Theory: this Victor von Doom is from the Multiverse of Madness timeline that got crushed by the Scarlett Witch. For a long time there was talk of one empty chair at the Illuminati table… what if that was Dr Doom’s? Maybe Doom took a vacay-day and got spared being massacred by Wanda. That would make all those Ultron-bots actually Doombots. That Dr. Doom is now tasked with protecting a timeline that no longer has a moral center. “Different Mask. Same Task.” That task is “peace in our time,” and the only way to accomplish that task, in his mind, is to remove all the other threats from the board. No more Scarlett Witches. No more Kang/Kang-variants. No more alternate timelines and incursions. Just his timeline as the new sacred timeline.

Hrmmm...how could Dr Doom, an egocentric leader with an unhealthily overdeveloped desire to protect the place he calls home, an intellect to rival Reed Richards, and an army of robots built in his image, ever be a version of Tony Stark? Honestly, it really works for me, and since it has less time to build because of the change in direction from Kang, this is a smart move because if he's an evil Tony Stark, you instantly know just how dangerously smart he is and the level if threat he can pose. Its perfect from a storytelling stance for me. The ultimate villian of the Multiverse Saga is a variant of the fallen hero of the Infinity Saga. It has beautiful symmetry. It also brings with it an instant emotional conflict for characters like Peter Parker.

RJD auditioned for Doom in the 2005 F4 movie. They like to do these kinds of meta things when they know the deck is getting reshuffled. Like with Krasinski as Richards in Dr Strange 2, this is a way to introduce the character before they introduce the character. They hinted to as much in the lead up to the reveal. This way we could get RJD Doom fighting Tom Cruse Tony Stark. If you're going to do multiverse stuff, have that kind of fun with it.

Do a lot of people not realize Doom is heavily disfigured? So he really has no reason to ever take off/not wear his mask (even if he does, they can make him unrecognizable). They could do this without having any kind of relation to Tony, and just letting RJD do some amazing villain work behind the mask (or make up, if mask removal is involved).

Remember, most of the panel was "Here's the movies (3-4 of them) that we have coming out soon." Which would have sucked and then they added this on. We still do not know the current road map. Well, what do you want then? Phase 4 & 5 have has without question been the most creatively experimental the MCU has ever been. Considering the criticism that the MCU through phases 1-3 was that they all are formulaic and feel too homogenous, they took risks in Phases 4 & 5. Low and behold, those risks didn’t pay off, and fans have been like “bring back old Marvel” or “marvel hasn’t been the same since endgame,” or “bring back RDJ” or “Bring back the Russo’s”. Feige & Co. bring back the guys who have given them 4 of their biggest hits creatively and critically, and now they’re being criticized for that too? And people who want a creative risk, you’re getting RDJ back, NOT as Stark, but as Dr Doom, full stop. That’s as ballsy a move as you can get. Stunt casting or whatever, given the climate of the culture, RDJ as Dr Doom is a decision that takes guts to pull the trigger on. For real, I think it would be even more desperate if it was RDJ simply reprising Iron Man. THAT is playing it safe. THIS just heightened curiosity, whether you like the decision or not, because none of us can legit judge this until it plays out in two years.

This does reek a bit of desperation, but it could, COULD, work if they have a good script. At the very least, I had negative interest in Avengers Khang Dinasty, and now I'm cautiously anticipating the Fantastic Four movie coming next year. So... good move, Marvel. Hopefully they pull through. What I really want from this is a Tony Stark variant that is genuinely gone to the dark side. No misunderstood villain. Can have a tragic backstory, but not one that make him too sympathetic. Go to that Oppenheimer performance and scale it up. And I want old characters who know OG Tony to interract with "Doom," trying and failing to get him to see reason, trying to appeal to a sense of heroism that has been corrupted and festered by too many tragedies. Make it a really gut punch of a movie.

To Answer Adams Question the Movie that follows is Secret Wars which you can't have without Doom, and with Secret Wars being about universes colliding and becoming one, it's not hard to have RDJ's Doom not be THE Doom for the MCU once Secret Wars is over with, so I'm not that concerned over RDJ being Doom as it stands because he won't be the 616 ( Sacred timeline ) Doom

"Break Glass In Case of Emergency" is a great way to describe this move. Bringing the Russo brothers back (who are incredible) and bringing RDJ back (also incredible) is a "please help us get this from completely going down the toilet" phone call. While there have been some decent Phase 4 properties and then with the Kang storyline essentially scraped. The problem with this (assuming you were talking about the Infamous Iron Man storyline) is that it was still Victor Von Doom in an Iron Man suit and not Tony Stark, right? So I am still really curious how they are going to pull this off.

While remaining very skeptical, I'm curious where this leads. Is it simply Doom masquerading as some variant of Tony to gain favor of the Avengers and Co. to set up whatever crazy shit he's planning? Or maybe he pretends to be the real Tony resurrected, painting him as some kind of messiah figure that allows him to gain a massive religious following to enact his will. Will it be a variant Tony, resulting in an emotional dramatic rollercoaster of the the Avenger's hesitating, not wanting to fight their world's greatest hero and their friend (despite being a variant) and instead try to "save"/turn him, causing casualties and dire consequences? Or are they just going to keep him in the mask/disfigure his face to unrecognizable (which fits character) and let RJD do his thing while keeping the whole variant schtick out of it. There's a couple ways it could go right, but way more it could go wrong. I guess, here's hoping.

In terms of Kang, Marvel left themselves pretty covered to pivot away from him.. with Loki season 2 finale, which is after quantumania, they really left it in a way that Loki becoming the god of stories was the end of Kang (for now at least). With Mutants now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, same with the fantastic 4, theyre pivoting to those franchises for fresh blood / story content than they were before those franchises were acquired when they were looking at Kang as the main storyline.

Ok, so many thoughts! First reaction was “oh, that’s so cool!” Second was “Wait, how is this gonna work? Is this a desperation move?” As Whovians we’ve kinda been here “Wait, they’re bringing Tennant back as a bridge before Gatwa?” I have come to we’ll see, we need more details, but yeah, this could work. There are stories with Stark as Doom. There’s a what if body swap comic. They can use this to wrap up the multiverse storyline (Doomsday leads into Secret Wars) and then I am guessing start seriously focusing on X Men stuff afterwards.

What about this for a build up, in the beginning of Doomsday, the league of kang's are all dead, killed by a man, who wants to make sure he is the only one that can control the multiverse, with a few kang's variants trying to fight him off but they can't, and at the end of the scene is reveal to be RDJ Doom's. Sure this diminsh the treat that is Kang, but elevates the treat that is Doom, Considering they are gonna go in that direction.

This is very smart in my opinion from a business respective in creating a lot of positive buzz on the heels of Deadpool and Wolverine, because take a moment and think about it, the rumor of RDJ coming for the last few months produced a lot of positive feedback (and to bring him back as Iron man, in my opinion, would have undid his great sacrifice in End Game, so him coming back as another character is the only option)… Next, unfortunately, because of the Jonathan Majors situations, Marvel decided to pivot their direction mid-phase and Doom was the best option (a lot of people have been clamoring for Doom for a while, me included)…. And lastly and most important, Marvel is coming to the end of this saga and after Averages Doomsday, I believe they will hit a soft reboot (with FF4, X-men, and New Avengers with new actors, plus new villains), meaning for Doom to be a variant at the end of this saga and him being RDJ would allow this saga to end with an emotional hook and with a big bang… Then in the soft reboot introduce a new actor as the true Doom with original backstory and all… That’s how I see it, I don’t think it’s smart and it will be foolish to introduce the true Doom with him being in only 2 movies, then you’ll have to reboot… This in my opinion is the perfect way of doing it…

I think that it will definitely make them money but it it has a 90% chance to absolutely suck and be stupid and completely ruin Doom. Which will hurt them in the long run.

@@EchanteDante I don’t believe it will ruin Doom, because if they are adapting some of the story line of Secret Wars 2015, Battle-world, in which Doom created….and the storyline was all about the execution of Doom’s plan… What makes Doom so good is his rich and complicated backstory (which I believe will not be focused on in Tony’s version of Doom), this will be left to the rebooted new Doom… Also forgot to mentioned there is a comic in which Tony was a version of Doom… So, in adapting these two storylines/and the direction I see them going, no I don’t believe they can or will ruin Doom…

I think this will all hinge on how they introduce RDJ as a Victor Von-Doom. Because it’s a slippery slope, if they try to make him the definitive Doctor…than how will that balance out with The Fantastic 4, and the history between Richard’s and Doom? I think it could work, since Chris Evan’s literally plays both captain America and human torch (which would have been hilarious to see RDJ be Chris’ doctor doom)…But on the same token I’m very apprehensive of Victor and Tony being the same character & not just the same actor. It’s one thing to have the iron hand of doom teamed up with other Dooms, it’s another if he’s the only doom (its like when The Mandaren was only an actor, they inevitably had to retcon it). I will admit though, I always felt that Doctor Doom should have been the next villain after End Game. Kang was a good foil for the Loki series, but I think Doom is a way more threatening villain for the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse.

Looks like they're doing the MCU version of a storyline from the "What If" series of comics in which Tony Stark and Doom were roommates in college and Doom somehow managed to switch bodies with Stark. I think Robert Kirkman wrote it but I'm at the beach and don't feel like Googling right now.
