Great old vise with big anvil and horn. I've never seen replaceable anvil table. Beautiful restoration until you pained the horn.

I think it was a compliment? Thanks! The vice is going into storage for a while (so id rather have as much painted as possible) . I do try and stick to originality as much as possible from the pictures most of them are painted including the 74 was originally fully painted. Unlike the 74, the 75 is flat. Which may suggest it shouldn't be. although its there i wouldnt use the horn. If i am wrong i will change it to unpainted, Could you supply the evidence to show this is the case? Thanks J.

@@AnchorDesigns Definitely a compliment. I have no particular evidence of painted horns but just don't think it's a practical idea as it will get whacked in normal use. I have seen other restorers paint slides then watch the paint peel off when they reassemble the vise. Just a thought. I like that vise!

This vise restore was the real deal. Great job! You need much more patience with WD40. I use liquid wrench myself, and a few hours for it to soak in.

Great work. You can tell you take care to disassemble using plastic drift/soft hammer etc. I cringe when I see people hammering on machined parts with steel!

Thanks for this, the detailed shots of the vintage swivel screws are super useful. I have a end-of-uk production 75 in mint condition minus a couple of tiny details and one of those details is the swivel screws. I have an idea as to how to do something close to original now. Cheers. PS, keep the original jaws, they can usually be stoned/ground down to present well again while maintaining their original properties and aesthetic.

Hi fredio54 thanks for the comment. Absolutely will be keeping the original jaws. I should of explained a little more. This vice will be my soft jar vice for more delicate work hence the aluminium set (in production) I have access to some NOS record vice jaws I’m currently working on buying those as well which should be nice. I got my late fathers Record 75 He was an engineer I’m thinking I would love to have it restored it to its former glory and have it sitting proud Lon the bench.

To remove the pin on mine, I used the threaded tube, taking it up to about 3 inches from the pin, then placed 2, 5mm thick, 3" long steel strips either side of the pin holding them in place with tape. I then advanced the tube, the pushing the end of the strips against the washer and spring leaving the pin clear. using a sawn off 6inch nail and WD40 I tapped the pin one way then turning the screw 180 tapped the other side, gradually getting more and more movement, until I was able to lift the pin out with long nose pliers. unwinding the tube released the spring tension

Note - I have had a comment on the music and it was something i was concerned with. I must admit i am still trying to find that 'balance' with Editing especially on the music front! Going forward would people prefer to A - No Music? B- Have music? C- much more faded? Thanks guys and apologies if was a tad too much! James.

Never noticed the left/right asymmetry in jaws before. Do you know what it's for? (I always prefer vices with through-bolts for the jaws. Easier to remove, even when totally rusted, as you found).

The 74, 75 & 80 (imp) were manufactured red.
