Question Mark and the Mysterians were formed by a group of Mexican teenagers who were born in Texas and raised in Saginaw, Michigan. The original group members were lead singer Rudy Martinez, his brother Robert on drums, Frank Rodriguez on keyboards, Bobby Balderrama on guitar and Larry Borjas on bass. This song was originally released in 1966.

I didn't look at this version, and when it was released, as it obviously is newer. I'm sure there are some older original versions probably in black and white out there from that era. It's still a groovy tune I've always liked. The keyboard sorta sounds like the same one (not the riffs, just the tone) used by The Bob Seger System for the original version he did for Ramblin Gamblin Man. I bet they knew each other as bands.

This is actually a re-recording the band made in the 90s because they were unable to re-release the original recordings. But it's pretty much a note-for note remake with less of the garage band edge and grit.

While this is the original singer Question Mark (Rudy Martinez), it's not the original recording. This song was originally a hit in 1966. that would have been the black and white video you saw. You're watching the remake from 1997. The vocals, while very similar, are better in the original. The ending is different too as the original fades out.

My late fiancè was the keyboard player for a few months with ? sometime in the 80s. He told me it was a great experience. He was a wonderful sax player with aspirations of playing professionally but it didn't happen for him. This was the closest he got to some low level of notoriety and he ate up every second of it. He said he would try to explain to the fans that he wasn't the original keyboardist but they didn't care, they wanted his autograph so he obliged. It brought him a lot of joy when he was sick before he passed in 2010 and I'm so glad he had that experience.

I had a chance to chat with them for a bit. Nice guys. They sound good live :). Even though this tune was written and became popular in the 60s, it's still fresh :). I was born in 1962, the year they formed group. I remember hearing it on the radio growing up, a lot 😆. It was around 2008 I think when my wife and I took a ride to Bay City one Friday night in the fall and they just happened to be there. It was a really nice evening. I think a couple of the guys have passed since then. Makes me sad. Breathe in all the good moments in life. You never know who you may have the pleasure of meeting :)

Exactly, it's all about the keyboard. We played the dashboard in the car too. This is from the mid 60s so it had nothing to so with MJ or some say Prince. I remember this playing from the transistor radio I had on the beach in Atlantic City, so it reminds me of being on a hot beach with the waves pounding in and making sand castles. Same with Dave Brubeck and a few other groups on the radio at the time. Pink Panther theme was big too. The song Tequila too.

This was the first group I saw in concert. I was a sophomore in high school and they played at the county fairgrounds; the same place where I saw Janis Joplin 2+ years later.

Really enjoy Jamel keeping me in songs from my teenage years, and keeping GREAT music alive!!! Yeah it’s a little different from the original on 45’s that we played on our record players but just as good as what we heard on the car AM radio while out parking in the country. Good times and good memories.

Lyrically I always thought he was heartbroken and planned on flipping the script and break her heart but instead he realizes he will just cry and not follow through.. Also the original recording is soooo much better

Now that he has reacted to both, I find this comment hard to justify.

The song always made me laugh. The beat and his singing is great. The words are the reasoning of a 4th grader who felt snubbed by someone he imagined was his girlfriend, who may have lent him a pencil or smiled at him. Gotta love it. I did back in the day. Even knowing how silly it was then. Didn't matter. The more I thought about the words making no sense at all, the more I'd laugh. Never mattered.Too many teardrops for one heart to be cryin (so cool)....night and day..cry cry cry 96 tears, all to a nice groove and pre-adolescent inner voice of pain. I still love that band. Come on let me hear you cry now....ha ha night and day...Wooo. I can imagine some innocent bewildered child thinking, Boys are stupid and they stink, as he sings that.

I was a sophmore in high school when this came out late in 1966. Very popular went Number 1 in both U.S. and Canada. That organ chord set was magic. I don't remember the names in the band, but I remember that song. Time spent steaming up the windows of the folks '65' Studebaker. Also learned how "no protection" was not smart, a close call and in the long run a best outcome, made me more careful, and hat 'Free Love' was not true in the least little bit.

Very mid 60’s psychedelic pop. As a young kid, this new music was “edgy”, now it’s fun and good for nostalgia!! The singer is doing his best to channel Eric Burdon or Mick Jagger.

One of the most underrated classic bands ever. The song is actually from '66 but this video is for a re-recorded version some decades later, I believe. Can't Get Enough Of You Baby is another classic of theirs and pretty much the reason Smash Mouth ended up sounding the way they did.

Even though this wasn't the original version I still enjoyed it. I was seven years old when this song was originally released and I have been listening to it ever since. I have it on several mix CD's that I have made.
