This is a set I'm trying to complete, and seeing these coins has just given me more motivation to get it finished! So far, in order, I've got Augustus, Nero, Vitellius, Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian (as Caesar.)

I have an As of Claudius with brilliant clear legends that I cleaned. I love the font on these early imperial bronzes. They are brilliant.

They are indeed! The flan is rather large, the letters are quite big and tall, differently from 2nd century coins, and the style is generally very elegant and realistic

Although they are a bit more expensive than the normal issues under Vespasian, they are not incredibly rare, so you might very well be able to find one soon :)

Year of 4 emperor civil was my very first set that I stupidly tried to assemble. I also tried to get a Nero denarius. Unfortunately it was just not a realistic plan, surprisingly the first one that I bought was indeed Otho from a MA shop dealer for £525 plus almost $30 dollar in shipping which even though it was a couple years ago I thought was a great deal specially because “IMP OTHO” was clearly visible, I also got a Vespasian and a Nero from a Savoca auction, but that was it, the other 2 emperors were too expensive for me and just Otho and Vespasian were not bringing me joy so I sold the Otho for actually quite a decent profit and bought an Owl instead which I absolutely love.

Perhaps worth mentioning that the Flavian dynasty lent heavily from Augustus' coin designs, presumably as a way to build additional foundation and justification for their rule.

Indeed. The reverse on that denarius of Titus is strongly inspired on a very popular Augustus type, and its not the only type they lend from the early Julio-Claudian period. Very smart move to validate your reign.

I'm still trying to complete the 12 Caesars in silver, however Caligula and Claudius denarii are just so crazy expensive. I have the other 10 though 🙂

Shame how expensive and rare these coins are. Otho in particular is ridiculously expensive. Provincials are your best bet at picking one of these emperors up at a reasonable price.

Essa pergunta e extremamente ampla. "Preco medio" em que estado de conservacao? Moeda imperial ou provincial? Que denominacao? Eu recomendo dar uma olhada em paginas como wildwinds, MA Shops e VCoins, ver os tipos que mais te interessa e so assim vc poderia ter uma ideia razoavel do preco. Tambem vale olhar Numisbids, na secao de leiloes terminados, e ver como estao os precos das moedas que te interessam.

Hi Leo, I think it is in one of the Discourses of Epictetus (preserved by Arrian) that we find the story of a man who, in the early 2nd century AD, preferred a denarius of Trajan instead of one of Nero, which had greater value, because Nero was morally rejectable and Trajan was a good emperor. I remeber this because it is the only source I know giving us notice of people discriminating the value of denarii by emperor...

I have come across this passage as well when reading the University of Chicago's Classical Philology Journal. The sources I read talk about a Sestertius. The idea of someone refusing, on a moral basis, a coin without intrinsic value such as the sestertius sounds much more plausible to me than refusing a Denarius. The exageration ancient writers often rely on when trying to pass a message also makes me believe this event must have been a fabrication on Arrian or Epictetus's part.

@@ClassicalNumismatics Yes, you may be right, they often made up such things. As for the denomination, I have just checked the text and yes, it is a bronze coin, the text uses the word tetrassaron (4-asses piece), which could be translated as sestertius. But well, there are quite a lot of such references to money in the Discourses, and they usually refer to silver coin, that's why I remembered it as denarius. I remembered it incorrectly.
