i plan on going to uni in the uk, and while i know london definitely has its downsides (esp the crime thing since i currently live in one of the safest cities in the world lol 💀) but i can’t imagine living in a small town, and especially not one with bad public transport. because a) as a student i’m not going to have a car obviously and b) i’ve lived in a place with excellent public transport for the past few years (and before that i was too young to go anywhere on my own so it didn’t matter) and changing from that sounds terrible. so while i am looking at other places, i’m still focusing on london because of the fact that it’s a big city with good public transport
@rtmhannahАй бұрын
@@gayatriunni549 definitely look into some northern cities if you haven't already, places like Manchester, Liverpool etc. I think they're easier on international students sometimes by virtue of being a bit friendlier generally than London is, and they can definitely still have that 'big city' feel, with good transport links and the like (no other metro systems but a couple of cities have trams and a lot have really comprehensive buses and overground trains). Some of them also are ranked much higher in terms of student experience than any London unis, bc London as a city really doesn't cater to you as a student at all, although some people prefer that. Try to get a good picture of your options! London, despite its size, isn't the only big city in the UK lol
@gayatriunni549Ай бұрын
@@rtmhannah haha of course london isn’t the only big city in the uk, but i’ve only ever lived in huge metropolises, and many of my relatives who live in the UK say that even though many of the other cities technically have decent populations, everywhere other than the city centre still usually feels like a small-ish town in comparison. but that’s okay, and although i know i said that big city + good public transport is a factor, my main ones are still obviously things like the academic reputation, research opportunities, rankings etc etc, and it just happens that many of the top ones are in london lol. but university of manchester is one that i’m going to apply to for sure

Americans and Aussies complain about “narrow roads” in the U.K., but Europeans don’t. That’s because our cities are ancient. Remember, London has been inhabited since the Bronze Age - 3300BC-1300BC (and possibly even earlier), with Londinium established by the Romans in around 47AD… the city has expanded and developed over the last 2000 years with most of it not having cars but having horse & carriage - hence smaller roads.

If you add more lanes to make driving better, more people will drive, which will make driving worse. In a city like London with a functionally infinite well of potential demand, you can't outbuild traffic. “There is healthy competition” at multiple point the British supermarket industry has been a monopoly primarily held by Tesco. Food isn’t cheap due to competition it’s cheap due to the fact supermarkets want to max profit and they do that they short the farmers as much as possible to sell it as cheaply as possible to get you shop there instead of elsewhere. If you want to spend a lot on food go to Waitrose or M&S food, the food will be priced more to ensure farmers get a fair cut (at Waitrose as they’re also a cooperative it’s also to keep wages high for the staff due to being part of John Lewis) and not get ripped like they do from Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Aldi, Lidl or Sainsbury’s.
