Written by Lennon and appearing on the Revolver album, And Your Bird Can Sing features harmonized lead guitars by Paul McCartney and George Harrison on their Epiphone Casinos
After recording an early version in the key of D major on April 20 1966, John decided to raise the key to E major. He applied a capo to his guitar on the second fret, so he could still play a D major shape. They recorded the finished version on April 26th, which is heard on the album
It's not clear which guitar John used for the rhythm guitar, as he had multiple guitars he could've used during Revolver. He had his Epiphone Casino, a Gretsch 6120, and his Fender Black Stratocaster. His rhythm guitar is fairly clean and was most likely played into a Fender Showman amp, which had a tremolo channel. I hear a very subtle, slow tremolo on his guitar
I did some tests with my Gretsch 6122 and Casino, and settled on the Casino on the bridge pickup as the strongest possibility for John's guitar. I'm plugged into my Fender Deluxe Reverb, with these tremolo settings on the amp-
Vol: 2.2
Treb: 5.5
Bass: 3
Speed: 3.1
Intensity: 4.9
It is confirmed (from multiple interviews and historians) that George and Paul played the lead guitars at the same time, in harmony. They used their Epiphone Casinos, but it's not certain which amp they used. Because they recorded the parts live, and their tones are nearly identical, it's possible they plugged into the same amplifier. This technique was used later on Lady Madonna, when George and John plugged into a Vox Conqueror with two inputs
George and Paul could've plugged into the two inputs of the Vox UL730, or one of their Fender amps. I'm using my Epiphone Casino into my 1965 Fender Bassman. I'm using an Aclam Doctor Robert overdrive pedal, which is a clone of the Vox UL730 circuit
Interesting quirks:
0:41 rhythm guitar plays a Csharp9 chord with the low Gsharp on the Low E string
0:42 the lower harmony plays Bb and Eb together before the C sharp chord
1:11 the lower harmony plays a sustained Bb note before the C sharp chord
1:49 the lower harmony plays an extra E note, pulling off to Eb
1:54 the rhythm guitar ends on an Ab6 chord, basically a G chord with the open high E
