Question Mark and the Mysterians were formed by a group of Mexican teenagers who were born in Texas and raised in Saginaw, Michigan. The original group members were lead singer Rudy Martinez, his brother Robert on drums, Frank Rodriguez on keyboards, Bobby Balderrama on guitar and Larry Borjas on bass. This song was originally released in 1966.

I was trying to figure out how old I was when this was released and thanks to your information I now know I was seven years old at that time and I have been listening to this song ever since.
@matthewdropco3 жыл бұрын
I didn't look at this version, and when it was released, as it obviously is newer. I'm sure there are some older original versions probably in black and white out there from that era. It's still a groovy tune I've always liked. The keyboard sorta sounds like the same one (not the riffs, just the tone) used by The Bob Seger System for the original version he did for Ramblin Gamblin Man. I bet they knew each other as bands.

While this is the original singer Question Mark (Rudy Martinez), it's not the original recording. This song was originally a hit in 1966. that would have been the black and white video you saw. You're watching the remake from 1997. The vocals, while very similar, are better in the original. The ending is different too as the original fades out.

My late fiancè was the keyboard player for a few months with ? sometime in the 80s. He told me it was a great experience. He was a wonderful sax player with aspirations of playing professionally but it didn't happen for him. This was the closest he got to some low level of notoriety and he ate up every second of it. He said he would try to explain to the fans that he wasn't the original keyboardist but they didn't care, they wanted his autograph so he obliged. It brought him a lot of joy when he was sick before he passed in 2010 and I'm so glad he had that experience.

The words are the reasoning of a 4th grader who felt snubbed by someone he imagined was his girlfriend, who may have lent him a pencil or smiled at him. Gotta love it. I did back in the day. Even knowing how silly it was then. Didn't matter. The more I thought about the words making no sense at all, the more I'd laugh. Never mattered.Too many teardrops for one heart to be cryin (so cool)....night and day..cry cry cry 96 tears, all to a nice groove and pre-adolescent inner voice of pain. I still love that band. One of the most underrated classic bands ever. The song is actually from '66 but this video is for a re-recorded version some decades later, I believe. Can't Get Enough Of You Baby is another classic of theirs and pretty much the reason Smash Mouth ended up sounding the way they did.

Even though this wasn't the original version I still enjoyed it. I was seven years old when this song was originally released and I have been listening to it ever since. I have it on several mix CD's that I have made.

Back in the late 1970s or early 1980s a local Detroit radio station made a parody version called 96 Beers. It was actually pretty good! ~Be Blessed
