In the context of a global food system and 24-hour retail groceries offering every imaginable food 365 days a year, the dictum to “eat more plants” may be dangerous to human health due to unaware excessive consumption of oxalates. Dramatic increases in calcium-oxalate kidney stones, and functional problems with digestive health, neurotoxicity (sleep, brain function), inflammation (pain, autoimmunity, cellular stress, fatigue), and connective tissue instability (osteoporosis, arthritis, vulnerability to injury) are all consistent with increased oxalate toxicity. Learn how modern food choices and meal patterns create the conditions for accumulation of oxalate in the body, and how oxalates create metabolic havoc. This session explains how modern foods and medicines increase susceptibility to oxalates; makes the case for careful attention to oxalate consumption; dispels the notion that all vegetables and seeds are healthy and safe to eat on a regular basis; and introduces the therapeutic benefits of a low-oxalate diet.

@GROID-19 resistance training. doesn't matter how good your diet is, you aren't going to put on muscle without some form of training. protein is also required of course, but that's beside the point. her muscle tone says absolutely nothing about whether "she's doing something right" in regards to diet, besides getting as much protein as any other non-impoverished modern human edit: also anabolic steroids can build you muscle without even training, but yeah point stands

Glad I found these resources. I tested positive for high oxalates last year. The ND said to avoid spinach and take some calcium citrate with meals. I didn't think much of it until I ended up in the emergency room this week. The staff could not diagnose my problem. I only put it together after reviewing your material. Cutting out spinach is not enough! I must have had severe oxalates in 2017-2018 as I experienced severe neuropathy and nerve pain. I switch to "super-foods" during that time.

My dog stole a stuffed grape leaf off the table at a party and almost died. Had all the toxic reactions and even bled when trying to Pooh. It was horrible. I am grateful though because it set me on a path to look at these toxins in vegetables. It is a lot to process, but we need to. The “healthy and plant based diet” is not necessarily so good long term.

I had a professor in the 90’s in college in toxicology class who mentioned oxalates (along with a plethora of other defensive plant compounds) as potentially harmful to humans in quantity. I mainly just avoided spinach and some night shades, save tomato, because I like it. Anyway, avoiding sugar for years I got sucked into the other “super foods” - mainly almond, turmeric and raspberries in way too high amounts. I still eat from the plant kingdom, but no lectin and in very small portions and from the low oxalate groups. She is spot on. Paleolithic man was not eating almond flour pancakes with added turmeric and covered in a cup of raspberries (like I was). Eventually I will add some things like raspberries back, but mainly in season and in small amounts.

I definitely think some people are more sensitive to high oxalate foods. When I went Paleo a few years ago and started eating berries, nuts , dark chocolate , sweet potatoes etc. I started becoming very stiff and achey. It was very scary. After a lot of research and found out about oxalates I knew it was the problem. Stopped eating them and stiffness went away. Binged on some nuts a couple years later and could barely move the next day. I've loosened up the past few months on some nuts and potatoes and cocoa powder and my knees came up stiff. So back to very low oxalate diet. My muscles and joints are very sensitive to oxalate rich foods. My brother was prone to kidney stones and I told him about oxalates as he liked nuts and chocolate. He hasn't had one since. It's real and could be affecting you and you don't realize it.

Helpful list. Thank you for sharing it :) To the High Ox. list, I wonder if Brussels Sprouts could be added? And if Asparagus is Low to Moderate Oxalates? (it seems to me that I've read both; maybe it's a variable food -? ). On a different subject, I've read in a few informal places online that Moringa Leaf (and therefore 'Moringa powdered supplements', which many people use for desired health benefits) is High Oxalate or Very High Oxalate. ~ Do you know if that can be confirmed, through some kind of verifiable semi-authoritative source? I know of a person, friendly, who probably needs to know that she's not doing her health any favors by consuming it regularly. However, I don't have a solid source to refer her to. (so that she can confirm it, for herself) For my own situation, I would like to know definitively about the Oxalates level of: pink grapefruit. It's one food that I haven't been able to drop. Or so it seems for now. Comparatively, I found dark chocolate somewhat easy to quit. My method was to temporarily use *white* chocolate as a "step down" (substitute) for approx. 4 weeks. It had to be a high quality, good tasting brand, of course. Gradually I was able to quit, both chocolates, as a daily habit. Conversely, ... I'm hoping that grapefruit - eating a whole one, every day - isn't too bad in Oxalates. However am willing to accept the truth. Unfortunately, I don't live in a locality where I can easily have access white grapefruit, which I've heard isn't so bad in oxalates. Ideally, I would like to have a choice of which grapefruit to buy. (Citrus is a food I've always loved). Anyone know about the oxalate level of pink grapefruit? -- and a source where I could confirm it, definitively? Thanks.

@gentleoldmoviefan5680
@gentleoldmoviefan5680 Жыл бұрын
I wonder if tea would be better (i.e., safer) if it were: 1) room temperature, or cold temperature, brewed -- as some delicate tea leaves allow, and 2) loose leaf tea, and not overly processed and put into a tea bag; and 3) not brewed for too long. That way, it seems to me, you'd be getting a gentle extract (a.k.a. "infusion"?), rather than consuming components from the tea leaves which are (more) aggressively stripped from it ... say from over-processing of the tea leaves and then hot-water soaking? As a possible analogy, when harsh solvents are used to extract the desired psycho-active compounds from Kava Kava (plant) root, then it has a much higher content of cytotoxic compounds in the resulting "brew". However, when slightly warm water is used instead, then the amount of cytotoxic compounds resulting (such as certain "kavains", for example) is much less. How the (green) tea is prepared might make a big difference. On the other hand, maybe this is merely wishful thinking on my part :), and regular non-herbal tea is best avoided altogether. I do know that drinking such tea, alongside food or supplements containing the B vitamins, will result in very significant reduction of the body's ability to absorb and use those B vitamins. Therefore, it's important to consume tea separate from such food, by about 2 hours at least, according to Elliot Overton. Maybe other nutrition experts will give a different interval of time, however, ... for minimizing tea's negative effect on nutrient absorption. I hope tea is OK in moderation (???) but will eventually accept whatever the true answer turns out to be . More 'layperson research' is needed, on my part, before I will hopefully find the actual answer. In the meantime, I am trying to limit my (green) tea to one serving per day, and not having it "strong brewed". It's dark chocolate that I'm having a harder time with -- giving up, that is. It's a good way to "mood alter" in the short run, but I suspect it's very unhealthy for me (in the long run). I'd really like to know if Kava Kava has high oxalates. (drinking the traditionally prepared "tea" version of it, that is) I'm afraid it probably does, but haven't been able to confirm it yet.

Some of those plants listed as low oxalate toxic were the very plants that made me realize that plants were making me sick. I had to eliminate kale and spinach completely. I was eating about 5-7 cups per day in salads but when I cut them out I stopped having horrible cramping and stomach pains. 😬

I don't understand how the solution would be to avoid those foods or only use their extracts. That would not reflect a 'natural' diet at all. Root plants have been in our diet since forever. I'm getting the impression that the research is not developed far enough to be taking drastic action. Almost every time someone tries an elimination diet you hear them coming back a few years later with a new problem. For now I'll be sticking to a nice varied diet with a bit of everything, like a food rectangle instead of pyramid.

You are off on to a good start losing 50 pounds! Watch the videos by Dr. Ken D Berry, Dr. Jason Fung on intermittent fasting and diabetes, Dr. Nadir Ali on the role of cholesterol in the body. What I really like about these doctors is they all followed standard SAD, AHA, and ADA guidelines, got fatter, and experienced the issues that so many do. They started researching and experimenting and saw the difference that Keto and carnivore made in their lives. When a board certified GP (Berry), nephrologist (Fung), and cardiologist (Ali) start putting their patients on this way of eating then make videos or write books, to me that is pretty powerful. They are saying they are willing to risk their livelihood and threat of malpractice to give their patients the power to heal themselves with something as simple as what they eat versus handing them another 2 or 3 prescriptions that do nothing to improve their patients’ health. If you decide to give carnivore a go, watch some of Amber Hearn’s videos. Ivor Cummings and Dave Feldman get into the science behind Keto and Carnivore. Dave is literally his own lab rats and tests and charts day in and day out to show what happens in his body on Keto and Carnivore. Watch the Keto and carnivore conference videos. There are so many more out there I didn’t name. I went from strict Keto to Carnivore in June (now 8/30) and haven’t looked back. I have lost almost 42 pounds in that time, with another 80 to go to meet insurance table weights. My allergies are 99.9% gone, sleep better, more energy, better moods. I think the amount of dairy I was eating along with the swerve and other substitute sweeteners had me stalled out. It is so much simpler planning carnivore meals versus Keto. And my wallet is happier! I usually eat one meal a day because I just don’t get that hungry any more, and my body tells me when I’m getting enough fat versus protein. I don’t get cravings for sugar or junk food. I can even watch shows on the food network without rummaging in the kitchen🤣. And it doesn’t bother me to be eating with friends or family who are eating my old “favorites” or order desert. Just doesn’t sound appetizing anymore. Don’t give up, because you have already made progress. The best thing to do is try Keto for 3 months and see how you do, then transition to Carnivore and try it for a minimum of 6 weeks and compare how you do. Maybe what benefits you the most will be mixing the two styles. It’s your body and your science experiment. Whatever you end up doing, I wish you much success.

Source your meat/eggs, etc organically and humanely. PS: every vegan I know looks like a guant cancer patient...not trying to be rude but they look awful, especially the men that try and maintain it long term. It seems like a way to slowly, over time starve yourself and reek hormonal havoc on your body...

I am a 29yo male. And I've been eating WFPB vegan for 1½ years and never felt or looked better, imo. I'm as athletic as ever and have an abundance of energy when I exercise or work out. I haven't tried a ketogenic diet, but today I discovered Sten Ekberg and Sally Norton and they made me open to the possibility that animal foods aren't necessarily the root cause of the many ills I've read them to be, as long as they're whole foods and you pair it with a low carb intake. I'll have to do a lot more research before giving it a try though, since the thought of the smell of saturated fat seems pretty disgusting to me at the moment. Which may be because of oxalate toxicity, I have no idea frankly - and no health professionals nearby to council about it. I'm neither keen on being in a constant state of ketosis - sounds pretty awful and hard to sustain, on the surface. Either way, I am actually commenting because I see so many comments like yours saying you know a lot of vegans who look awful and unhealthy. I've never seen a WFPB vegan who isn't (near) athletic - and I've also seen carnivore advocates who look very unhealthy to me (particularly permanently loose skin at an early age) - and nobody ever explains what they think of as unhealthy looking, so it seems kinda pointlessly rude to make those comments, even though you claim you aren't trying to be. But frankly, I don't really understand the need for this demonizing. Both WFPB vegans and ketogenic eaters are typically very healthy compared to the average person. They share a common passion for health and preventing diseases. So what I don't get is why so many have such a strong urge to try to put down other healthy people, when I think we should really just be sharing information, and possibly even uniting in inspiring others to see the benefits of eating healthy to those who don't. That's the way I see it anyway.

Could OXALIC ACID be the cause of Diabetes type 2 (oxalates in the liver), fibromyalgia, kidney stones, and gout (uric acid +oxalates). VITAMIN D3 (50ng/ml) + Chromium makes an enzyme called oxalic acid reductase that converts oxalic acid to lactic acid. Metformin causes lactic acidosis as a result of chelating oxalates to oxalic acid (then in turn gets converted to lactic acid by methylation.)They should try at least 4000 IU vitamin and add chromium. Most enzymes and proteins made by vitamin D3 hormone upregulation are at the vitamin D3 blood level @50ng/ml eg. glutamylcysteine ligase. Metformin and citrate chelate oxalates can be determined by test tube studies in calcium oxalate. They should try vitamin D3 (4,000 IU) and chromium. Chromium is expected to be deficient as a porphyria (co-porphyrin-1)develops in the autistic that have high oxalic acid levels and low vitamin D3 status based on the lack of glutathione which removes heavy metals from the body. They should try chromium 200 mcg along with the D3 to remove oxalic acid by converting it to lactic acid. It would make for a very interesting study to gauge the porphyria (co-porphyrin-1) in type 2 diabetics? I have been doing this for people for 9 years now. I am telling them to go to their physician and see if they want to monitor their vitamin D3 level along with getting chromium in their diet. I tell them the first time they take vitamin D3, calcium citrate and chromium to expect leg cramps or diarrhea due to the production of lactic production. Everyone who has followed through this process of taking vitamin D3 up to 50 ng/ml blood level along with getting chromium are no longer diabetic. Some even said thank you for the heads up on the lactic acid buildup and for helping them with their diabetes. I have no lab once I discovered the link between autism and diabetes is oxalic acid and that there is one porphyria in the autistic is elevated. I reasoned that chromium was the atom at the center of the porphyrin ring for an enzyme that converts oxalic acid to lactic acid as oxalic acid levels are increased in autism, fibromyalgia, gout, and kidney stones (these comorbidities are elevated in type 2 diabetes . RAR receptor (vitamin A or (pio)/ (ros)glitazone) is also linked as the vitamin D receptor is associated with vitamin A expression vector. Tumor necrosis factor is also controlled by vitamin D3 levels as a repression @ 50ng/ml. I have been nondiabetic for over nine years now. The paleo diet also works for type 2 diabetes because the liver is rich in chromium (Kale, egg yolks)and vitamin D3.
@medini2
@medini2 2 жыл бұрын
That is very interesting! Do you have any more info? This is Big. But if you get leg cramps from just taking calcium citrate with meals (recommended to bind oxalates so that they will be excreted thru the alimentary canal, ..then would adding chromium and d3 create even more problems, with lactic acid, initially?)

@@medini2 Oxalates I believe cause more problems than just kidney stones. All oxalate diseases are on the rise as our diets become rich in oxalates. Low oxalate diets resolve many chronic diseases and today people are staying indoors rather than going outside to get vitamin D3. So two things we are doing wrong is eating too many oxalates and having a low vitamin D3 status.

How so? There's very little data on the carnivore diet, and it is unprecedented in human history. Humans were never built for food abundance and there's a big difference between thriving for a few decades and maximizing healthy life years. The latter is not something our body is optimized for - like all other living beings we're optimized for avoiding extinction, i.e. thriving until we reproduce and finish nurturing our off-spring. So in a sense, every year after ~50 years of age is just a bonus.

Why does she categorize a normal meal in the range of 150/200 mg of oxalate? Isn't the human body with normal GI/kidney function able to handle more than that? Since most foods with magnesium for example come with high levels of oxalate, it seems we should be naturally equipped to handle higher levels than that (haven't done a strict calculation).

@Sirius White Right, and she mentioned that she thinks supplementing magnesium is the way to go, either as the norm or just in some people. It shouldn't be the norm, or we don't really need magnesium. Did she justified the number that she arrived on oxalate intake? If we have ways to detoxify oxalate in the long run, then maybe surpassing that limit isn't that bad. Since I don't know much about chemistry/biology but isn't oxalate that binds to minerals eaten by bacteria in the gut? meaning it doesn't stuck in the body. It would be also interesting to look at long term vegans and their diet, cause while some might show symptoms of oxalate build up, It seems most or many of them are just fine.

If worried about oxalates in plants, can eat greens with lower oxalates like kale, bok choy, collard, turnip green, mustard green.

@@colonyofcellsiamamachine6175 mainstream doesn't care for health they just sell you stuff. They would try to convince you to drink bleach if they got sponicered enough. P.s kale is one of the worst greens to eat.

@@darkapothecary4116, If you reject mainstream science consensus, you can pretty much prove any pet theory and conspiracy theories via cherry picking including flat earth, no evolution, no global warming, human extinction in less than 5 years, ice age is coming soon, drinking coconut oil will lead to long life, chewing on butter will lead to long life, etc.

@@colonyofcellsiamamachine6175 nope but a lot of hands especially in the nutrition industry are in your wallet. By all means fallow their advise. Personally I feel more than a little better after ditching that crap science that is cherry picked studies lol

NOT TRUE thin and muscular people are sick too!! That is our brainwashing that thin and muscular is healthy and fat is unhealthy. Some fat people are of good health. Sally will say that she had never been overweight or out of shape even though she was sick.

You have to do at least 24 hour week dry fast to clean, rest and rebuild the digestion. Animal products are more toxic. So have days without.
