Finding little bits like the newspaper is one of the reasons I love buying used books! I like to imagine the previous owner loved it a lot, which in turn makes me even more excited to read it 😊

Affectations at the beginning of books can also be quite moving. "From your affectionate friend L.L.B." for example but dated 1856... almost ineffable... if I can put it like that.

Gaskell's North and South is a real classic. She was left wing as you know, and will see in the book. She'd have hated Thatcher. Not sure, if there is a decent biography now. I must do some research. It is nice to find a book from the 50s when things were crafted and not made to fall apart. I liked the book and the video.

I did read _Mary Barton_ funnily enough and didn't really pick up on much wing, if that makes sense. Perhaps a re-read is in order, after _North & South._ And I did see the period drama of North & South back in the day with Richard Armitage and Ms Hale, played by Daniela Denby-Ashe. How did she get that name... ! Lol. The ending as the trains crossed and so forth! Whh
