Brilliant Huey. I did a similar job on an old Record Vice very similar to this one that was thrown into a skip when a neighbours house was being renovated. They said I could take it. It's served me very well for a few years now. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw PS I used the same blue as well. LOL.

Thanks Huw, nice one mate, it's always better to reuse/restore an older quality model than struggle on with a cheap newer one! And yes...BLUE is THE best colour!!!😁👍

Hi. I have a record 110 and mine doesn't say STEEL on the side, just says Record, Heavy Duty. Do you think it is steel and just may be a later version?
@HueyLionsheart Жыл бұрын
Hiya Aidy, thanks for checking the video out. Good choice, the 110 is great vice and with very minimal maintenance will likely still be useable long after we've gone! I DON'T have a definitive answer to this question, HOWEVER, from my experience so far it would appear that most vice manufacturers and this includes Record, made vices in both cast steel and cast iron. Steel had the benefit of being hard and ductile so was less likely to fracture when being struck but it was also more difficult (and possibly expensive!) to cast due to it's much higher melting point and larger shrinkage ratio when cooling. Yours may be cast iron, date-wise, I've been told that the stamped in numbers on the bottom of the fixed jaw casting of vice are most likely to be year of manufacture (2 digits e.g: 53 denoting 1953). As I said, this is just my very limited experience. Happy clamping. 👍😁

Hi and thanks for your reply. Interesting. I don't plan on using a sledgehammer on it anyway so I'm sure it will be heavy duty enough, hopefully!😃

Those vices are expensive second hand now. Saw one in a market stall a few weeks ago and he wanted 150euro for it even though it was as old as meself (53).... My little vice is from Lidl and I know one day I'll break it. They don't make things like they used to.
@HueyLionsheart2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Terry, I must admit I was extremely lucky to get this one, this is my 3rd restoration and will have all 3 still in my shop. This was the size I needed initially but as you say it was just way out of my price range. Where are based Terry?😁👍
