There is so much to be said about this band and this song. This is the music of my junior high and high school years, and onward for the rest of my life, and the plane crash is a bittersweet part of that as well. Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the most important bands in rock music and for me, they are one of a very few, like the Beatles and Creedence Clearwater Revival for example, where I can honestly say I like every single song on every single album. And they are really good live as well. I got this "Street Survivors" album when it came out, and yes, this song and others were already starting to be played constantly on the radio. I got this version of the album with the flames, and they had just picked up their third guitarist, Steven Gaines, absolutely phenomenal guitarist, and his sister Cassie was one of the Honkettes, the three female backing vocalists. Both brother and sister died in the plane crash, along with front man Ronnie Van Zant and some crew members. Many others in the band were badly injured. It was so shocking to all of us at that age to have this just happen out of the blue, and they were still on this meteoric rise. 😢 The album was re-released shortly after the crash without the flames. About a 12-minute homage to Lynyrd Skynyrd was quickly assembled, with scenes of them and a little bit of dialogue, and then most of it is the studio track of Freebird, and at the end after the plane has crashed, it shows a dove going up into the light. In the movie theaters, rather than showing the previews of upcoming attractions, they replaced them with this for a while. ❤ From a musician's standpoint, the amazing thing about Lynyrd Skynyrd songs is that they are almost like Bach fugues from classical music of all things. They are these jigsaw puzzles that are woven masterfully together, and Skynyrd's use of texture and tone and musical motif is just through the roof, and all of them were absolute beasts at what they did, and yet it spoke to every person. Everybody could relate to all of this. The lyrics are often brilliant and sometimes very emotional. And sometimes just fun, and they know how to really rock hard. ❤❤❤❤❤ I wish I knew what else you'd heard. I didn't see anything else on your channel. The Ballad Of Curtis Loew is a popular one to react to, as is simple man. But they have so many hits and so many amazing songs. If you really want to hear them show off, check out "Honky Tonk Night Time Man" from this same Street Survivors album. Your jaw will drop to the floor.

They had 3 guitar players and all of them could really play. I grew up when this kind of song and musicianship was fairly normal. I know it makes me sound like a cranky old man but today's music doesn't hold a candle to what we had in the 70's. That's not meant as a put down it meant as a fact. Rock Bands in the 70's had some of the greatest musicians in the world. How things have changed.

I too went through the 70’s being born in 1952, best music, bands women everything was live music, cruising in your car a few beers and unfortunately work, but we worked to live not lived to work. This song is about Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, who bought a new car (a Ford Torino), got drunk, and crashed it into a tree, then a house ("whiskey bottles, brand new car, oak tree you're in my way"). The band was supposed to start a tour in a few days, but had to postpone it because of Rossington's injuries. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Allen Collins wrote this song. They were not pleased with Rossington, whose drug and alcohol problems were affecting the band.
@dandare4214 күн бұрын
Then Ronnie dies in a plane crash and Allen paralyzes himself while driving loaded which leads to his own early death. Gary ended up living until 2 years ago. Many other members of the band suffered such brutal injuries that it led to their premature deaths later. Artimus Pyle is the only member of any 1973-77 lineup who is still with us.

@isthison2875 however, That Smell is written by Allen Collins, and he was the primary soloist on the track. I can only imagine what heights they would have attained with, Rossington, Collins, and Gaines.
@isthison287515 күн бұрын
@@joeallegra556 thanks for the reply. I should have elaborated on my thanks to Steve Gaines comment. Allen is great as is Gary. In 78 or 79 my mother gave me all Skynyrd albums for Christmas. I saw a lot of concerts back in the day and my biggest regret is somehow making it to see Peter Frampton but not Skynyrd. The band performed an hour and a half away from my house I'm just two days before the crash. I did get to see the Rossington Collins band and hear them perform freebird. With a Ronnie's hat on a microphone in the middle of the stage, they left the vocals to the audience. There were at least 50,000 people there and everybody knew every word. The whole experience was mystical and even spiritual. Tears well up even now when I think about it. As to Steve Gaines, to my ears, he made the sound of the band tighter, which made Skynyrd even better. That's really all I meant. Head and shoulders might have been a bit hyperbolic. Have a great New Year.
@joeallegra55615 күн бұрын
@isthison2875 not at all. I think Steve Gaines gave them that next step in creativity after Ed King left. Talent wise, overall, Gaines was probably the next up and coming guitar hero. On October 19, 1977, two days after releasing their album Street Survivors, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, South Carolina. The following day they boarded a Convair CV-240 airplane to take them to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they were to perform at Louisiana State University. The plane ran out of fuel near the end of the flight....Despite their efforts, at approximately 6:52 pm the plane skimmed about 100 yd (90 m) along the top of the tree line before smashing into a large tree and splitting into pieces near Gillsburg, Mississippi....Van Zant, guitarist/vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, Captain McCreary and First Officer William John Gray all died in the crash

I will never, ever forget that day. I was working in a record store and the lp was flying off the shelves. There was fire in the background behind the band on the original release lp cover . We had to box every sigle one of the albums and send them back to the record company....cases and cases of them. They then rereleased the lp without the flames behind the band. It was eerie and felt almost like a premonition. I didn't have an original copy but wish I did now. It was just too sad and ironic and I wanted nothing to remember that day by, It was such a shock! I did get to see them before the accident and treasure their original lineup.

@lauriehoward6426 I remember that day. I was 9 and had a bad habit of sneaking out of bed and watching the living room TV through the slightly cracked open door. My parents were watching the news and the report came on about the band and the crash. How many songs do these guys have to you ask? Almost every song they made was great. I'm a metal guy but I find myself going back to Skynyrd more and more as I get older. They were my first favorite band before I went Metal.

With the bass player, i believe it was 4 guitar players. Check out "THE BALLARD OF CURTIS LOWE" studio version by the ORIGINAL band

Leon Wilkerson on bass and Billy Powell on keys/piano transforms the band to something spiritual

LS were the best! I also love the Allman Brothers! They were the kings of southern rock!

That "wall of sound" configuration still works, some backing track(s) on a laptop behind the stage won't replace that.

LS was legendary! This was just one of dozens of great songs they composed and in my opinion their best, lyrically and instrumentally!!! Great anti-drug PSA to boot too! Just about every song they composed tells a story about a point in time in their lives. LS put Southern Rock on the map!

Gotta love them longhaired good ole boys from Jacksonville, Florida. 'Skynyrd lives on, generation after generation. Thank you kindly for reacting to Lynyrd Skynyrd. A seemingly endless library of music.

Being a Florida kid in the 70’s and 80’s we loved Lynyrd Skynyrd John Anderson. Lynyrd Skynyrd gold and platinum album is one of the best albums ever made.

Definitely one of the best Lynard Skynard songs. This is one of their last songs with Ronnie Van Zant as well. RIP

Seen them in june of 77 in buffalo it was an awesome day and nothing goes better with warm weather and Lynyrd Skynyrd ripping through set after set . Sadly afew short months later a tragic plane crash stole the greatest southern rock band that ever existed to this day i still miss what might have been if they never parished rest in peace 🙏

I listened to this in my old truck, headed to school, driving too fast and spinning tires... 1986... you helped me relive it a little today! And yes, I had a shotgun in the back window.

Not a single bad song in the Skynyrd catalog. They were the GOAT of southern rock, hands down. My top three bands: Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd 🤘

In the 70s we got it this good and better all day, everyday, on AOR radio!
