The French (QC) sounds too close to home. There’s a strange horror effect to making something uncannily familiar to characters who should not be aware of anything about us, and in-fact seem alien to them. A particular Xenoblade title does this too, but not gonna detail which, just gonna lead those to think the obvious one (when it’s not unless you actually played it). Spoilers for Xenoblade series in thread.

2nd SPOILER warning for those misclicks (I understand) Not Xenoblade X, y’know, the one with the more explicit apocalypse. Xenoblade 2, right? Morytha, normal-looking above surface, under the sea however, was an attempted recreation of a formed world, there’s even US Interstate Highway signs, with numbers that all exist IRL, although the particular highways IRL never line up by a long stretch, one of the numbers correlate for one that’s in the north passing through parts of Canada, of course here we number those roads differently, although that one stretches close to Nintendo’s NA HQ, but another number correlates with another latitudinal highway in the south. So it causes a Simpsons Springfield effect. Point is when you’re playing shonen anime romance *high fantasy* adventure RPG and encounter the remnants of human civilization, yeah it’s weird. It tosses things that should break all worldbuilding conventions only to make it stronger. The perfect reverse isekai, except the chance to go to the real world has long passed, one could say the whole world got killed by… Big Rigs Mouthful. Had to end this on that.

(quickly became my favorite series but i digress.) i remember when i set foot in morytha, music was already creepy and sad as is, but what sent chills down my spine wasnt the guldos or the ruins, *it was the fact you could read the signs of buildings.* i knew that morytha was what remained of human civilazation, but being able to read the signs was bone chilling. like people lived here, had lives, and assuming that the war hadnt completly ravaged what would become morytha well, some of these people were living there lives normal before a certain someone wanted to play god. Heck, im kinda realizing kirbys quest kinda mirrors rex by a very long strech! both go on thier quest, find mankind's ruins, and technically climb a large tower, being lab discovera for kirby and rhadamantus for rex both meet the equivalent of a god. with all these connections, maybe kirby"s gonna find his equivalent to a monado! never gonna happen, but hey a man can dream right?

@@dragonpixel1809 I think with Kirby here in particular, the first vocals you here is the song “Brand New World” on the radio near the beginning, but is in a language that doesn’t exist, not too dissimilar to NieR: Automata’s vocals. The purpose there by being unfamiliar I think is to differentiate this place from our own familiar world, which works as that scene was meant to be a happy adventurous moment. But the *high* fantasy breaks once we hear a vocalized language we should comprehend, depending on the listener and assuming they speak one of the provided languages. I gave French (QC) as an example as I’m numb to English as a Canadian English speaker playing games with plenty of voice acting, including over a speaker filter, but I’ve been to Montréal, QC plenty before, and anywhere with a speaker such as the Metro transit or exhibit building (which Lab Discovera would be) will feature that alongside English, making a sound down to the Québécois accent I can only associate with my familiar experience. The most alien thing in a magical high fantasy world where anything can happen is to introduce the starkingly familiar elements.

Also to clear up “plot holes” to anyone, Shiver Star/Earth is likely a parallel Earth within the “Dream Land Realm”, while I’d describe New World/Earth is in the “Forgotten Land Realm”. Both faced separate major catastrophes, but I think that’s why there’s two Ancient Sects, they never split, they were just of two worlds, same planet.

Also Dream and Forgotten can be part of the mind, there can be other planes of existence in Kirby like “Id Land”/“Instinct Land” and “Ego Land”/“Thought Land”.

They all feel kinda creepy to me but for different reasons. Neither the corporate enthusiasm of most of them, the disturbing excitement of the Spanish (Spain) one or the formal, soulless voice of the French (France) one feel right in the context, and that makes them creepy
