Out of all the levels I ever made in SMW or SMBX, SWITCH IS BLUE took me the longest time to make by far (~200 hours). I'd say 90% of that time was spent coming up with good enough puzzles - programming all of the custom stuff was actually the easy part. And I have to say: working on this level has given me deep respect for (and fear of) galaxy-brained puzzle designers who can come up with stuff like this on the regular. No idea how someone like Hempuli was able to pump out hundreds of puzzles for his game. There's an Easter egg if you enter any of the rooms as Iris. You might want to check that out real quick next time. Also, some of the puzzles weren't solved in the intended way (the last two rooms of yesterday's video, and the last room of today's video). I'll post about those on the Talkhaus later. But I don't mind that there ended up being multiple ways to solve them. It's cool to see people come up with their own creative solutions. In hindsight, I may have made the execution of some of the puzzles too hard, but that's amateur level design for you.

I beat this level myself and i kind of wish it was explained that you could take items back into the reset pipes to clone them, that's the only thing that wasn't made very clear and i was stuck in a puzzle for a long time because i assumed you couldn't do that and it would just reset the puzzle. Raocow struggled with this as well. Otherwise the level was very well made, good job.

I’m going to take a wild limb in the dark here and guess that if you go in as Iris, you can’t do anything because -Iris is green- this isn’t Iris Is Blue

5:17 short answer: no, it isn't. long answer: the closest approximation to that property in the game's logic would be "Text Eat Block", but that would destroy the blocks even while the text is in motion also, turning demo into a catnip would've required a restart because there would be no more demo to control

Definitely overcomplicating things - in that last room, you could have easily gotten Catnip over by breaking the ice blocks around the shell tunnel.

23:02 what??! You can mount him from behind the fence?? Is that vanilla behavior and I just forgot? I ended up cheesing it because I couldn’t figure out how to get catnip to the right side (I tried making him run through the tunnel underneath)

well in vanilla the fences are exclusive to castles and yoshi can't enter castles, so there's not exactly any reason for yoshi to consider mario's fence layer for interactions

@@hi-i-am-atan sure, but you also dont see boos or pokeys or plenty of other tileset conflicting sprites in castles, and they still disable collision. anyway, i checked and indeed this is a weird quirk with yoshi i forgot about

@@nathanisbored yeah but boos and pokeys have the exact same interactions with mario as the enemies in the fence castle, i.e. being a box that hurts him if they're overlapping yoshi, meanwhile, is a weird thing that only interacts with mario if he touches part of his hitbox while moving downward, and if that happens it forcibly changes mario's state into mario and yoshi, an effect only shared by other yoshi i can't say i have near enough of an understanding of smw's code to speak on how well sprite collisions are handled, but to be frank, a system modular enough to let yoshi have his special behavior by overriding specific callbacks while otherwise using the exact same collisions as any other sprite feels _way_ overengineered for a snes launch title. so really, it's more of a testament to how versatile the general enemy collision is that most sprites just work with the fences, since that indicates they're all running the same mario interaction code hell, can't you pick up powerups regardless of your fence state, too? they're certainly not using the same mario interactions as enemies or projectiles, so it'd track that they also wouldn't consider fence state since iirc there's not really an opportunity to get a powerup into a position where it'd matter

@@hi-i-am-atanyou cannot pick up powerups behind a fence. As I recall, mounting/dismounting yoshi does leverage some general sprite code, because for example it increments the stomp counter, which is why if you mount/dismount repeatedly without touching the ground and then bop an enemy, you can start getting 1-ups. Yoshi was a late addition and it shows in the code, because a lot of his systems are kind of shoehorned in. He still partially leverages the general sprite routines though

🟢SWITCH IS BLUE[ _eight_ | RC10 ]: _Help!_ (14:22) How did you manage to have yoshi on the top right part of the level?? I'm completely stuck about how to do it! (23:03) You can ride yoshi regardless of the net position!?!? *WHAT!?* Every other sprite need to be on the same net layer to be interacted (except extended sprites I think). No I don't think breaking the "catnip - is - red" is the intended way, but I don't see anything else to do, but what those demo only blocks mean?? Oh there's a third puzzle... I'll skip to the end of the video, I still want to try it eventually.

Breaking the "catnip is red" is actually intended! It's easier and more consistent to do while riding catnip.
