This song was written by "?," the band's frontman who wanted to be anonymous (he's listed on the composer credits as (Rudy Martinez). At one point he referred to the individual band members only by three-letter names (at one point, the band was known as XYZ). The mystery helped market the group, who wore dark glasses to add to the intrigue. Since mystery has always been a staple of their act, it's hard to know which stories about the group are factual. When they recorded this song, they were a five-piece whose families migrated from Mexico and Texas to work in the Saginaw Valley in Michigan. ? told Songfacts the song was always called "96 Tears," and never "69 Tears" or "Too Many Teardrops" as sometimes reported. He insists that the number 96 has a deep, philosophical meaning, but refuses to tell us what that is. Interviewing him is quite an adventure. Note that the singer is not the one crying the 96 Tears. He's been dumped, and plans to get revenge by reuniting so he can dump her back. That's when she'll be crying the 96 tears. When the group came up with this song, ? didn't want to use a title with a number in it because he thought they would be accused of ripping off The Rolling Stones, who had a hit with "19th Nervous Breakdown." His bandmates convinced him to go with it. The record was taped in a converted living room in Bay City, Michigan. The band then had the Texas-based Pa-Go-Go Records press 500 copies so they could distribute them to the DJ's in southern Michigan. The song became the most requested record on WTAC Flint, and CKLW out of Windsor, Canada, which went into Detroit. Cameo Records, having solvency problems, picked up the record after one of its staffers heard it on CKLW. (Songfacts.com)

This band was one of the early proto punk, garage rock bands. Latino, Mexican band from Michigan. Their other hit was "Can't Get Enough You Baby"! Which was also covered by Smash Mouth back in the late '90s. Look at that song too. This kind of music is to not think too hard on the lyrics its music made for dancing.

Contrary to what the band members say, this is clearly the greatest double entendre song of the era of recorded sound (1890 to present). Originally titled "69 Tears", the lyrics only make sense when viewed as describing the 69 sex position, with tears not being tears of the eyes, but from somewhere else (trying not to be too explicit here). I've pointed this out to a number of people, and when they reread the lyrics agree with me that the lyrics ONLY make sense when viewed as describing the 69 position. It is amazing this song was even played on the radio, it hid the double entendre that well. Thus, I rank this song as the top hidden double entrende songs of all time. It is a great garage proto-punk song as well!

If you pay attention to the lyrics, contrary to the band's name there's no mystery to the song's meaning: "You're way on top now, Since you left me" -- so she broke up with him. Then the song explains that he plans to reunite with her just long enough to get his revenge: "But watch out now I'm gonna get there We'll be together For just a little while And then I'm gonna put you Way down here"

The song 96 Tears the rights were owned by Allen Klein the Beatles Lawyer and Rep. But the Original Group and singer Rudy are still performing concerts. Rudy is still going strong dancing across the stage.. he was born in 1943 or 45 making him about 75 to 78 yrs. Not bad that he dances for the complete concert.. not much info is out there on the band..several other singers covered 96 Tears including Aretha Franklin , Thelma Houston , and more.

Before there was the internet, there was broadcast television, and they had dance shows. Ever hear of Soul Train? Anyway, you could learn dances by watching one of these shows, and if you had a local TV station, you could even go to the show and perhaps be once of the dancers. If you all ever do any movie reactions, you should watch the original 1988 movie Hairspray. I think you’d get a kick out of it.

In the magical year of 1966 there were a ton of American bands that were actual teenagers starting their own bands in garages all around the country. These cats were more into The Stones, The Animals, The Who and The Kinks than The Beatles. 99.9 percent of these songs were about some chick doing them wrong😂 There was a name for these bands…it was called “Punk.” The story goes, some cigar chomping record exec who was inundated with demos from kids around the country (recording became inexpensive at this time) and shouted out “I’m sick of these damn Punk bands!” Punk meaning young kids not weak prisoners. There is a direct line from these bands to the 70s Punkers. Other bands that had this same sound were bands like The Count Five, The Seeds, The Haunted, The Modds…Most were one hit wonders like these cats. As the kids went to ‘nam or to college the sound disappeared, however, in the early 70s Lenny Kaye guitarist for The Patti Smith Group put together a collection of these rock tunes called “Nuggets.” Just about every future punker bought this album and started covering these songs bands like; The Ramones, The Cramps, The Damned, The Sex Pistols, the whole lot! If you dig ? & The Mysterians you’ll dig the rest!
