Since ancient times humans have used magic to curse and protect, to harm and heal, to divine and constrain. Join us to explore the mystical objects and potent rituals of our magical past in this free Hallowe’en event. Expert talks from academics and an author will be followed by the opportunity to participate in a range of hands-on activities exploring ancient magic - from making your own curse tablets and poppets to divining the future and turning humans into beasts.
Speakers:
Prof. Helen King (Open University) - ‘Green stones, red wool: colour and touch in ancient Greek magic and medicine’
Dr. Gabriel Bodard (Institute of Classical Studies) & Dr. Celia Sánchez Natalías (University of Zaragoza) - ‘Be careful! Magical figurines and written curses’
Dr. Celia Sánchez Natalías
Dr. Sophie Page (UCL) - ‘Magic and the Medieval universe’
Poet and author Roz Kaveney will read from her novel Resurrections (Rhapsody of Blood Vol. III)

Yes!!! The most emotionally charged thoughts are the ones that will manifest. That explains why most of our modern society is designed to keep us dead inside while our media tell us what to be angry about, so they use our emotional power to achieve what THEY want. We need to realize this and not only take our power back but become responsible for it and what we manifest with it...

@@admin8784 that's interesting, as I am not sure that they are the same. I have now looked into the UK folklore in much more detail. To suggest that they are the same is to suggest that western traditions greatly influenced Kejawen. Many people do exactly this claiming the link through the Theosophy of Dutch Colonists and certainly Kebatinan movements in places like Jakarta and Semarang may have been influenced by the Dutch. But within the Kejawen I am exposed to I find this somewhat fanciful and believe the Majapahit influence to be so important.

Red is so potent to us becoz we only require 11% saturation of the colour red for us to see it compared to 30% for blue and 59% green... this is also why green is so relaxing on the eyes... So when you look at red medication, it is obviously almost overloading the brain with visual stimulation data which comes with a spike in emotional reaction, and that spike leaves a potent impact which will be repeated everytime we see that colour again and again. When we seek medication it is often coz we are feeling unwell and WANT something potent to cure our malady and becoz the colour red comes with a potent emotional reaction, we will perceive red medication to house that potency we are seeking and this explains why red medication will come with more placebo effect.

musicguy20 My wife and I visited his resting place, in Stratford on Avon,over twenty years ago. Curiously curses were mentioned in relation to his place of burial,which is actually under the sanctuary area of the Church of England that he was part of,although he was Anglo catholic. I guess it must have been because of the culture grave robbing,and disruption of parish grave yards in the seventeenth Century,ie the 1600’s.But it is very incongruous to a consecrated parish, there being a series of curses around his grave,underneath the communion table.For the very reason that the entire building would have been Consecrated by the Bishop at the time of opening the church for active worship,aswell as the time of laying the foundation stone! The only other example of a famous persons grave located in a church under the main worship area,is Dunfermline Abbey,and that’s the grave of King Robert the Bruce! Maybe it was believed by his friends that this was best and safest,place for his final burial. I mention him being Anglo catholic, as his writings (although some are attributed to Francis Bacon),refer to Ghosts,and pergatory.If you contrast this with Milton in the 1500’s,he never mentions purgatory,because of his clearly Puritan convictions!

They are both as potent as each other, what counts here is the emotional power behind the desire which drives a "spell" thtu... But fear is restricting and limited while love is not, therefore love has more creative potential and range than fear, while unfortunately, if you have not learned how to let love truly flow, fear is more ingrained in our psyche and is therefore often easier to use :( and it takes a very trained person to use love to achieve, coz this culture is not very conducive to love...

Isn’t magic just the religious ritual of the other?
@blaeckingceorl4161
@blaeckingceorl4161 3 жыл бұрын
I think I understand your point, but I don't think it's exactly like this. Magic implies the idea of manipulating the nature (both realms, material and spiritual) directly. You're are the agent who works. Religion is more related to worship deities and ask favors to them. I think it's more like that. For the christian view such thing is not permitted or it just doesn't exist. The only way you could do such things would be by the help of evil spirits, demons. So the other gods are illusion or demons fooling us to make us fall into sin against the one god and lost our souls.
@lo3572
@lo3572 3 жыл бұрын
@@blaeckingceorl4161 Magic is about making spiritual forces affect nature. If you read the Picatrix grimoire of medieval magic; it’s full of supplications to & talismans for the planets & the astrological timings & rules for when to do them, for maximal effect. Seems to me it’s simply the pre-Christian religion & its prayers. The planets still have the gods names. In Christianity there is a calendar & novenas & prayers to saints that also aim for favor from spiritual forces.

I don't get it! Thru out all my elementary and high school days whenever we watch some movie in class the teachers ALWAYS had the common sense TO ASK SOMEONE TO "PLEASE GET THE LIGHTS"...nowadays these absentminded "intellectuals" just ramble on WITH THE LIGHTS DIRECTLY "ON THE SCREEN!"...i guess they think t it's the cool way of making a presentation...having the audience STRAIN to see just what the heck is on the screen! I kept fast forwarding to see when they'd get a clue...I gave up and went straight to the comments. Even pot smoking teachers in the 70s had enough common sense to know we see a screen MUCH BETTER with the house lights low...go to your local theatre and start the movie with the lights directly on the screen...good luck!!! Like Bill Biden says..."Come on man!" If I missed some technicalities about the lights, then I would apologize for my rant.

Her job here, is not to dive into the core and heart of Magic..but moreso to cast her spells of illusion on the listeners... creating a bland blanket of stale energy around magic. In a sense, she is discussing magic very mildly... almost creating a haze of boredom and tastelessness around the subject. This subject has the power to liberate and empower many, many people especially when presented by a "liable" source. She speaks mainly of "objects" and external things as opposed to the massive amount of magical potential within each person.. she for the lack of a better term is a sellout. There are many people who report that magic is real and actually has much to do with what physicists have discovered about the universe being linked to every body. That what we do here and now, can in fact affect something light years away. Like the observance of an entangled particle here on earth would effect its partner any where else in the universe instantaneously. By limiting your understanding of this universe to what your professor tells you , is in a way selling out. There are many who have made amazing discoveries about how are minds effect the surrounding environment simply because they didn’t stop at what the books taught them. This sound like a regurgitation of something she read in a book.

@thevulpinecollective
@thevulpinecollective 2 жыл бұрын
the first recorded use of the singular "they" dates back nearly 700 years, and it's so prevalent in the english language that people literally use it without thinking in their daily interactions. for example: "who called?" "I don't know. maybe **they** left a message" or "someone was talking to me about you earlier" "oh really? what did **they** say?" on top of the singular form of they being grammatically correct and in use for several centuries, its also quicker to say than "he or she" everytime you need to refer to someone of unknown gender, plus it costs $0 to be a decent human being and respect people's pronouns.
