I wish i know more about ancient Philippines... What have the Europeans done to our history is unforgivable. I mean we have the right to know the truth of our country.

+Maou If the Europeans didn't arrived, we would've become a confederation of different ethnicity and there wouldn't be a "united" country. For example, the Visayan people would have formed there own state, the Bicolanos, Ilocanos, Tagalogs and the Muslim south. Yes they did horrible things specially the Spanish but they created a unified Philippines of what we have today.

Since you left a comment i will reply. Happiness of living and witnessing existence itself; these are the some of things that have been robbed from our early natives. Why?. Europeans influenced us that money is everything that "wants" is more important than "needs"; money now enslaves people. They raped the sacred land, exploited the great holy trees, and brainwashed the pure children of the land; now look at how polluted the earth is. Since ancient times, many of our ancestors are animists/(paganism you call it), they love nature, they respect and honor the sacred earth, they can see things that our level of perceptions can't. They are happy with small things. Unlike after the colonization, all I see is destruction, destruction not to worship the sacred earth, destruction of the sacred belief , and destruction of holy earth. They did horrible things, and will end horrible,. Almost all people think that what they have done is for the good, but if you look at it on a deeper level; we are those people - and it is only good for us. We live in comfortable lives, worshiping material things, climbing the ladder of social status, not taking the spiritual path seriously, collecting clothes that we don't need, things that we don't need. Yes it is pleasurable, but I and those who are awake -, in a world that is asleep, just can't be happy and comfortable about it. What about those people who tried their best to protect the earth? Because of this globalization, we have vandalized everything, we have left a lot of marks that can't be erased, we leave trash behind. Also according to what you have said, It is not about uniting a ethnic groups into a "Philippines" and inserting other belief. Life is about people having a union with the great mystery. Our great ancestors have protected the sacred earth long ago. But many people ignored them, because of that, we had led these madmen(colonizers) to take over. I am , as well as the others who are awake, are tired of this lie that people continues to live in. Forgive me if i may not see things as you may see or normal people do. These was not how i was raised; I was raised to follow everything; to fit in. So forgive me if i don't live by the norms anymore. --anyway, it's not personal this was just a reply since you commented.

+Ayps 14 From the history you can tell that all the tribes Unite to kick the Asses of the Spaniards. I don't think Spain really wants to unite it, they want to spread Christianity at the same time Steal the golds & resources of the islands. Look how rich they are & we are still the same since 1521.

The spanish destroyed the Filipino identity- is it really the spaniards or it was something else? It was difficult to have a national identity as a Filipino even at the onset. Like what the video says, there were Kingdoms existing already prior to the spaniards colonization. There were Kingdoms, there was no 'unified filipino identity' at that point in time. We call ourselves 'filipino' after the spaniards removed the Kingdoms and renamed the kingdoms into one country-as what we all know 'Philippines' named after King Philip of Spain. But let me correct myself, the island of Mindanao, where the majority of Datus of Muslim kingdom were not all conquered-some still fought and still fighting for thier autonomy and independence ( they have been fighting for that not just against the spaniards but even to the 'now ' Philippine government). There are so many factors why 'Filipinos' have difficulty in embracing our own identity. It can be due to the fact that we were really a confluence of past kingdoms who had its share of glory and pride and somehow it is difficult to even unite those kingdoms into one nation (Kingdom of Tondo, Datus of Mindanao, Prince of India from Visayas). It might be due to our geographic features (islands separated by bodies of water), and maybe due to our 100+ dialects. What even made the matter worst for us to lose tract of what and who we were- we lack documents, historical manuscripts, relics with written histories. We have but we still lack. I believe that we passed history frm one generation to another through an oral intricate story telling-but i guess, at one point in time, the then 'conquered' Filipinos were either hindered to do so or were already influenced-psychologically and intellectually- that 'what we were and who we were ' was considered shameful and barbaric as thlught by the spanish colonizers. Have you seen a nation that is so lost in its identity as the Filipinos? Have you seen a nation that is so resilient as the Filipinos-that when you teach him, leave him somewhere, he can easily adapt to that new environment? Have you seen a nation that is so rich in culture, in skills, in natural resources-but have lost its love for its own? Have you seen a nation that tries to move forward but have failed to look and embrace its past? Have you known a nation, that has lost its identity as the Filipinos? #PhilippineHistory #LovingOurOwn ##PhilippineIdentity

Why wasn’t there a mention of the much older (around 5000-2500 BC) kingdom of “Layag na Kaboloan” (Ilocano, meaning “Banner/Flag/Sail of the World)? Or the majestic race of peoples who co-existed with each other in that kingdom? Luyag na Kaboloan, also known as the Whangdom of Pangasinan, traded with India, Arabia, China and Japan as early as the 8th century A.D. in recorded history. It was a sovereign pre-colonial Philippine polity located in the fertile Agno River basin and delta, with Binalatongan as the capital. It was referred to in Chinese records as Feng-jia-shi-lan, (Féngjiāshīlán; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Pâng-ka-si-lân). The polity of Fengjiashilan sent emissaries to China from 1406-1411, and was a tributary state to the Ming Dynasty up until 1576 - yet again, when Spain outlawed boat-building and closed the Philippines to foreign trade. [Source: History of Ming Dynasty (Part I): 二十四史 明史 By Li Shi: excerpts from “The Twenty-Four Histories” (Chinese: 二十四史), the official Chinese historical books covering the period from 3000 BC to the Ming dynasty in the 17th century.] Layag na Kaboloan was first founded by Austronesian peoples who collectively called themselves Anakbanua around 2500 BC. This kingdom existed long before the 13th century Srivijaya and Majapahit empires arose in Indonesia who extended their influence to much of the Malay Archipelago. It’s even way much earlier than the emergence of Sultanates or the Bangsa Moro kingdoms in the south, which were only established with the arrival of Muslims in the region by the late 14th to the early 15th centuries. The ancient kingdom of Luyag na Kaboloan was in Chinese and Indian records as being an important kingdom on ancient trade routes because of its proximity to Southern China. Kaboloan was their first port of call, as well as the first land they see as they sailed south to all the other kingdoms in Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao or Southeast Asia. Agoo was their main port since its coastline was shaped in such a way that it was a very ideal harbor for foreign vessels coming into Lingayen Gulf. Agoo encompassed a vast land area that spanned the modern day towns of Rosario, Santo Tomas, Tubao, Pugo, Aringay, Caba, Bauang, San Fernando City, and the place called "Atuley" or present day San Juan. Agoo's role as a port deteriorated when the Spanish yet again, outlawed boat-building and closed the Philippines to foreign trade. The region was first inhabited by the aboriginal Negritos before they were pushed by successive waves of these Austronesian immigrants from Taiwan and Guangzhou, Fujian, and Yunnan Provinces in China who penetrated the narrow coast: Tingguian and Ibaloi in the interior, Ilocano in the north, Pangasinan in the south, Zambal/Bolinao in the southwest, and Bago (part Ilocano, part Igorot) of Benguet and the Cordilleras foothills. They all settled the whole region: different tribes, but brothers of the same race, who also happen to be closely related to the Tagbanua of Palawan. These are the people who identified or associated banua (Motherland) with the sun, which was their symbol for their banua. (Hence, the sun as the center of the 3 stars for the 3 major island groups on the Philippine flag - which eerily looks like it morphed from the ancient Phoenician flag. I urge you to search and compare.) The legendary princess warrior Urduja/Udaya, who Ibn Battuta called a rival of the Mongol Empire, is believed to have ruled in Kaboloan during his time - although in Battuta's account of his travels, he referred to the kingdom as Tawalisi. The Anakbanua were expert navigators and the vast maritime trade network that once flourished in ancient Caboloan connected this distant settlement of Pangasinan and Ilocos with other peoples of Southeast Asia, India, China, Japan and the rest of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The Anakbanua were part of this ancient Austronesian civilization. Over time, the Anakbanua expanded their territory and influence to incorporate much of northwestern Luzon with what are now the neighboring provinces of Tarlac, La Union, Zambales, Nueva Ecija, Cagayan and Benguet. (I urge you to look up the 67 Bolinao Skulls. And the Cabalwan Flake Tools of Cagayan.) Not only were they expert navigators, but also fierce fighters. They used the mountains to their advantage, so they were one of the last bastions/ stronghold to fall to Spain. This society flourished and the people enjoyed full independence until the Spanish conquest. The Anakbanua have witnessed the rise and fall of Empires and dynasties in their neighboring countries, and thousands of their generations have come and gone, but they will be remembered by the footprint they left behind: The Banaue (Banua) Rice Terraces of the Cordilleras. Agbiag dakami nga Anakbanua! Agbiag dakami nga Ilocano! Agbiag dakami nga Pangasinan! Ken dagiti kakabsat mi nga Igorot! (Long live the indigenous peoples of the north!)

I found this very interesting, as precolonial history of the Philippines is hard to find. I have asked around a lot over the years and have found that most Filipino don't care about it or are ashamed by it. One Filipino told me it's hard to be proud of head hunters. If anyone knows of more places to learn, please post it. Thanks

Luzon in Phillipine actual name is Losong. Losong is a name of a village with the origin dated back to 1580 when a princess from Luzon landed at a beach in Terengganu, Malaysia running from the conquering invader the spaniard. It was a sad story that the other neighbouring states in phillipine at that time could not help Losong. Your culture is same as in Indonesia and Malaysia - Bangsa Melayu. That is the reason you have Balai malayu or Balai malay.

Correction: The Spanish and Portuguese didn't _completely_ destroy native culture. Usually the culture was used to spread Christianity, especially myths, language, and writing. What _was_ destroyed were native ritual texts and anything that the Iberians thought would deter from Christianity. In the Philippines, while Spanish culture flourished, native culture was sorta integrated, and was definitely still part of the lives of natives to some extent, at least up til around the mid 1700s to early 1800s.

A white complexion was seen as noble and aristocratic, especially in Southeast Asia, where the sun was always out. Only those rich enough could afford to stay indoors, while peasants baked in the rice fields. edition.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asiapcf/east/05/13/asia.whitening/

According to many historians, Ma - I was a Country located to the north of Borneo, probably in Mindoro Area ; in some historical Chinese Imperial annals :"Chu Fan Chih and Sung Shih" we can find out informations related to the symbols adopted in that Country... . William Henry Scott on his book : "Prehispanic Source Materials" report some interesting notes based on those accounts: on page 68 : " There are metal images (lit. Buddhas) of unknown origin..." "... Since the local chieftains make a habit of using white umbrellas, the merchants must present them as a gift." This habit was also common in another place called : " Sun-Hsu " , on page 69 of the mentioned Scott's book there is another interesting note: " ..., the real boss of the traders is sure to appear on the spot and settle matters, after which they offer him silk umbrellas, porcelain and rattan baskets as a gift. ..." The adoption of white umbrellas or "parasols" was a clear sign of the buddhist influence: The Parasol (Umbrella) is called "chattra" in Sanskrit ;above the mountain is the dome of the sky. This is symbolized by the umbrella, whose important function is to cast a shadow, the shadow of protection. The parasol or umbrella is a traditional Indian symbol of both protection and royalty. The ability to protect oneself against inclement weather has always, in all cultures, been a status symbol. . In Oriental thought, the fact that it protected the bearer from the scorching heat of the sun was transferred into the religious sphere as a “protection against the heat of defilements.” Thus the coolness of its shade symbolizes protection from the heat of suffering, desire, and other spiritually harmful forces. The dome of the umbrella is held aloft by a vertical handle (just like the mountain upholds the sky), which is identified with the ‘axis mundi,’ or the central axis upholding the world. The umbrella is carried above an important dignitary or the image of a deity, to indicate that the person or symbol below the umbrella is in fact the center of the universe, and also its spiritual support. Umbrellas seem to be especially important in processional rites, being like mobile temples. As it is held above the head it naturally symbolizes honor and respect. BUTUAN Butuan was a small country by the sea to the east of Champa (now Vietnam). We find out some infos related to the symbols of Butuan in the Chinese Imperial Chronicles: In 1004, according to the chinese Imperial accounts (see W. H. Scott's book :" Prehispanic sources..." ), the court handed down an edict prohibiting their export of chinese goods, gold and silver by direct market purchases, especially ceremonial flags and regimental banners to which they had taken a predilection. ("people from distant lands don't understand rules and regulations ", a minister complained). For four consecutive years, from 1003 to 1007 , Kiling (Ch'i-ling), the Ruler of Butuan sent missions to China. In 1007, Kiling sent I-hsu-han with a formal memorial requesting equal status in court protocol with the Champa envoy. This was denied on the grounds that "Butuan was beneath Champa." This country has been a tributary state since the 4th century. In 1011, a new Butuan ruler named Sari Bata Shaja sent Likan-hsieh to the Chinese Imperial court with tributes that included non- Butuan products like "White Dragon" camphor, cloves from Moluccas and a slave. The poor slave was freed by the Emperor who was shocked by such offering. Nevertheless, Likan-hsieh was given honors and a memorial was granted which exalted Butuan and had flags, pennons and armor "to honor a distant land." It was only in 1373 that the first tribute mission from Luzon was mentioned in the Chinese chronicles. That's the proof that both: Chinese and Butuan made a great use of flags and regimental banners; the shapes of those flags probably followed the style of Chinese flags of that time, quite different from those known to us of the last two or three centuries ago.

Language itself show Arabic influence and India origins which has no relevance because it is believed the Language evolved over 6-8 thousand years so naturally the Philippines being a trading center. Many other languages were used and introduced by trade For example the term Romance language means most European languages which descended from Celtic and obvious Roman roots aka Latin. One has to assume a tremendous trading center, industrious hard working people, many bays and natural ports. So a mingling of languages from other cultures like the Mixed heritage of Filipinos. Language background is complex and still evolving. historically Cebuano, or its ancestor language, has been spoken since the Proto-Austronesian era (c. 6000 years ago) in the Sugbu (Cebu) heartland.Cebuano was first documented by Antonio Pigafetta, an Italian explorer who was part of Ferdinand Magellan's 1521 expedition. Spanish missionaries started to write in the language during the early 18th century, and as a result, Cebuano contains many words of Spanish origin.Cebuano is a member of the Borneo-Philippine languages. Early trade contact resulted in a large number of older loan words from other languages in Cebuano, like Sanskrit (e.g. sangka, "fight" and bahandi, "wealth", from Sanskrit sanka and bhānda respectively), and Arabic (e.g. salámat, "thanks"; hukom or hukm, "judge") or Judgement. It has also been influenced by thousands of words from Spanish, such as kurus [cruz] (cross), swerte [suerte] ("luck"), gwapa [guapa], ("beautiful"), merkado [mercado] ("market") and brilyante [brillante] ("brilliant"). It has several hundred loan words from English as well, which are altered to conform to the limited phonemic inventory of Cebuano: brislit (bracelet), hayskul (high school), syápin (shopping) and dráyber (driver ) Various other comparisons can be made but the key to all of this is the Filipino had their own language and it evolved, Like English in America is different than Australia or England.

The study of Philippine history has for many years been Eurocentric, most Philippine historians have gone as far back at the earliest Spanish records but have failed to look into the archives of neighboring countries, such as Brunei, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and China. Their dependence on the English language limits the majority of Philippine historians from accessing volumes of materials written in Chinese and other Asian languages. As a result, the history of the Luzon Empire remains mythical in their scholastic psyche and still virtually non-existent in mainstream Philippine History. Just to make it clear, that Rajah Sulayman was mistaken from another ruler named Rajah Soleiman. That guy being reference in this video was called "Bambalito" by the Spanish soldiers, it means Crazy Boy. He was the leader of Macabibi (now Macabebe) and Bulacan soldiers. The misconception of the name Sulayman was made by a Filipino writer and Revolutionist- Pedro Paterno. That guy was never named by any of the existing documents other than Bambalito and Tarik Soliman by Paterno, who collected datas from Kapampangan Scholars which were documented names of Kapampangan heroes during Colonial era. He assumed that's the name of the hero of Bankusay. Modern Kapampangan Scholars were outraged and demanded for the revision of the history of Battle of Bankusay. They made a book based on this Rajah entitled "The Nameless Hero", which will be released this year. here is some credible source: www.filipiknow.net/bambalito-the-first-warrior-hero-who-died-fighting-for-our-freedom/

Kingdom of Tondo doesn't rule all people of Luzon. The Luzon was just name to one of the ethnic tribe in Luzon the Lucoes. Most of the ethnic group has chieftain like in Northern Luzon. Although, there was kingdoms from being Animist to Hindu-Buddhist and some Muslim sultanate or Datu. Others retain the original culture most are Animist and they were not kingdom. They are tribal group and just merge due to intermarriage.

We lost our identity. We became a nation because a bigger nation, who conquered us, told us so. We had diversity, wealth, prestige, glory and the respect of neighbours. We now have a leader who wants to bring it back piece by piece but as history suggest, he can never do it. Because, before the spanish came, we were never united. Even after the birth of a 'nation', the so called 'leaders' fought amongst themselves for the honor of being recognized by the ruling colonizers and even today, our government cannot move on forward to success because of our 'fractured unity'. Ingrained in our DNA is the proud and resisting genes of ancient kingdoms to not accept the rule of the other simply by democracy. Basically, we filipinos were not united in one banner. We only became 'united' when the Spanish, Americans and Japanese conquered and controlled us. We don't have an identity of our own and the identity we have is the identity dictated by our conquerors.

I am the descendant of ruler of ancient kingdom of leyte where the spanish completely destroyed. It was the first island called las islas filipinas or hacienda filipinas called philippines(property of philip). It was destroyed due to warring island with sugbo(cebu) it was requested by rajah of cebu to destroy the kingdom of leyte by blood compact or traditional ceremony to make a political ally. My ancestors were the first victims of spaniards colonization ransack all the gold of people and pay taxes people became miserable for hundred of years.

The Spaniards did not occupy the Philippines in 1521. Ferdinand Magellan was killed that year and king Phillip of Spain did not send Miiguel de Legaspi until 44 years later, which was the year 1565, after the Spaniards occupy mexico.

we should dig in our pre colonial history. sad that our history was deliberately destroyed by the spaniards.the effect of their colonizations is felt until today leaving many filipinos landless cause large tracts of titled lands, the haciendas, are owned by few elite people. buti na lang di sila umabot sa cordillera region where land is more or less equally distributed to families. check kung sino ang nagmamay ari ng mga malalaking lupain dito sa pilipinas. mga spanish title pa.

wow i cant remember having this lesson way back in elementary, high school and even in college. what i do remembered being taught was that our country has three main occupants before the Spaniards occupation in 15 century and these were the negritos or aetas , Indonesians and Malaysian. there were few pre-Spanish characters I remembered being mentioned in the history books used those time, in the 80s and 90s era. Characters such as rajah Solayman,Humabon, Lapu-Lapu and so forth.... were mentioned but not really in detailed like where they came from, how they build their kingdom, what was the Philippines like before the Spanish era. these information were missing, because as far as I can remember it looked like in my opinion our history started during the Spanish occupation and not before. Please do more research and share some more, because I am sure there are others like myself who find this interesting. and hopefully your work will someday be noticed by someone who is an expert in this field.. so keep up!

I will find my light somewhere else, not of my own countrymen and women who didnt fight back against the spanish.

+jini08taeki The only luck Miguel Lopez conquered Manila was because he had also a native troops who was christianized backing him up. Divide and conquer and brainwashing was his tactics, if it were just the Spaniards without the natives, the Spaniards will be dead and the same fate as Magellan. Philippines will still be a muslim and animist country.

I can only wonder, and if anyone is asking about my nationality. I do not know, family wont tell me nothing. All i can do is dig deeper into my country's history and find clues to bring back the culture and make it heard across the country, but like visayamindanaoluzon say, its too late. Filipinos will harbour that name until this planet is destroyed. I feel sorry for my tribes people in my country having to suffer losing their identity as many of them want to work for mainstream nowadays. Filipino is a name that miguel lopez gave the island and the people. its all in that bastards hands, had the natives were not brainwashed to believe christianity is the way of life, we would be outstanding and have our own culture and people would be proud and know who our people are, instead of lying backstabbing filipinos who think their better than their own ancestors who brought up the land and gave their souls to the devils who i call the spaniards.

They replied that they did not worship in any other way than by raising their joined hands to the sky and calling on their god Abba. For which thing the Captain was overjoyed. And seeing this the first king raised his joined hands to the sky’. “These words spake Yahweh-shu’a and lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, ‘Abba’ the hour is come, glorify thy Son, that thy Son, also may glorify thee, The Manila Times Strong Philippines-Israel Friendship February 28, 2014 11:46 pm by Rick Ramos Last Wednesday, 26 February 2014, I attended the Friendship Day Celebration between the state of Israel and the Philippines at the Rockwell Tent in Makati. It was the commemoration of the 56th year of the Treaty of Friendship between our two countries. Not many people know that there are the bonds that tie the special relationship between our country and that of Israel. In fact, there have been Jews in the Philippines prior to the arrival of the Spaniards in our shores in the mid-1500s. This is not surprising because Jews have been in diaspora for over a thousand years, reaching Iran and India. According the book The Christianization of the Philippines published by the University of San Agustin in Manila in 1965, the Jews had already been in our country even before the Spanish times. Don Pacheco Maldonado reported to the King of Spain in 1570: “The greater part of the inhabitants of Luzon are Muslims and Jews.”

New Pre-Hispanic History of Philippines Luzano Pancho Canlas book “PHILIPPINES 2 MILLENNIUM HISTORY” : Page 43 , When the Spanish ruled the Philippines, they purposely destroyed books and other documents on History of the Pilipinos so that they can easily Christianize the people and make them forget their belief. The old books that were not destroyed by the Spaniards were the Tarsillas of the Muslim, the Book of Datu Sumakwel (which was the History of Panay) and that of Datu Kalantiaw.

When the Normans invaded England in A.D.1066 they brought with them the French Language. Since neither the Anglo-Saxons nor the Normans would surrender their language to the other, the two become wedded and eventually evolved into Modern English, excerpt from ‘How Yeshu’a Become Jesus’).
