Now you gotta talk about the Thespians next. They could have left but chose to stay behind with the Spartans and fell along with them. They may not have been as well trained as the Spartans but I'd argue they have just as much courage as any Spartan.

I think Athenians wrote the story and they NEVER lost occasion to cast the Thebans under a bad light. Weren't the Athenian who pushed the Thebed to take arms against Alexander, only to advocate for the destruction of the beotian city thereafter?

Maybe they're trying to play both sides so they can get a decent win-win scenario whoever won? It's costly, but it could be the safer option compared to allying with other Greeks and get destroyed or allying with Persia and getting ganged up as the big bad? Idk, politic is confusing to me
