Hi Leo, unfortunately the cost of assembling a set of these first six "Caesars" in such a superb quality has now rocketed beyond our middle-class pockets! And of course we still have to see Otho and Vitellius... the Flavians are more afffordable, but Vespasian and Titus are still quite expensive in high grade.
@siisjwj7647 Жыл бұрын
I had to sell my Otho denarius as I couldn’t complete the set of the year of 4 emperors with my budget, and just Otho and Vespasian was not bringing me joy, I bought an owl instead and what a joy it is to handle.
@Numischannel Жыл бұрын
@@siisjwj7647 It's a great time for owls, there's a huge hoard in the market and many nice affordable coins
@siisjwj7647 Жыл бұрын
@@Numischannel Yes I bought an example that a couple years ago only top notch collectors could afford, the 2018 hoard blessed us budget collectors, but people who took owls as an investments just need to wait 5 years or so for the market to digest the hoard because if there is a coin that has the demand in the thousands its the owl.

@@siisjwj7647 I bought my 5th century owl tetra when I was a kid nearly 30 years ago in a CNG auction, it came from the Jay Dawley collection. It has a couple of minor test-marks but an amazing cabinet toning, wonderful style and strike and I kind of love that coin for obvious reasons (it was my first classical Greek tetra).
@siisjwj7647 Жыл бұрын
@@Numischannel How much did the bidding go for back then? Early 2000s market I remember was HOT, I only collected US coins back then and I remember seeing owls for 2000 dollars.

Always love the videos. I’m working through the 12 Caesar’s after completing the 5 Good Emperors. I can’t go all silver because Claudius and Caligula are so expensive. I think an As is acceptable there. Your Claudius and Caligula were very nice to see up close.
@BilgemasterBill Жыл бұрын
Thumb's up for another superb offering. You really flesh out the context and background of these coins and the emperors they depict. Such videos could easily be used to enhance an otherwise dull college-level History course. I look forward to Part 2.

I just started my collection of 12. Started with Caligula. Figured I would get the most painful one done first. Its an As but cost more in bronze than pretty much any other emperor in silver. There goes my coin budget for a few months.

I actually just picked up a major upgrade for my Caesar not too long ago at NYINC. A bit off center, but all of the details are there. Nice portrait, high grade. I’d call it a VF. It’s exactly the coin I went there for. Now to find a Claudius and a Caligula in the same sort of condition.

What’s the approximate cost to build a collection of denarii of the 12 Caesar’s?
@colbystearns50662 күн бұрын
Thousands of dollar/pounds/euros, I’m saving money on my 12 Caesars set by allowing for bronze and provincial pieces alongside silver.
@whitefriarnerd Жыл бұрын
I have 3/6, not bad. I'm leaving JC to last, I'm not incredibly interested in him. Tiberius is the trickier one for me. A nice Caligula as is somewhat attainable, but Tiberius are overpriced tribute pennies or mediocre bronzes.

@ClassicalNumismatics Жыл бұрын
Thats precisely what Ive done, for a Claudius Ive gone with an Alexandria Tetradrachm. The only one from the 12 Caesars Im missing is Caligula, and that will be a tough one.
@siisjwj7647 Жыл бұрын
@@ClassicalNumismatics Yes I guess I will be satisfied with a good provincial bilion tetradrachm, their edges look so rustic, which I love.
@BilgemasterBill Жыл бұрын
Indeed. Claudius' denarii were victims of their own success and quality under an economic principle called _Gresham's Law._ Of course, it works both ways for us contemporary collectors. I believe that one reason we have so many lovely Gordian III silver double-denarii from the mid 3rd Century was that they were specifically hoarded as repositories of intrinsic value in the face of even far lesser and much debased coins of his successors. Every time they dig a new house foundation or lay a sewer line they seem to unearth another hoard. That makes Gordian's issues among the most affordable for collectors like me who don't have such deep pockets, but enjoy having at least _some_ Roman silver.

@@ClassicalNumismatics The reason I had my solidi graded by NGC was to get them authenticated as there are sadly many fakes floating around. That's even more so for Julius Caesar, Augustus, Nero, Caligula, Claudius denarii - all very popular with counterfeiters.

@SoldToddler Жыл бұрын
Depends on what type of follis
@siisjwj7647 Жыл бұрын
