On this particular song it was about Gary Rosington. Gary had a drinking and heroin issue back in the 1970s. He wrecked his car going about 100 mph.

Yes! That album was recorded live at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. All proceeds went to the "Save the Fox" fund, as the theatre was in danger of being torn down. Thanks to Skynyrd and many others, the "Fabulous Fox Theatre" still stands. I've been to many concerts there, and every single one was magnificent. There is a documentary about it.

I remember being about 15 or 16 years old, sitting downstairs listening to some music with my friends. My mom came down the stairs and said she just heard on the news that a plane crashed with some of the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd on board. I'll never forget that day, it was an extremely sad day in music history... I think most people remember (who are old enough to remember) exactly what they were doing when they heard the news. We lost one of the most important people in music on that day. On a brighter note, my daughter is a production manager for one of the concert venues here in the Seattle area.... Last week ZZ top, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Outlaws played. Of course, she's too young to know exactly how influential these bands were back in the day.... Although she knows the music because I listen to these and many other what would be considered classic rock bands of that era. Thank you for the reaction, hope there's more on the way.

Yep, had tickets to the Baton Rouge, La. show they were on their way to next when we heard the sad news. Was lucky to have seen them a couple of times before this tragedy. Like so many other professional musicians gone too soon, we’re always left with the question, what might have been? Still have first press with original album cover of Street Survivors among others. Still think of them anytime I hear their music…

Ronnie had a knack for inserting real happenings into the songs - ie "whiskey bottles and brand-new cars, oak tree you're in my way" He always made remarks about not doing drugs and drinking, although, Ronnie was a "Heavy" drinker, he always had a positive message to steer away from abuse in the music.

Ludes were so much fun they had to stop making them. I think the UK and or South Africa are the only nations still doing so under the name Mandrax. Sadly Tuinol and secondly production also was stopped around then. The spoon reference has a dual meaning. Heroin users shooting up would cook the dope in a spoon to dissolve it and have a cotton ball on rhe spoon to filter the cook thru to the needle. Spoons, smaller ones became popular with coke. I used to sell 14 K gold jewelery. I can't tell you how many 14 k small coke spoons I sold around them. All hanging around people's necks on gold chains.

Ronnie wrote about what he knew, witnessed or experienced. Craig Reed who was Ronnie’s friend as well as Skynyrd roadie says Ronnie would come up with lyrics so fast and never write down it was all in his head. But he later told Craig that he was running out of ideas, that he had said about all he knew already. So he was happy when they brought on third guitarist, Steve Gains because he was also a strong songwriter.

Great great song to react guys! Skynyrd had drug problems for sure but Ronnie got cleaned up before their last album. If you watch their documentary you’ll see how hard they worked when they were younger and they used to make mushroom tea from shrooms that grew on their land. They rehearsed in an old hot shed on someone’s farm. Crazy good documentary! ❤🎸

Ok, the guitar sound. Someone mentioned they added some psychedelic sound (not the 'Sweet Home Alabama type sound, the wah wah sound) & when I listened, it really reminded me of the end guitar solo, by Eric Clapton, of Cream's 'White Room'. Very similar. 'White Room' was 6 yrs before this song & was written as an homage to Jimi Hendrix, the ultimate psychedelic guitarist! The guitar in Needle and Spoon definitely sounds Hendrix-esque. Funny thing was, when Cream was recording 'White Room' Jimi came to the studio & said he wished he could write something like that. They told him to his face that the song was totally inspired by him! So great. Thanks for the reaction guys!

Cocaine was huge in the 70s and a lot of people wore a little coke spoon around their neck so they would have it at the ready when they were at the club or the disco or what have you.

They are one of only a few bands where I literally like every song off of every album. It's just one gigantic collection of gems. This song has been a fan favorite for a long time and wow it is so poignant. They didn't mind doing songs about very real things and getting quite blunt about them. This isn't the only example like that. And I really from a production point of view love that little thing they did at the end, where when Ronnie Van Zant was saying i know, i know, i know, and they started putting a deep reverb on his voice, and then they had the guitar come back in with the same amount of reverb on it like it was far away like the voice, and then fairly quickly they brought it back up locally to where it always was.

It's funny you guys were wondering about which song came first, but the answer to your question in part is right there on the image of the album cover. It has marijuana motif all throughout the artwork, and it is literally called "Second Helping", because it was their second album.

Far and away the most underrated song in their entire catalog. It is my favorite song off of Second Helping and that is an album that has Sweet Home Alabama, The Breeze, Working for MCA, The Ballad of Curtis Loew, Don't Ask Me No Questions, and Swamp Music on it. They had enough problems that three years later Ronnie Van Zant had to basically write this song again only he called it That Smell.

What an amazing "group". You said it, they always play as a group. This brought me back to that one time I saw a guy with a needle and a spoon, and I'll never forget the expression on his face after taking the needle:( sad.

My favorite concert was The Who’s Quadrophenia tour 1973. Skynyrd was opening act.. two months earlier Skynyrd introduced their first Album featuring Free Bird .. Keith Moon was living and jamming. I was 13

Yes the band had issues with drugs and alcohol...alot. They worked their asses off touring probably 330 days a year so part of their survival was escape with drugs. That caught up with alot of musicians in the 60's and 70's and many were absolutely great. Few never got into the drug scene but it was extremely hard not to. Ted Nugent was a noted musician who did not partake in the drug scene even when Jimmy Hendrix asked him to.
