Great insights as usual Stefan, thanks. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the pros and cons of people partnering with someone else for freelancing. Maybe informally, if the trust is there. I can think of advantages, such as bouncing ideas and problems off each other and pooling efforts on a premium job, but think it might leave scope for a degree of independence most of the time. I suppose also, fear of one's possible weaknesses (for example, how do I find the next contracts?) are lessened when two of you are involved. Were you confident of finding contracts when you started out on your own?

I started freelancing / working as an independent contractor about 2 years ago and I 100% agree with everything. At the moment I'm just questioning wether I prefer to just work 9-5 since it's not so draining. But the pay as a freelancer/contractor is probably double what i would get in an actual full time job 😂 although the benefits of a job are tempting I'm not sure I would give up the freedom of freelancing

Hi Stef. I've got 15 years experience on commission as a financial advisor. With the lockdown in 2020 started on your coding course. Mostly off then on in the beginning so that I could quit my job and become a digital nomad. You're talking to me now, because I quit my job a year ago, and the online WordPress stores I built while learning to code have carried me thus far financially. I would really appreciate help with setting up some structure. Just got comfortable with Laravel. What is your advice for me to have your level of freedom. Thank you... SAAS ideas loading :)

10 years being self employed and this year has been tough... Thinking hard about maybe working for the man especially now that both myself and my business partner have kids we can't manage the hours we used to pull without huge burnout. But then, who wants to be working 24/7 anyway. We had some really good years but yeah the web dev environment here at the moment is shifting. Great video Stefan, enjoyed your insight.

hope you won't mind this hypothetical question - how well do you think you'd fare in the current environment if you didn't have kids?
@speedhaak
@speedhaak Жыл бұрын
@@georgemartyn5268 Hey George, honestly (and this is just my opinion) if you have the free time and the lack of responsabilities then the world is your oyster as far as coding is concerned. It also depends on your personality, I tend to get extremely into things that I find interesting - so when I first started out and discovered technologies like CSS, Bootstrap, WordPress, Javascript, jQuery, HTML, Php ect I would spend days buried in it. These days though, I can't do that as much. I spent the last three nights this week working until 10:30pm but really, that's not healthy even if you are interested in the problem you're trying to solve. Trying to keep up with the industry is a young man's game in my opinion. Everything moves so fast, its nuts. This past month or two have been very good to our company though and we have completed some big projects. We had to swallow our pride and employ a 'work smart not hard' enthos though that ultimatley means custom design/development isn't realistic for us so we focus wholesale on WordPress now with Elementor, not even ACF coding which means I don't actually code much now, just build things out in a lego fashion. This to me is a little disheartening but it is what it is, making money is the priority now not beavering away at code like I used to :( That's just life though and I wouldn't change a thing, my kids are everthing and brighten up my day, every day. Hope your journey is going well :)

How about partnering, 'co-lab', with another developer? It could help with structuring, especially if they have more experience, and also can be a complementary skill, so you don't have to know everything.

Indeed, how do you structure your time as a freelancer?
@donklee3514
@donklee3514 Жыл бұрын
The reason why freelance programmers make more money is complicated and interesting. Most employers hold a wage hard line on existing employees insisting on pay cuts to inflation and heavy work loads. Eventually, the employee developers get sick of the abuse and leave the employer holding the hard line in a larch. The ability to hold a hard line is based on the employer's using freelance programmers as leverage against existing employee developer. When the employee calls the employers bluff, the employer are screwed. They screwed themselves. Or should i say the replacement's learning curve is going to screw them. The freelancer has leverage which translates into more money, but at a direct cost to the previous developer in negotiating power. It is a vicious cycle. If the temp worker/freelancer works out for the employer, then they never learn.

I started freelance work in 1998. It was freedom and flexible. It has many many many bad moments. Few good moments. It was hell finding clients. It’s still is. I have no retirement money 💰. Just social security. It’s very unsteady though I am a non tech marketing guy. I love freedom and so I stayed. I tried to get out and it was hell getting back in. Once you. Have stepped out. You stepped out. Insurance was non existent till obamacare. Nothing. I mean zip. Getting insurance was very very very hard. It’s not great. I don’t recommend it for most.

I don't understand the working per hour thing, if you have a bug that takes 3 hours to discover? would you add that to the cost? The longest logical error in my career took me 6 hours to discover and fix.
@davidowens9597
@davidowens9597 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on how you want to do it, but I found that I like setting a flat amount for the software project with the client and sticking to that. If you run into a bug that takes 3 hours to fix, then you have to eat the time. If you finish the project 3 hours early, great. It evens out over time. I think Stefan has a video on How to Price a Project.
