I loved the finale and this series more so than the first. I particularly loved the scene where Mr Grey puts Captain Sutherland in his place.

The scene with Mariana is her incurring a cross thinking of M as she writes in her diaries. She usually does it with Ann on her mind except when they are fighting then she fantasize of M and she writes just as a mistress not because she misses her. So just uses her image and memories for titillating reasons

Also for those who don't know, Incurring a cross is Anne Lister code for giving it a wank.

I love their story. Your right this is how you do it. Brilliant acting, cast, writing, costume design, cinematography, it's all there, hands down. Suranne, and Sophie, my God, the stars truly aligned when they were cast as Anne, and Ann.👏 The scene in the church with the young girl's tomb was heartbreaking 💔. For me it showed all the feelings Anne internalized trying to find her place in the world, and I do think she wonders what it would have been like if it had been possible for her and Ann to raise a child of their own. Anne's intellect, her elan for life, and curiosity were at odds with the rest of her Lister family (except Aunt). She was the only one that was excited to hear of Anne's adventures. I love it all. Bravo!👒🎨🎩📖✍❤

tbh i was ready for a cliffhanger, i was ready to cry over a S3 that might not come, so this finale was everything, perfection; it was amazing and i loved every second of it. suranne and sophie are just such great actors!

Strange, I didn't read the scene in the child tomb as emotional but rather as manipulative, a way for Anne to appeal to Ann's sensibilities after their argument. This season, I often found myself unconfortable with the Ann(e)s relationship because it can indeed easily be seen as predatory. It's not even subtext when the voice over says things like "She is queer and little-minded and I fear for her intellect. I see I must make the best of it for the moment and then perhaps I shall be at large again". In s01 it was endearing because big bad Anne was acting and thinking tough, yet we could clearly see her developing genuine feelings. This season, there were less instances of her admiring or being pleasantly surprised by Ann, and way more of her bulldozing over her wife's wishes. And as an audience, I didn't like we were made complicit with all the direct stares during or after their arguments. I'd have been way more into it if we had seen a period of marital bliss to be more assured of their feelings before all the drama. Just me?

Even though I think this is the best series ever produced on a lesbian relationship, and the chemistry between Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle is beyond compare as is their acting, the writing was often confusing. As you quoted above and on AL's asides to the camera, what were we to think? So many scenes could be interpreted in a negative way vis-a-vis AL's feelings toward AW. Uncomfortable and confusing.

I agree! That ability to weave dynamic ideologies, relationships and stories together was beautiful! They were also mindful of addressing the typical trope in TV that ‘lesbians will always be at conflict and never be happy together’ and instead showed how conflicts and circumstances arise in relationships of all kinds but that they can be mended with a little bit of wit, communication, love and empathy! Great review! Keep up the excellent content!

Hmmm...Flawless? This season featured AL cheating on AW, AL spending large sums of AW's money, AL ignoring AW as she daydreams about Mariana as she reads yet another letter from her, AL getting off on Mariana in a fantasy sex sequence, AL marginalizing AW in a letter to her friends and then trying to gaslight AW about it, AL ignoring AW in the carriage and not realizing it, AL refusing to introduce AW to her London friends because she's embarrassed about her, AL doing numerous asides filled with scorn to the camera regarding AW, AL observing AW with a disapproving grimace as AW does the speech at the groundbreaking for the Casino which AW is partially paying for, and just generally throughout S2 Eps. 7 & 8 being condescending and bitchy to AW, not counting the cheating scenes mid-way through the series. All of this behavior justified by and compensated for by that sweet little kiss at the end. I wish it was that easy in my own relationships! 🙂

The ALBW site on KZbin had an interview with Sally Wainwright on 9 July 2022 asking what comes next for GJ. There will be a targeted campaign set out there in the next few days for fans to engage with, if they want to, to contact other streamers who might consider funding another series with the BBC, if there is enough interest. The Look Out Team are actively looking for another backer too, after HBO has cancelled their interest. Please spread the word.

I'm going to have to disagree about the writing, the whole season, not just this episode. Sally's het lens really shown through and retread mistakes she's made long before Gentleman Jack - she needs an editor to cover her blind spots. The diaries are definitely the superior experience, this season. I'm not expecting no conflict only sunshine, roses and bed times, but Sally chose to ignore what was been the height of marital bliss and amorous Ann(e)s, according to the diaries and go in this direction without giving us that substantial newlywed glow, before diving off cliffs. Complete insult, especially after Last Tango in Halifax, to ignore the peaks and primarily focus on the valleys. Do I want the meet and all the things leading up to the marriage, yes, but what has been a huge gap in media, especially lesbian media, is navigating actual marital bliss. It makes for more of a roller coaster to have those additional highs and get that real taste of them. In het media "happy" may be the epitome of boredom, but we've 99% tragic misery here in sapphic land, we're absolutely thirsting for the warm, fuzzy and steamy. Sally left out all sorts of things that paint a different light regarding Ann(e)s, Anne Lister more balanced, Marianna, etc.

i do agree, they really went from like, the 3 episodes of pain followed by a brief happy ending in season 1, to a couple of episodes of somewhat happiness followed by 5 of pain in season 2.. it really reads as like... as soon as the marriage started it was already failing

I think Sally wants to be able to write their whole story up until Anne's death so she's sped stuff up for that reason. I would've liked more honeymoon period too but enjoyed the season. I think it'd be cool to explore Ann more.

Can i say something else, i don't know if this was 100% diary accurate, in which case... well, o k a y.. but jesus christ anne lister is the literal worst this season, she doesn't have a single redeeming quality. Like i don't know, maybe try to not make her look like a complete asshole, considering she's the protagonist? A prime example when she went "oh well, i guess i shall just be at large again" after ann walker talked about wanting to leave her, withouth A SINGLE hint of sadness.... she was literally crying for her and saying how incredibly fond she had became of the woman last season, and now she just doesn't care about losing her, her damn wife??? like it doesn't make sense, we went from sweet and considerate, trying to hide how much she actually cares without being able to, season 1 anne lister (with a hint of manipulation, that much is true), to interdimensional fuck boy, gives zero fucks about her wife, level 100 liar and manipulator, season 2 anne lister.. wtf

This week HBO announced it would not be picking up the Anne Lister (played by Suranne Jones) series for a third outing. However, the BBC offered a glimmer of hope, saying they were "in talks" with writer Sally Wainwright about the TV show's future. Sally also has plenty of ideas for a new season.

Children being the "glue" is not a healthy relationship. The details didn't read true to the diary, nor exactly the period. I know there are some lines here and there in the diary, but the angles are different, including Anne's insecurities about losing Ann, because she is not a man. I'm not saying there wasn't pressures about heirs, but the language, tone, revisit wasn't in tune with the period and more particularly lesbians and balance of the years covered.

I feel this way and I think it's probably a credit to Lydia (the actress) that I do despise her because that's how she appears to be trying to play her. You're supposed to root for Ann and Anne. I think it needs to stay fairly true to the original diaries though & from what I have read there's no more cheating after this.
