Kurzgesagt is lying to you, in every video, even in this one. Because our videos distill very complex subjects into flashy ten minute videos and unfortunately, reality is, well, complicated. The question of how we deal with that, is central to what we do on this channel and something we think about a lot.

Hey Everybody. So as we said in the video, simplification and science communication go hand in hand - It is a balancing act that we take very seriously. As the media landscape has become more and more divided and fragmented in the last few years, we thought we just need to talk to you guys about it and just tell you what we think about it and how we handle it. In the spirit of transparency and just because some of you might want to know our approach. Science communication means that you make a selection of what and how to tell it. That you have to decide where to draw the line between details and simplifications to make a complicated subject understandable. We are still figuring out the best way to do this and are learning along the way. And we are able to do this because of you - Kurzgesagt is fundamentally fan funded. If you want to support us on our journey to figure this science communication thing out you can check out our shop, where we make scienc-y products designed with love and produced with care: kgs.link/shop-155 We love bringing little pieces of knowledge into your home or classroom that inspire you to learn more about the universe in a little more detail. With every purchase you directly support what we do on this channel. Ok! Let us know what you think about this video and our approach! And what else you want to know about the weird world of science on KZbin. Thank you for watching and reading! - Philipp

Can't really emphasize how much I agree and find this important. Opening your eyes to positive skepticism is a thing of CULTURE and that's where it's all based of. If the culture endorses people who blindly decide they're right, that very same culture is demolishing scientific principles and obfuscating truth itself.

@@christhompson4630 Killer is an anglicism in german, so you can leave that part as is. Duck translates to “Ente“. So depending on wether you like the word killer or nor you could say „Entenkiller“ (cause germans love to write combinations of words together and the extra n implies the plural of ducks) or „Ententöter“ for a „more german“ version.

@@kayburcky7146 yeah but it doesn't really fit either, afterall "in a nutshell" is a weird combination of words ....what does a nutshell have to do with something spoken in a simplified or short manner ? I've been watching a lot of Kurzgesagt videos lately and I definitely find them inspiring. Our bodies, the world, and the universe are so fascinating and when I watch videos about our past and future it makes me feel like perhaps I'm not the insignificant speck that nihilist thought has originally led me to believe. I'd like to think that, however small it may be, perhaps I'm contributing to the future of humanity. That makes me want to try even harder in life and reach my potential. I don't imagine I'm the only one who feels this way when watching your videos. Thanks Kurzgesagt.

I’m homeschooled. And my mom told me I should learn Spanish, so I did for like 2 months? Then dropped it bc it was boring. Never had much interest in it lol. I was like. Hey Japanese seems cool. So since then I’ve been learning Japanese 💀. And it hit me like a brick when I realized… if I was in school, I wouldn’t be able to quit Spanish… If I was in school, I couldn’t learn Japanese… It’s really freaking nice being homeschooled 💀
@SamuelSamuelSamuel1
@SamuelSamuelSamuel1 2 жыл бұрын
Also if anyone wonders what I, a homeschooled person does in a day it’s I wake up around 9? (I make myself iced tea, eat breakfast, Occasionally exercise 🤡) And the rest of the day is for what I wanna learn… So I start at 10? And I usually start with math So I do math for usually 30 minutes Then I work on my writing for usually 30 minutes And by now it’s 11 AM (if I’m still not interested in what I’m studying) So then I do 30 minutes of sciences And 30 minutes of history… Any of these easily can last 3 hours bc of how intrigued I am from them 🤣 So at noon, I usually eat lunch, then read. (If not I’m still studying for fun 💀) I read until 3? And then I usually take a nap 😎 I wake up usually at 4, and then I chat with friends, for however long their available… If we don’t chat to long I usually go on a walk with my sister. And when I get home I help with dinner and after that it’s about 7? And for the rest of the night I can do whatever. I could binge Netflix until 2 AM Or stay up until 6 AM Reading LOTR like a psychopath. 💀 (If I stay up that late my naps become hours long 🤣) One night my youngest sister and I stayed up all night watching old movies 🥰. Another night my siblings and I talked about life and mortality as I lyed on their floor until 7 AM. One of the cons of being homeschooled is having a small social circle. Like my brother used to bully me for being gay, and I had no escape sense we shared the same room. But then my mom said “F### That” And made him sleep in the living room for 2 years, before he moved out. Parents can either make or break homeschooling. It can either make you advance in all pursuits in life, or leave you scared and dull-witted It’s about the environment that inspires creation, that decides the path beyond luck or money.

And for those who think science change and old books are irrevelent, you are absolutely wrong!!! Translated books of Newton and papers of Einstein are still revelant today! When I was preparing for University, me and my friends used to study a physics book written in 1978! Science don't change! Their foundation is still the same. And old books explain things even better. Every adult STEM student would know this fact. (And for the comment right below me, you can find nearly all old books online. Personally, I love the concept. There's so much information around that it's wonderful to be able to get a window into all these different sciences and digest some knowledge. For example, many of the subjects Kurzgesagt makes videos on I would never have much active interest in, like biology, but I know that watching Kurzgesagt videos are interesting, and Iove the artwork and have a vague idea of how the immune system operates. The truth is that while science is incredibly interesting in it's overriding themes, it's often presented to people who might actually develop an interest in bland and boring ways, often focusing on small details rather than what it really means. Not many people will sit through a lecture presented by a monotone individual, nor will they remember much apart from the core points, unless they revisit the lecture many times, but these 10 minute videos present the core ideas. If I'm interested in a particular idea, I can go search up more information on it. Overall, it means I develop knowledge that I most likely would have never done, like how weird Neutron stars are and that killer T-cells exist.

If you go off to university to do this subject you will be asked to forget what I teach you now and learn a new, even more accurate set of lies." I don't think it was the best way he could have worded it but I've always taken the sentiment it was trying to convey to heart. "All models are wrong, some are useful." I feel not enough people understand this about "science™." A weird example might be flat earth theory. If you could make a model of the flat earth that was completely consistent with everything and applicable in the real world, then by all means, the Earth might be flat. The problem is, they don't have a model that's completely consistent and the globe earth model is not only simpler, but also consistent and applicable to the real world... So even if the Earth were actually flat somehow, that model would be vastly more useful and likely preferred. Flat earth models are rarely, if ever, consistent only because they aren't observing anything. It's a bunch of "patchwork" to "get around" the fact th Earth is round. So every "patch" they make also cuts a new hole in their theory.

They're not failings, though. I'm not sure calling what they publish "lies" is the right approach to describing simplification in order to communicate with the general populace. It might backfire on them. To use one of their own examples, the Earth and other planets orbiting Sol are close enough to spheres that there is no need to go beyond that in a general conversation about them. It isn't a lie. It's a generally harmless simplification.

One of the most dangerous ideas that’s become common in society is this idea that changing your opinion on something makes you a hypocrite. It doesn’t. It just means you learned new information that you didn’t have before. We are all _constantly_ changing and learning more about the world around us, from the moment we take our first breath, to the moment we take our last. Nobody knows absolutely _everything_ about anything. If you went your entire life without changing your opinions on things, you never truly lived.

@@barioneaccidioso3804 You’re very welcome friend, I’m glad my words were able to help! We’re all out here doing our best to navigate a world that’s forever changing, and sometimes the best thing we can do to help understand that is to remind ourselves that no one _truly_ understands anything, and to be forgiving when we get it wrong. It’s all about learning and growing, and that’s just not possible without a little trial and error. 😉

this idea is why politics suck. the moment you change your mind as a politician you might as well say goodbye to your job. had to do some big scale debate project for school and the people who won were the ones who got others to change their mind slightly (trying to get the best of both worlds) and then just dragging them through the mud. and when they couldnt get you to change your mind they would drag you through the mud in a different way. so being a bad role model politician is literally encouraged

@Thor.Jorgensen

It also made an educated jab at anti-vaxxers, which is extremely topical right now. The video is both about why the channel's videos are oversimplifying scientific and complex topics while at the same time explaining how it is important not to get too overconfident in knowledge about a given topic. At the end of the day. A person is not a Ph.D. expert just because they've watched a Kurzgesagt video and listened to a Joe Rogan podcast.

I have an innumerable, myriad of interests. But obviously as a single human being I don't have the time to delve as deeply as I want to into all my particular interests. I watch these videos when they capture something I haven't quite heard of before or a new position to relate to them, and take a different angle on something that interested me. These people do a great job of presenting just the initial spark of interest. Every time I see one of these videos, it's like I say to myself, I heard about that before! Let me see what they're talking about. So I watch videos like this a lot because it always points out something I didn't know about and peeks my interest to want to learn more. I'm a natural autodidact. I've educated myself in everything that I found interesting enough to pursue. But I also run into the wall of time limits what can I learn in a specific amount of time that's going to be enjoyable and benefit myself. And when I do something like that it's real world. What can I learn that's going to benefit my life and provide a better life for me.. well as a software engineer, there are so many different languages and ways to develop software now than there were 30 years ago when I started, that I am totally bewildered as to what I should actually concentrate on now. When I first started learning software, there are maybe 10 12 different languages and I was well versed in five of them. Now there must be three or four hundred different ways to write code. And I don't have time to do it all! There's no way! So when I see videos produced by this organization I'm always interested in hearing what they have to say. Present a new idea to me, spark my interest in it. I think my favorite one of these was something that I hadn't heard before it was presented on this platform, was the Fermi paradox. I thought that was superb! And as well and enjoyable concept to think about, ponder, and speculate upon. It's because I always and the one who questions, what about this idea? What about that idea? This little organization keeps me thinking about different things I don't have the time to invest in but they present the ideas for me to think about and if I happen upon them somewhere else at least I have an understanding of what these ideas represent because these people present them very well in a very efficient manner. Give you the best example I could give, quantum mechanics and quantum physics. I understand quantum physics intuitively, but quantum mechanics don't have a good grasp on that. But I don't have to. It's not part of my daily life even though it's part of everyone's daily life. But I enjoy the concepts and exploring the concepts This organization does a great job and igniting the interest of science and sciences that I have never been introduced to before in a 58 year old Autodidact. 😊😊😊
