I was there, through these years and later, I achieved green belt and had the so-called god status of wining tournaments, i had two dragons in the circle on my upper sleeve. I’d walk in the dojo after and saw such respect. but then i had great respect for then dai sempai malcolm Anderson. The image i will always remember of Malcolm Anderson was the mystical energy and charisma he projected. i was a kid, barely 19, I was awe of that figure who seemed to walk on air always wearing the hakama, you never knew where the next kick was coming from, the speed and agility coming from the dark subterfuge of the hakama. Malcolm trained extremely hard and really earned the respect. He was known for feats of endurance in the gym and the sauna. As a green belt I felt like i belonged to something, this kid from the western suburbs. i tried to model myself on the mystique of Dai Sempai Anderson. He really did represent the power of the bushido warrior, he was like an assassin, silent, deadly ninja. All you’ve heard about Elizabeth street was true.

I started at the Adelaide Street Dojo in Brisbane in 1974 under George Romeolatis and Dean Watt. I started with Mark Beverstock and watched James Reid, Tony Quinn, Andrew Delbridge and many more go through the ranks. As O’Shinden Malcolm said. It was tough and George took no pity on anyone including us Juniors. They were tough days but we really learnt how to defend and attack.

I caught up with George Roumeliotis just over a year or so ago. He still has wicked technique and his jumping spinning kicks are phenomenal. Hard to believe how old he is and he would put many young martial artists to shame.

The progression of this self worship is destructive to the soul, occultic with self divinity, be careful and have God help us to reach a transcendental state with grace rather than self Pride, the deadliest sin..
