They didn't. A Grim is English/Nordic mythology. Whatever animal/person was buried in a graveyard first was cursed to stay in the graveyard forever, protecting the graveyard and its inhabitants. Seeing as nobody actually *wanted* to be trapped in a graveyard, they buried a wolf/dog first, so that the dog's soul would be trapped there forever

The new season is definitely different, but I don't think it's necessarily bad. I loved the old vibe the show gave, but I also love the sort of Harry Potter vibe this one gives, they even basically have houses 😂😂😂 And the character development is as amazing as ever, and that's one of the main reasons I got into this show!

To be fair, he did guard a church. More specifically a grave on the church grounds (his "sisters" grave). He only orotects Chise now because she formed a familiar contract with him so he wouldnt be trapped at the church for his entire immortal life.

Got your lore wrong. It was believed that the first body buried in a graveyard became bound to it as its protector for all eternity and so to prevent any friends or family members from being chained to the duty. A dog was layed to rest first. No it didn’t have to nor ever was a requirement that the dog be living. Just that the dog had to be the first one buried there.

Honestly one of my favourite anime. The first season and all the movies so far heavily leand over to mithology, while ading small bits of psychology and bits about cycle of nature and self preservation. While the new season so far heavily leaning towards psychology, social structure, standards, morals and development. It's a big shift of focus honestly, but I still love it.
