I did some work for a guy who has a dog that extremely matted and filthy. I believe she is an Irish Hound. I know the guy has loads of money, so it really surprised me to see his pet in such a terrible condition. I first did work for him 2 years ago, then returned a few weeks ago and she is still the same.

I will never understand how someone can look such a sweet dog in the face and do that to them. My dog was mistreated by being left in a crate for who knows how long and now he's completely ruined for crate training. I've tried but he will hurt himself trying to get out so he gets to stay in the office while I'm gone. He's perfectly okay in the room while I'm at work, he just can't go into crates anymore and I can't blame him.

@lightsoutisay They do. I adopted my dog from a couple that claimed they just didn't have time for him anymore and were looking to rehome him. I didn't realize how badly neglected he was for a week or so because I've never had a dog in such bad condition before. They were selective about rehoming him, too. They gave him to me rather than the 18 year old who would have stuck him in a muddy yard with her family's six other dogs. I had to deworm him, completely redo his vaccinations, figure out his allergies and get him to gain 25 pounds when he was clearly having digestive issues (had been fed food he was allergic to for potentially over a year). So they knew they were abusing him and seemed to care at least a little bit.

Greed. Probably used for breeding. Backyard breeders are everywhere, often they’re your neighbor, and unfortunately people still buy their pets that way. Dogs, cats, etc - their only worth to people is their money making potential.

Sometimes it's a mental health disorder. Not many people actively choose to be neglectful towards their pets or children. Not an excuse, just a possible explanation. When you slowely get used to a condition getting worse, you don't notice as much as someone new who can see the whole picture, without living in it.

It's because they see them as belongings and not living, breathing beings with needs and feelings. As soon as they stop being cute puppies they can play with and take selfies with, they lose interest. Especially when the dog hits the teenage stage where they become a handful that requires actual time, effort and patience.

Some people are genuinely delusional. Like genuinely, they physically can't see or their brain stops them from making the connection. It's called cognitive dissonance. If you look for c/d, you will see it everywhere, you have to c/d from c/d otherwise you'd lose your mind seeing how many people only see what they want to see. If dogs could talk, our relationship with them would be EXTREMELY different. Lots of people love totally dependant cute little animals that can't advocate for themselves or leave. This is quite a bold statement but it's a hill I would die on- *most* people who have dogs have no business having dogs.

When we got our 13 month old Bichon Frisé , she had spent most of her time in a cage as her owners worked and decided they shouldn’t have got her. We took her home and she was also heavily matted and urine stained too. Her first groom she had to be completely shaved like Jack. After her bathing she shone like a pearl and felt so silky . We promised her she wouldn’t have to go through anything like that again. A few months later and 2 or 3 grooms on, she became a Grande Princess Bichon. Thank you Vanessa and all caring groomers who help these wonderful babies become their true selves. Karen Uk❤❤

This poor boy hasn’t been allowed to “feel” anything in quite a long time. If she is right, and I think she is, about him being left in a crate, he probably doesn’t really know what it is to feel as he was shut away from all of that. To feel excitement for a new toy, joy of his family coming home at the end of the day, the happiness of running after a bird in the park, and, saddest of all, the love of pets and cuddles from his favorite person. Thank you for being one of the first to show this good boy what it means to be a good boy- kindness, compassion, and, most importantly, love.

Just to toss in another explanation for Jack’s behavior (or lack of behavior) is that the poor guy is shut down. Checked out. That’s not to negate his wonderful, super compliant behavior - you could be 100% correct and fingers crossed! As dog trainers we say, “no behavior is behavior. This is why so many dogs in shelters are adopted based on what the adopter is seeing only to get the dog home and after about 3 weeks when the dog is feeling more comfortable do they get the real picture. 😮

Yeah. I don't thinks he's calm so much as he had no energy due starvation 😢. A few months of care and nutrition and he'll probably perk right up.

I was thinking this same thing. It's quite normal for both people and animals to only start letting their real personality out once they feel safe. I definitely do think he's a sweet boy from how he was leaning in for pets at the very end, but once he's settled into a home he might also be a bit more rambunctious and could also act up a bit trying to figure out where the boundaries are since he will no doubt have quite a bit more freedom than he's used to and that could be confusing for him at first.
