Yes. Karate teaches focus punch and kicks. If you move to the side and a bit forward, they have to stop and re-focus causing balance issues. Ali understood this as well and early on was always moving side to side for that reason.

I'm a Shotokan black belt as well. I have no idea who trained you but my Sensei lived in Japan for several years & watched Okinawan fighters beat Chinese fighters in full contact more often than not. The linear Okinawan techniques were faster on target with the same or more power than the circular Chinese techniques if both were properly done. Chinese kata always looked better though. In the real world, the fighter that trains the best wins regardless of style.

Ahhh the human ego, whether Shaolin Kung Fu Master, Karate Master Etc... Violence begets Violence it's a game that in the end no one wins even if it's for entertainment. All these disciplines if they were true to their lofty teachings of the mind, spirit, discipline, spirituality etc... would never need or have to use physicality. Confrontational Violence is mostly a trap and barrier to achieving ultimate enlightenment. The ultimate achievement is not dominant physicality but the being's ability to be free from it.

Watch the shaolin master's punch to the body, hitting the karate master on the sciatic nerve point. The guy then tries to kick straight after but falls on his own. The next shaolin fighter kicks his opponent in the same place causing pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling in the leg. Down he goes. This is very dangerous as constant strikes on these and other pressure points can cause permanent damage to the receiver of the strike. I've trained in various martial arts for 30 years including learning acupressure and I would never use it in an MMA or similar competition. You don't even need to punch your opponent. A core power strike with your finger would have the same result. So, I don't want the responsibility of causing permanent injury to someone or myself.

Karate master? You don't become a Karate master until you've been in Karate for over 30 years. I lived, trained, and taught in Okinawa for the past 15 years after I've been practicing Karate since 1970. This kid looks like a beginner, and he is Chinese, not Japanese. So where did he learn Karate? There are many styles of all arts, and some of these schools and styles are BS, mostly sports. I know some true "traditional" Karate masters who would destroy most MMA fighters, and I used to train MMA fighters. Sports and SD are totally different, but true masters do not play in sports.

The root of Chinese martial arts can be traced to an Indian Buddhist monk ( bodhidharma) who went to the Shaolin temple to strengthen the weak lazy monks , he took the ancient Indian martial arts from a south Indian village & introduced the 5 animal postures as part of yogic discipline so Kung Fu etc are not for fun & games or entertainment it's a deep spiritual system designed to awaken the kundalini.
