"He thought that Carthage would, in a straight 1 on 1 fight with Rome, naturally have an advantage". Real Carthage thought that too.

Ancient Med is a good way to see why the 7 players in normal diplomacy works so well. A lot of this map is dependent on which two next-door neighbours manage to cooperate with the farthest player joining them

Agreed. If the ordinary seven player game is like chess or poker, this is a slightly less sophisticated game. Perhaps more akin to checkers or blackjack.

I enjoyed your commentary almost as much as playing in the game. I don’t agree with everything you say here, but that’s a natural part of this kind of AAR where you mostly consider your own strategy and tactics and have only your own perspective of the diplomacy behind the scenes. That said, it was a solid board top and you deserve the glory. If we had not set a time limit, I think we could have stopped the solo by pulling forces together to prevent you reaching 18 centres. Well, maybe. Unlike you, I had a very poor relationship with Carthage during this game. Anyway, good job FloridaMan! Cheers from Big Gun of Egypt.

Thank you. I think you're right about the probable way the game would have gone if it had continued. I was pressing my attack most forcefully against Carthage in the end, and that would have caused him to either jump into your arms or lose all of his centers to the two of us. From there, the Egyptian alliance probably would have contained me. Maybe I (or we) should make a Johnnie Walker Green Label video, to give the audience another perspective on what I look like on an Ancient Med map.

Played this map as Greece recently. It really is hard to survive as them or Egypt.

Yeah, I think that's what the stats show, too. That's a marker of a less-than-well-designed map (it has a significantly higher disparity in outcomes than the Classic map).

the initial year should be 250bc not 400bc. During this period, the empires would be closest to the borders of this map (except that instead of Persia there would be the Seleucids). In 400 BC Rome was still a city state in the shadow of the Etruscans and Macedonia had not yet expanded either.

I appreciate the historical point! I'm no expert on Classical Antiquity, so I wouldn't know about when the best time would be in terms of this map seeming credible. I imagine there was never a time when all of these nations were seriously a threat to each other, but very interesting if they were.

Carthage, the france, just had to not piss off its brittain in rome. It failed to do that. And it became useless.
