I'm so proud :3. The spear I completely hand made with traditional tools was prominently used in this video. Even helping in these very small ways towards the production of these videos makes historical re-enactment the most fulfilling thing I've done in my life.

I imagine you may already have thought about it but if your team would be open to the idea, I wonder if it'd be feasible to approach a few of the larger edu channels covering Rome & its neighbours, & see if one or more of them might be open to a collaboration of some sort...? Esp. if there's a topic you'd like to cover but would prefer multiple perspectives on. You guys have SUCH quality of content to offer in such a partnership! KZbin's recommendations just don't do a good job of flagging similar channels to viewers, so I suspect people are mostly finding you by stumbling in by accident..? 😭 I certainly did - just this week, despite being a big historytube watcher, & was so excited, but also frustrated not to have got here earlier! 😏 Nearly all the really awesome smaller channels I've found in historical costuming etc have come to me via collabs or recommendations from larger channels, so I know it really works to just let people know you are out here!! 😅 Always some risks in collab, of course, but could still be worth a try?

15:02 Had such a good giggle at the "young men seeking honour" swaggering their way through the frame here! 😆 (Although not getting QUITE as much swagger on as those darn chickens - they are fearless... 🤣) Another really awesome episode, thank you team! So cool to see some in-depth analysis of sociocultural development in the Germanic area - it feels like all too many creators gloss over this pre-Roman space, perhaps still falling for the "it's just all barbarians" propaganda...? Really look forward to anything else you do focusing on your neighbourhood's history & culture in this era, feels like a great area of opportunity definitely not over-covered elsewhere! Intriguing to see the way armed conflict drove early social + political patterns in this time, and then look ahead into how that pattern seemed to repeat so often in so many later time periods, right up into the 1800s & 1900s? (Of course, part of that seems to have involved leaders intentionally harking back to earlier times, whether imagined or real, in order to fuel their political & territorial ambitions... so I guess we should not be too surprised! 🤦🏻♀️)

Glad you enjoyed Anna, we did too, especially in that one scene hahah. These topics are quite hard to research though, as there's not many sources on such non-roman peoples. In large part it comes down to speculation, which doesn't help with 'selling' the video to the audience, which is a serious concern when making this type of content anyway unfortunately - as you can see by the very low number of views on this video. And it's the views that bring in the sponsors, and its the sponsors that bring in the money, and its the money that allows us to do produce more content. But now and then we will definitely try to make a step outside the comfort zone and try something new, when the topic presents itself. Thanks!

Very good material, as always. If I may venture a suggestion, when you have a long on-screen narration, instead of standing motionless and stare into the camera, try interacting with your environment - and it'll feel much less stiff if you allow yourself to be natural about where you look, you don't have to keep eye-contact on the camera all the time. Walk around, look up at the trees, play around with a stick and use it to illustrate an attack, throw stones in a river to illustrate impacts, etc. Use your environment to add to what you're explaining, be creative! 🙂
@ImperiumRomanumYT2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you're right. Really moving around is difficult though, as often times we use a teleprompter to do the texts - but when we don't, we move around, usually these are the intro and outro of a video. Next to that we're still struggling to relax while a camera is pointed at us, and presenting a tight script doesn't make things easier to relax and improvise. Presenting is an art in itself we found it. We really want to focus on this for the next batch of videos though, so bear with us for a bit longer :P

Was there any differences between Celtic and Germanic arms and armor since this channel shows mostly Celtic equipment
@JCobelens4 ай бұрын
The mainly Celic La-Tene culture had a strong influence on the early Germanic tribes, La-Tene sword where used by Germanic peoples, these swords were found in the Low Countries, Norhern Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Poland etc, also spear shapes were influenced by Celtic designs, shields were also influenced by Celtic styles but the circulair spiked or conical iron shieldboss is more of a Germanic inovation. Germanic warriors also used single edged swords which were also a native development.
@TheChangelingBrony4 ай бұрын
@@JCobelens so as far as we know everything is Celtic aside from the Cherusker sword and a shield boss?
@JCobelens4 ай бұрын
@@TheChangelingBrony I know that Sword maker Albion has a Single edged sword based on examples from Germania but there is no direct connection with the Cheruscii tribe regarding this sword type (they probably also used it) Germanic Single edged swords were more popular in the lands around the western baltic sea, Like Jutland, South Sweden, North Eastern Germany and North Western Poland, In Central Germany and Poland (closer to the La-Tene world) Celtic La-Tene style swords were more popular. They seemed also to be more popular in the Netherlands and NW Germany and the Rhineland but these areas have mostly votive weapon deposits, Burials with weapons were much rarer in these areas. There is only one Germanic SE sword known from dutch archeology know so far I know. Another interesting thing (well for me it is ;-) there are several cases of La-Tene swords that were retrofitted with Germanic SE style hilts. The thing is that the La-Tene culture was a big influence on weapon design, even the Romans were influenced.
@TheChangelingBrony4 ай бұрын
@@JCobelens so these peoples have nothing unique about themselves military equipment wise as far as we know
@JCobelens4 ай бұрын
@@TheChangelingBrony There were some differences but at the end their equipment was rather similar compared to their Celtic and Roman neighbors. So no large two handed double bitted axes or giant clubs . War axes were used (were not common) but they were one-handed with a small axe head. There also also a few findings and depictions of war clubs but early Germanic warriors were normally armed with spear(s). a shield. The more wealthy would have a sword (double edged La-Tene style or Single edged Germanic style sword later Roman style swords would become more popular. Armor (mail, helmets etch) would be only used by leaders and some elite warriors. Germanic warrriors used 3 type of spears, Fighting spears with a large bayonet spearhead or a large leaf shaped one. Multifunction spearheads for throwing and figthing. These are the Framea that Tacitus mentions in Germania and spears (javelins for throwing) the spearheads of these were sometimes barbed. Shields used by the early germanics used to be oblong of oval, hexagonal or retangular shape or intermediate shape with a protruding iron shieldboss. Poorer warriors probably would have shields with wooden bosses similar like the ones found at Hjortspring. These oblong shields were good for more individual fighting style. Later in the Roman iron age large round shields started to replace the oblong Celtic style like shields. These were better fitted for shieldwall style fighting. Migration period Germanic warriors have a more distinct equipment, like Angons javelins, Throwing axes, Saxes etc.
