similar names but more often than not, the theory relies on a match that even it shows has a very low confidence level, often just 25%. For this reason, I've found thrulines better for my family tree. It is less likely to connect a Per Persson to another Per Persson largely because they were born at a similar time. Many of the Swedes who immigrated to the US came from the same small areas in Sweden and are quite an endogenous group. On the other side, I have relatives who immigrated from England, Ireland, etc in the late 16th century. They also have a limited pool of names used and it is often impossible to tell one John from another.

Same name individuals wreck havoc no matter where you research. The key to remember that both ThruLines and Theories are suggestions and pass from genetic matching into genealogical trees (verified and unverified). I do like (and forgot to point out) the confidence level that MyHeritage indicates. To me, if a theory has such a low confidence rating, I would be more suspicious. There isn't such a rating on Ancestry ThruLines.

Ancestry does have the problem of a large database but few people who have built their family trees. That does make it difficult for those seeking their biological parents.

Chromosome browser and triangulation tool on MyHeritage wins hands down. But to add evidence towards proving a relationship, we should look for 3 third cousins from different lines rather than close relations.
