Big advice, make morale and pushing the key aspect of the game, make units give ground when they lose combat or when facing heavier unit. Make casulties very low and focus on morale, if your game could replicate things like battle of cane (which total war can't) it would be a little gem.
@and3rs Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice! I absolutely agree that something needs to be done about the combat, because it's way too simple right now. Morale would probably improve the game a lot, I just fear that it's going to be a bit too difficult for me to implement in a way that keeps the game enjoyable to play!
@starfishjunky Жыл бұрын
Pls don't add morale. I don't want to play a "simulator", just want to play for fun.
@and3rs Жыл бұрын
@@starfishjunky Yeah, don't worry... The game is gonna remain simple (otherwise I would never be able to finish it). What I meant was just something that delays the deaths a bit of the characters, without bloating their hit points. So something like a morale/stamina variable could exist behind the scenes as some sort of a shield for all units until they start dying. That way battles won't end in 2 seconds.

@@and3rs A good compromise is just to enable/disable it in a difficulty/toggle menu whether you want realism or not (morale included, units lose effectiveness and routs once it lost 20/30% units) or not. I think the balancing in the case of morale is more problematic than the actual implementation. Also, iirc while tabletop based Warhammer counts individual unit health, i think Total War Warhammer use some kind of mix total squad hp divided by number of individual units. Unless there's some big hitter monster killing units every swing, squads collapse very suddenly and rapidly as units starts to die. Also TW:Warhammer uses evasion as a kind of damage shield too. Just throwing unsolicited ideas that you probably have known hahaha.

Here are some basic warfare 101 as inspiration for game. I summarized it into 5 points, which I think will help you to find ideas and flesh out game. To win a war or battle It's important to understand 5 points, If one of them is in trouble then you'll have a bad time. 1. Morale 2. Supply 3. Tactics 4. Information 5. Experience 1. Morale is important factor and It's influenced by many factors like sense of security (soldiers next to you) or most important is symbolic and that can be figure, Place or a object. Examples: Flag, Holy cross, Capital city, leningrad, King, Famous leader like Hannibal. This can also be double edged sword It will help soldiers fight but if the object, figure or place is lost then army will break and retreat. The more important it is the harder is the fall. 2. Supply. Pretty self explainatory. Army needs arrows, tools for repair, food! and medicine. For example if army marches through desert without sufficient supplies then soldiers will start dropping dead and by the time they reach enemy it won't be a battle but a slaughter. Lost a battle before one even began. Logistics are blood of warfare and they win wars. 3. Tactics Good use of terrain and soldiers and other factors 4. Information knowledge can also win a battle before it even begins. With information you can set up ambushes and know weak spots. There's also misinformation! You can mislead enemy with false information and then crush them. 5. Soldiers need to be drilled in combat and mental strength. This influences other points. Here's other suggestions Terrain: Forests, shallow waters , mud, higher and lower elevation and different grass textures to make game look better. - Forests : Will grand some protection from arrows and cause combat problems for cavalry . - Mud: Slows downs heavy units and cav. - Elevation : if it's higher elevation then it will grand better protection from arrows and higher range for archers. + Enemy has to climb up. The cav will also have problem going up. - Wheat, long grass : will make game look cooler. Weather: Will make game look cooler and impact battlefield. -Raining : Not much of a impact but will slow down some heavy units as it can create mud. -Heavy wind : will make archers inaccurate -Snowing : Will make archers slightly inaccurate due to cold (Unless it's nordic unit) -Blizzard: Very bad visibility, Morale hit for both sides, speed and stamina debuff and disables archery. -Sand storm: Same as blizzard. The weather also can combine to create worse conditions! I think that's pretty much it so far for now.

that's an amazing start. as a huge fan of this kind of tactics game, something that i hope gets in there is different kinds of terrain underfoot having advantages/disadvantages .... so hills have a bonus for troops on the higher elevation and increased range for missile attacks. rough going terrain reduces speed of traversal and favors defenders. woods areas obscuring line of sight and favors defenders. etc.

I would add one more thing that every new game needs but 1st let me say some ideas: -Archers ( ranged units in general ) to have a strategy when melee approaches to stay in formation or to scatter -> Staying in formation could make a benefit of volley fire while scatter would look like more fire at will style. - Melee units to be able to block ranged projectiles. -Maybe pre selected formations so you change it in the menu? Maybe combine formations like ranged + melee to melee will always cover for that ranged unit? But what I really want is a feature where I could spend a few money, maybe some with 800% value and then a battle pass and then some other features such as paid only hero.
@and3rs Жыл бұрын
Good ideas! And yes, there's gonna be a pre-battle menu where you can setup your units... As for spending real money, I don't think so, I'm generally not in favor of paid content IAPs unless it's a big chunk of gameplay that is added as an expansion sort of IAP!
@Blue_Oysters Жыл бұрын
It would be cool of the shields also effected the battle. Like if units with shields have a chance to block attacks, negating or reducing damage. Units with bigger shields could have higher chances to block, and the same could apply to arrow fire. This way you would have to pay more attention to the weapons and gear that your units use, adding another layer of strategy, and making battles last longer.

looks really fun so far ! if wanting to give more tactical depth the game ( as i see is discussed in other comments ) terrain obstructions ( forests units can't move through, large rocks, and buildings ) as well as adding in more objectives beyond team death match ( get a unit to this point, kill a certain "General" unit , or destroy an object ) another fun thing is - while it could be a physics nightmare, having melee units push back targets they hit ( maybe certain units like maces and axes pushing further back than swords and spears ) could help emulate the ebb and flow of total war battles without the same complexity- while also in theory allowing the player to pull units out of melee ( hit models being pushed away having a slight headstart on running away ) not giving the same pushback to ranged units helps prevent super ranged supremacy- no reason to bring anything but ranged troops if they can shoot away anything that threatens them after all overall looks like a really promising game and i wish you the best ! happy holidays !

Idea: Formation: units with shields can lift their shields up or down to provide strategic advantage against archers and infantrymen. This would weaken the unit if they had it in the wrong direction. Say a infantrymen unit is attacking another, and the other has their shields up, they one with shields up would get less of a bonus in combat. Vice versa with the other formation.

This looks interesting. I have thousands of hours in many Total War games. The first question is: What makes Total War fun? I think it's the combination of turn based map 'strategy' and 'tactical' battles. Secondly, the battles make me feel like a military commander. For example: creating a melee front line, with archers behind them and cavalry flanking around. Successfully executing a hammer and anvil maneuver is satisfying. On the campaign map it's fun to build up my economy via balancing the various game mechanics like food, income, public order, squalor, military production etc. There needs to be meaningful trade offs when optimizing these things, otherwise it gets boring quickly. For example: if I min-max for food production, then I should be punished for neglecting squalor or public order, or income. Attila is a good example of how to create a challenging building system. 3K also has an interesting balance system due to the Wu Xing five elements/colours.

One suggestion. I would increase the number of units in melee regiments from 10 to 20 and decrease the damage of range units. Also, adding a hero unit that you could upgrade between levels would make the player more invested in his army. Another suggestion would be to add a Rock, paper, scissors mechanic, sword beats spears, spear beat cavalry and cavalry beat sword, having archers as support. My last suggestion would be to add a rogue-like element to your game. Every time you beat a level, the game counts the power of your army and give you money in return, you could spend that money in casualty recovery, better weapons or better armor. This currency should be something different from the money you use to buy new units so the player is not afraid to try to beat a strong enemy using number superiority.

Really interesting, and inspiring. I also want to make some strategy game, and I like your idea. BTW, really cool art work(not only map, but also pixel units in game). You asked about ideas for improvements, so here what I have now: 1. Add melee attack for archers, so they can fight in close combat. 2. Reduce ranged attack power, since now I see that archers can deal with anybody from remote, so it looks quiet unbalanced. 3. Add new ranged unit like crossbow archers, make them more powerful, but less ranged then regular archers. And increase reload time for them. So player need to make proper choice which units use and how. 4. Maybe add some actions for units, for example, for warrior with shields add possibility to activate shields, which improves defense against ranged attack, but slow down a little bit. 5. Maybe add more defense for the units in the center of formation. Like if they have unit to the left and to the right size they need to fight only in "one direction". This brings more tactics, as attack in flank bring more casualties for enemy. 6. What if creating some side quest(if it's normal term for RTS genre) on global map to provide player more ways to collect gold. It should be like pause before new major battle. For example, raid on some village and grab as much material as you can.
@and3rs Жыл бұрын

I have a couple of suggestions for the game which i think could improve the fighting mechanics. 1.Cavalry, Spearmen and Hard armored units to add diversity, more tactics into the battlefield, cavarly could be used as a mobile unit to charge into enemies and flank them, however quickly becoming weak after prolonged fighting. Spearmen could be used to hold away enemy infantry units and would be extremely good against cavarly, however less mobile and easily defeatable by archers. hard armored units could be used to advance towards enemy armies while under archer fire allowing other units to advance. 2.Morale system, a morale system that depending on the level of it would make units fight a lot better or simply run away from the battlefield, each unit could have it's own morale level and the whole army could have one depending on whether the entire army would run away. Could add banners that a soldier inside a unit carries, and while holding it it would provide extra morale boost for the troops, however if the soldiers carrying it would be killed then the morales would drop drastically inside the unit. There could also be a general that if dead would provide an even bigger morale drop than a banner. If enough units are forced to escape then the whole army could break. 3.Supply system/Limitations of archers, make archers have a slower rate of fire, and have a specified amount of arrows that each archer can shoot (for example 24), that could be refilled by marching the archers to an edge of the map where a supply wagon would be set allowing refillment of ammunition a specified amount of times.

it looks really fun ! one thing that could be cool to add would be a leader for each side. if he falls the battle is lost so you can use flanking strategies to try to go around the enemy lines and get their leader especially when you are outnumbered and can't win through brute force, I guess troops around the leader could have some bonuses so if you play risky and have your leader just behind your frontline you can have better soldiers. Also cavalry, really fast moving but useless against big groups (unless they are archers).

Have you played 'Bad North' ? Bad North has a lot of the same mechanics you're going for and I've also been looking for a game similar to what you're making. 2 minutes into the video and you reminded me about the game.

As a medieval theme combat system reference I suggest mount and blade. Choose different formation and strategic unit moves could really feel nice in a 2D game. Maybe being able to select unit in custom group.

i really like this concept but imo if you add some stuff from the mount and blade games like the open world, choosing who to ally or fight with, essentially giving players more freedom than locking them up behind missions. Basically giving players a way to create their own story.

When expanding the AI it would be cool to have different enemy commander templates/preset. Like the enemy commander is Cautious, Foolhardy etc. And other obvious stuff like terrain and flanking modifiers as well as varying troop types and army compositions.

I think you should add a feature to the enemy, once they move play a trumpet/cornu sound and have an arrow in the general direction. If the map is big it might be hard to see enemy movement.. Having different kind of sounds per faction could give more immersion. This would rely on an AI to do things of course :) I don't think it is too diffucult to make and probably will add a lot to the game feel.

I would suggest to add points of control to reward spreading units apart and encourage some aggression over just making a defensive doom stack civ 4 style. That and some flanking mechanics to reward maneuver warfare. I might suggest watching some shadiversty and other Medieval tactics to add some realism. I think there should be two types of archers plus slinger and musketeers. First type of archer is causal hunt man archer, they wield a weak bow with little range and armor piercing, but they are kind of a peasant unit. Cheap but useless vs armor. Second type of archer is the kind of archer who been raised since he is child to use a bow in war and can use a proper military long bow. This is the kind of guy who has skeleton deformation from the stress of using such a massive bow. He is the knight of bowmen and can put arrows through platemail at close range with luck. This guys historically existed. Tactics wise they are expensive but their bows have long range and get a major bonus to armor at short range. Third type of guy is the medieval , which actually did exist in the late medieval time. There benefits should be great power and range, (widely inaccurate by modern gun standards is still great by bow standards) but I have the weakness being slow fire rate and that many of troops wielding them are quite poorly trained, (not sure if that is realistic at this time period). Fourth type of the weapon is slinger, and the sling less of an underdog weapon than it might seem. It can be surprisingly deadly even to armor but it also hard to use. I would have the drawback be very low accuracy, but it would have good power and range. Remember to make armor tough, medieval armor actually provided a lot of protection especially versus swords. Swords are kind of like hand gun, little range and they suck vs armor, but they are easy to carry and socially acceptable to walk around a town square with. Great swords are a bit different from normal swords,

Thanks for the detailed comment! The game is set in a medieval fantasy world I'm creating so some things won't be in it, like gunpowder... And yeah, I'm a regular viewer of Shad, Lindy, Skallagrim and the whole bunch, but I'm not convinced adding a lot of complexity is the way to go for this game because it's supposed to be a super simple game. Definitely more unit types and one or two variables more to add a bit more complexity but I wouldn't want to go too far with it!

Units should definitely have more staying power on the field, as they are all seemingly getting killed in a few strikes by sword, with their armour and shield seemingly purely cosmetic. This would have interesting implications on the importance of morale, which should be the main deciding factor in who wins an engagement. A higher-level unit would have more morale, deal more damage and receive less damage. Once engaged, the soldiers would swing at each other until either unit willingly retreats or loses all of its morale, then it would be routed. Not every fight has to be to the death, and it would add more tactical variety with, for example, if a friendly unit to the side of another were to rout, the latter would lose morale. Being outflanked should also impact morale. As well as heavy cavalry charges, and arrowfire should impact a unit's morale more than what they deal in casualties. A unit with sufficiently low morale should rout even at the mere sight of another unit charging towards it. There could even be special perks like rallying your troops to stop a rout and keep fighting units in the fight longer, at the cost of more casualties.
@and3rs Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions! I agree that it would be a lot more fun to play, and it would be very similar to how the Total War games work... However, all those things add a completely different level of complexity to the game and the unit AI would have to account for tons of things. I'm not saying it's wrong or not doable but Total War are massive games and this is supposed to be more of a stripped down version. I'll definitely add a few more variables for the AI to take into account though to make flanking a thing as well as routing, and so on, but I'm fairly sure I'm not capable of creating anything near the depth of the gameplay you're describing! Unfortunately! :(
@KeKcP Жыл бұрын
@@and3rs that's fair enough, but there are probably a million games with similar mechanics and gameplay, so having a bit of extra complexity would help it stand out amongst the crowd. The AI bit is very true, even big companies struggle with making competent opposition in singleplayer strategy games.
