So, this circle matching algorithm assumes that we all have a common ancestor in our trees. I would prefer to see a circle where I share common DNA with cousins who have a common ancestor in their tree that isn't in mine. That might be the key to finding a missing Xxgreatgrandparent.
@popeye12money7 жыл бұрын
+Ancestry, I understand why you removed matches that share ancient common ancestors from your matching algorithm. However as an African American Ancestry test taker, the removal of that feature from your matching algorithm, makes it extremely difficult for many of us to be able to trace our specific African ancestry, such as which tribes / ethnic groups that we share ancestry with. This is very discouraging, considering that you probably have a very small sample size of Africans in your data base in comparison to the size of your European samples. There are many African American test takers, who take the ancestry DNA test because it is their last hope for them to be able to discover their African roots. This is because unlike Europeans and others, African Americans were cut off from much of their African ancestry and there are no written records to enable them to trace their ancestry.
@LarryNathanielPhoto7 жыл бұрын
popeye12money The idea that there are no written records isn't entirely accurate. Due to contact with Europeans some people of African descent can find ancestry through property records. I would try this avenue before giving up.

I have 9000 people in my tree on Ancestry and over 170000 clues. Is there any way to change the leaf color to another active color to denote a clue from one of our circles?
@DonaldStewartOnline8 жыл бұрын
Hi CristaI, I understand your rationale for excluding matches that once matched prior to your video presentation. But please explain the rationale for subsequent exclusions of cousins that once matched after your tweakings but are no longer shown as DNA matches. In other words, I took the test after you made adjustments for the patterns your scientist found but some cousins that were found to be DNA matches were later excluded.

So when you guys recently updated DNA test on Ancestry. I had a unusual/interesting thing happen and that was with your old DNA test I had two very valid connections with your old system. So valid that they were apart of the hints and I can see the connection. Now you updated the test and I lost those connections to the way I could be able to see it by means of the old way...I would like to have that back. I would rather have more than less. It would also help other people who are in the community to create connections.

Why for DNA circles that there isn't some type of notes box to allow the person to make notes on that DNA circle? I have to put my notes with the DNA matches in the circle which makes it tedious to find my notes. A common notes application with the DNA circle would be a very nice added feature.
@AncestryUS8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion, Brent. In the meantime, may I suggest using the NOTES feature on your family tree. I find the common ancestor around whom the DNA Circle is built and put notes on their profile in my family tree. I note each of their children from whom a DNA match descends so I can track branches of the family that have tested and matches. (Crista)

It's FALSE to say that some of the purged matches did not share DNA! I lost a very real match who shares 13cM with me and 20cM (over 2 segments) with my sister (as compared at GEDmatch). We know the connection and it is not IBS. Also, I think you should place the old matches download button on the DNA main page...most people are never going to find it otherwise.

Crista ... Issue. I have 9 DNA circles shown. And I've discovered that if I click on a cousin in my long "4th cousins or closer" list that happens to belong to one (or more) of my DNA circles, then it shows that DNA circle that we share on their public page (and also how many of these circles they belong to). Well immediately I wondered how I might find all those in my circles. The thought that occurred to me, that should make it so such a search would not be unbelievably time consuming, was if I already knew one of the members in a circle then I could just click on "shared matches" on that individual's public page. That would provide a relatively short list of everyone we had in common. So All those shown in our common DNA circle should be in that "not overly long" shared matches list. I found one person who is in 4 of my DNA circles. So I went to his public page and clicked on "shared matches". There were 4 pages listing all those who we both have in common in our cousin listings. At the minimum, there should be at least 3 other individuals in our shared matches that should show up as being in one or more of our common DNA circles. But what I discovered was ... there was no one in our shared matches that belong to any of the 4 DNA circles which we share. How can that happen? How can someone who is in a DNA circle with you not not have any shared matches with you that also belong in that DNA circle (when the circle contains 3 or more members)? I suppose that another in the circle might not be a DNA match to both this other member and myself. It may they are a DNA match to just us for instance. And so they would not be found in our shared matches. I may have answered my own question. Did I answer it right?
@AncestryUS8 жыл бұрын
I actually suspect that one of those matches is in your 5th cousin or more distant list. The shared matches list only accounts for 4th cousins and closer. (Crista)

Crista ... I have this suggestion involving DNA Circles. I find that when I click on view "DNA Matches", and then if I click on a cousin and their page comes up, if they are in one of my DNA circles it tells me so on that page. My suggestion is, don't make me click on that cousin and have to go to their page to find out that they're in a DNA Circle with me, show it on the DNA Matches listing pages. That is, when I click on "View All DNA Matches", and the list of matches comes up, whoever in that list is in a DNA Circle with me, state it in the list along with possible range, the confidence level, and when they last logged in (include it there with those things ... if that's permissible).

If you have a New Ancestor Discovery for someone that is telling you that a DNA Circle exists for that person and that you are genetically related to members of that circle. Look at how they are related to the person the circle is built around and that will give you clues about where you might also be related to that person. (Crista)

DNA Circle question. My Ancestry test results were received on 11 June and 3 July for a parent’s results. My DNA Circles appeared after about a week totaling 35. Two dozen circles are through the parents of my tested parent who has yet to have a circle appear despite high matches to many in the circles. We both exceed 50,000 matches; 2000+ 4th cousins or closer, and over 130 SAH. Test results for both of us are linked to my public tree. It appears that has been the case for known family where one person administers tests for others linked to one public tree - the cousins in a family group are shown in circles. Have I missed something or do I just wait for the connections to be made for this parent?

Depends on the method of preservation. A genome was sequenced from DNA from a horse leg bone 700,000 years old. news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/06/130626-ancient-dna-oldest-sequenced-horse-paleontology-science/ _If it’s buried a few feet below the ground, the DNA will last about 1,000 to 10,000 years. If it’s frozen in Antarctic ice, it could last a few hundred thousand years. For best results, samples should be dried, vacuum-packed, and frozen at about -80 degrees Celsius. Even then, ambient radiation is likely to render DNA unrecognizable before it celebrates its millionth birthday._ www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/explainer/2013/02/dna_testing_richard_iii_how_long_does_dna_last.html

Everytime a person is born they lose 50% of each of their parent's DNA. But that still means that of those you do inherit, a distant ancestor may have carried those markers, and they can work out which through multiple genealogical trees with common links.

I have a DNA match to someone whose last name matches some of my "new ancestor discoveries", but I cannot tie any of that family to any of my existing tree. When I look at the DNA circle of this person's grandmother, it shows I match 7 of the 14 people in the circle, yet stilll no matching or even familiar names. Do I just keep working on this (I am using two trees with the last name from the original DNA match as my second tree) or should I just keep working in my own tree which still has far to go and hope for a match sometime?
@AncestryUS7 жыл бұрын
Take another look at those seven people that you match in that DNA Circle. Are they all descended from the same couple? Look laterally from there. If you aren't a descendant of this same couple, maybe you are descended from the parents or grandparents of one of this couple. Look at all the siblings of this couple. Who are they married to? Maybe you are a descendant from the parents of one of those spouses.

It depends. In order to be eligible to participate in DNA Circles, your tree has to be public. Then, you have to have at least three DNA matches, who are more distantly related to you than 2nd cousins, they each need to have a public family tree with the same ancestor in it, and you all need to have Shared Ancestor Hints to each other.

DNA Circles are dependent upon which family trees your DNA matches have their results attached to. If the tree is public and then made private, a circle (especially if it is a small-ish circle of 3-10 people) can disappear. If your DNA match, removes the tree they have their results attached to or switches which tree they are attached to, circles can disappear.

The Shared Matches feature only lists people who are 4th cousins or closer, who match both you and the match you are currently viewing. My question: What information do we need to have in the tree on this person in order to be added to a DNA circle? For example, do we have to have the first and last name with birth and death date listed exactly the way our circle matches have them listed in order for us to be placed in the DNA circle? Or, is it possible that I could have only their last name listed and I would end up in a circle with matches who had the first and last name listed? Thank you for your help.

That is correct. And, those three people have to be at least 2nd cousins to each other. So, for example, you, your aunt, and your 1st cousin can not make a circle that points to your grandmother. It's not enough to rely on AncestryDNA and Ancestry.com because their database of 500K isn't that big if you put it into context of the global population. I strongly recommend using GEDmatch.com and uploading your .txt file for analysis. I took Ancestry's DNA test, which didn't even breakdown what kind of East Asian I am, but just broad-stroked me as 100% East Asian, even though my grandma is at least 1/4 English and Scandinavian and which showed on GEDMatch.com's analyses of my DNA. Sadly, at the present, amateur genealogists must use a multi-pronged approach of investigating on their own and using countless external genetic and genealogy resources to get better results :/

So, it makes sense that the majority of your matches will be to people from the U.S. who have British ancestry back 4-8 generations ago. As the database grows and more people in the UK take the test, you will likely begin to see more matches from the UK. Krista I'm kind of baffled about something I have a cousin who her maternal grandfather and my paternal grandfather are first cousins however she and I don't come up as DNA matches
@s1019am37 жыл бұрын
is this even possible
@AncestryUS7 жыл бұрын
Yes. If you are, in fact, 3rd cousins, it is possible that you do not share any DNA. If you were able to identify and test every single one of your 3rd cousins from all lines of your family tree, you would discover that you only share measurable amounts of DNA with about 90% of them.

I'm confused on my ancestrydna results I came back 54% European west 21% great britain 20% Ireland 3% Iberian peninsula 1% European Jewish & Caususus but why can't it be broken down per region like Germany with a %. so I'm 54% European West but what regions does my DNA come from that is within Europe West?? I want a full scale break down.. just being 54% of this and 21% that doesn't tell me exactly what I am.. does Ancestry DNA break down the actual regions within these places of Europe West Great Britain Ireland Etc??

@AncestryUS7 жыл бұрын
That likely means that something in your family tree (or the family tree of one of your close family members - ie parent, sibling, etc.) is incorrect. Fix it there and it should be fixed in the circle.

This is not my family tree. My tree goes up from Janice Marie Durling, not Janice Durling. DNA made the wrong match from Daniel Durland and Sarah DeMotte.

You have provided enough in your saliva sample for the lab to make three attempts at getting enough DNA to test. The estimated date of completion is based on a successful first attempt. If 2nd or 3rd attempt is required, each can take up to two additional weeks. If it fails on the 3rd attempt, you will receive notification on your Ancestry account and be able to request a free replacement kit to provide a new sample.

what does it mean when it says a person is not in your DNA list on Ancestry? Does it mean they don't have a DNA test up, their test isn't attached to their tree or that they just aren't a match?

Ex: I visit someones profile and it sometimes shows if I am related to them and says You share DNA with Michael Jackson. We just found a relative that we didn't know existed through this DNA connection. It seems someone fathered a child during a war and no one knew! Thank you for your video explaining the Native American DNA. That answered a lot of questions for my mother and I. Our story claims that my Grandfather's father was Native American. He is listed in the Dawes rolls. I do have a question about VA inmates. The same ancestor is found in the census listed as an "inmate" in the VA in Biloxi, MS. We do not know why or how long he was there. How can I get more information on this person? I do have questions about an ancestor who has seemingly fallen off the face of Earth. He's in one census and not in the next... or any further. No burial location. No death certificate. Nothing. How can that be? Also, why would a civilian be placed in a POW camp? (I'm surprised to see that no one commented on the 50% shared DNA with a banana. I had to rewind. A.. banana! mind blown.)
@AncestryUS8 жыл бұрын
If he is in the VA, he has to have served in the military. So, check with the National Archives to see what military records they might have for him. For the person missing in the census, have you found his other family members and just not him or can you not find any of them?
@tate47838 жыл бұрын
I can't find anything on the military records that tell me why he was hospitalized. The VA won't give me any info. The next census isn't out yet. The other family yes. They are all in the next census except the father. Now it looks like she is remarried. POW? -a civilian teacher? that doesn't make sense either. Thank you for your help! These roadblocks/questions have been bothering me for years!
@AncestryUS8 жыл бұрын
If you can find the family and she is remarried, I would look for a divorce or death record between the two censuses for him. Be sure to check local newspapers in the time and place they were living. The civilian POW - where were they held? And when? (Crista)
@tate47838 жыл бұрын
Hi Crista! Thanks!! I know he was living at the VA at the time of their divorce. I wish I could figure out why he was there. Joseph was the civilian POW. He later told me he questioned his dad and other relatives but no one would give him information. I never knew my grandfather cause he committed suicide, and my great grandfather only knew his mother.

The kid is the only one who got the Dna test. I know I'm related to his dad because they have the same surname. I had Native American, Iberian peninsula, and Italy/greece. The kid had the same ethnicities. His maternal dna was Ireland, great Britain, and Europe West. Flores was the kids surname which is the same surname of my grandfather. I know it's also possible for someone on my great grandfathers side to have the same surname, but I don't know the surnames of any of my great grandfathers side.

The amount of DNA shared with this individual is 434 centimorgans shared across 23 DNA segments.

With that amount of shared DNA this person is either your 1st cousin 1x removed (meaning one of his parents is your 1st cousin) or they are your 1/2 1st cousin (meaning one of his parents is the 1/2 sibling of one of your parents). Do either of those relationships seem like they might be accurate?

Does ancestry create the circles or can we?
@AncestryUS7 жыл бұрын
DNA Circles are created automatically when three individuals who all descend from three different children of an ancestral couple (2x - 5x great-grandparent) all meet the following requirements: 1. They have a public family tree. 2. That family tree is attached to their DNA results. 3. The ancestral couple is in their family tree with names, birth dates and places that are recognized by our computers as being the same people in all three trees. 4. All three individuals share DNA with each other. Once those requirements have been met, a DNA Circle is created. At that point, anyone who matches at least two other people in the circle and meets the same requirements, will be added to the circle.

my mother has 139 4th or better cousins and yet zero DNA circles, her tree has over 1700 people on it and it is public ?
@AncestryUS8 жыл бұрын
DNA Circles are dependent upon two main factors: 1. Public family tree attached to DNA results. 2. Shared Ancestor Hints that connect you and at least two other individuals who descend from three different children of a specific ancestral couple. How many Shared Ancestor Hints does your mother have? How many of those can be clustered into groups around a specific ancestor? And, in any given cluster are there at least three children of that couple represented? Hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have further questions. (Crista)

So, I can be related to someone and share absolutely no atDNA? If we are related, it should be 6 generations back. My brother and this person would both be direct male descendants of the same person. Would this person share YDNA with my brother, or does that "disappear" too?
@AncestryUS7 жыл бұрын
You will share DNA with everyone you are related to who is closer to you than 3rd cousins. Once you reach the 3rd cousin level, the odds of whether or not you share DNA with any given relative begins to decrease. If you were able to identify and DNA test every single one of your 6th cousins (on all family lines), for example, you would only share DNA with about 10% of them.

What are centimorgans?
@AncestryUS8 жыл бұрын
+harry berry en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centimorgan
@harryberry36208 жыл бұрын
+Ancestry Wikipedia says, " It is defined as the distance between chromosome positions". But that's really not a fixed distance, is it? So might it be that if A shares 20 centimorgans of DNA with B, but shares 19 centimorgans with C ... then might it actually be that the actual length of DNA shared with C is greater than the actual length shared with B? Sounds like it could very well be. It strikes me as being almost like trying to measure physical length in the number of friendships one has. Or like using the speed of light to measure distance. But light travels slower in some media than others ... so a light year, like a centimorgan, isn't really a unit of length unless its defined for a particular medium (like "empty" space). So I guess a centimorgan really isn't the distance between chromosome positions (regardless of what Wikiprdia says) ... it sounds like its actually just something more like a counting of such positions (regardless of their physical length. So its basically a number of connections rather than an actual length measurement. Does that sound about right?

why dont i have any circles?
@AncestryUS6 жыл бұрын
In order to have DNA Circles you need to have: 1. A public family tree (it won't work if your tree is private) 2. That tree must be attached to your DNA results (check this in your DNA settings) 3. A group of at least three DNA Matches (who all match each other, not just you) who all descend from a different child of your common ancestor 4. Everyone in the group must have the common ancestors in their tree and their trees must be public as well.

It is possible to lose all DNA from a great grandparent, but unlikely. More likely in the next generation back, great great grandparents, and gets more and more likely the further you go back. There's a good video on this at Family History Fanatics "You Might Be Related Even Less to Your Ancestors Than You Thought", I'll post the link in my next post.

Keep in mind that some matches where it says they have "no tree" actually have a tree that they just haven't attached to their DNA results. If you click through to view the match, you will see if they have a public tree available to view. Also, you CAN message other users and request access to their private trees. Some people answer right away. Some may not answer for a while.

Ancestry circles are bogus, I have half siblings (according to Ancestry's DNA results) and because they are on the same tree, ( I changed his paternal relationship from biological) and now Ancestry has given him circles for the named tree parents, not the unknown DNA parent.
@AncestryUS7 жыл бұрын
If you have attached a non-biological father as your brother's primary parent in the family tree, all of his paternal Shared Ancestor Hints and DNA Circles will be incorrect. You will need to add an "Unknown Father" as the biological parent and set that parent to PRIMARY in order to fix this.
@ToniJamesDesertWindsStudio7 жыл бұрын
The half sibling status was an unexpected surprise, and as a public tree (and not the only family member on Ancestry DNA) I haven't actually added an unknown parent, because they dont' know. They are both about 80. If I change to an unknown parent , will I get his unknown biological connections?
@AncestryUS7 жыл бұрын
His DNA match list will already show his paternal biological connections regardless of whether there is a tree attached or not. If you just remove the non-biological parent relationship from him (as opposed to adding an "unknown" parent), it will remove the false circles and shared ancestor hints. Even with a public tree, no one can see living people but you (as the tree owner) and anyone you have specifically given the access to see living people. So, no one will be alerted to the change. Also, if others in the family have also taken an AncestryDNA test they will either match this brother or they won't. If they don't match him (and they know he has taken the test) they will already be on to something. If they do match him, it will be on the shared biological line and, again, they won't know any different. I hope that helps. If you have more questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask.
