I went to check out the Silver Sky and came home with the Nick Johnston HSS and every time I pick up that guitar, it fills me with joy. The roasted maple neck, smooth neck joint and removal of the third tone knob make it my "Strat" of choice.

The Nick Johnston signature really plays like something twice the price.
@NelsonBlakeII
@NelsonBlakeII 2 жыл бұрын
@@jonathankvex There's a reason for that. According to the retailers, Schecter is selling these at a bargain to get into this space. They've done so well in metal but felt like they were lagging in the Strat department. So basically we're getting a 900-1000 dollar guitar for 750. In the HSS, the only thing that doesn't feel premium is the humbucker. I think about changing it, but it does 80s rock/metal really well. It's not "bad" but I have Fishmanns and Bare Knuckles on my other guitars. Might trade it out for a p90 at some point. Still unsure.

@@rooberry-music I think with all of these "S-types," it is about preference. They all sound good and they all sound like strats. For me, the build and feel of the Nick Schecter is FAR more preferable to a Fender American or Silver Sky(and I'm a huge PRS fan.) But I'm a metal player, so the NJ HSS feels like the perfect strat for a non-purist used to faster guitars.

@@NelsonBlakeII I'm a funk/soul player and to me the neck is just thick enough for thumb round chords, and the action gets lower than any strat I've set up. goes to show what a good instrument it is, we're completely different guitarists and it suits us both.

I got the Schecter Sun Valley Super Shredder in Red Reign a few months back. I absolutely love it. I work at a Guitar Center, and as soon as we unboxed it, I fell in love with it. Took it home that same day. It has everything you’d want out of a super start. Floyd rose, 24 frets, active pickups, a Sustainiac, and an awesome finish!

@zackpack8I find them unplayable because the nut is too small. All the high value copycat brands like Schecter, LTD, Ibanez use those tiny 1.65 nuts. And Fender, Gibson, PRS use around 1.6875. So I have to go with Charvel which uses modern Fender style 1.6875. Its too hard to hybrid pick with that tight 1.65 string spacing.

I own a Eric Johnson and an American Pro Strat. I bought a Nick Johnston Schecter about a year ago after playing one. They are fantastic guitars at any price. Feels like a well made professional instrument. Fit and finish is absolutely perfect. I don't normally play flat radius necks but this one feels very comfortable. The pickups are amazing if you like a hot single coil. You can not get a better strat style guitar for the money.

I am definitely a Nick Johnston fan now and I got the Atomic Green SSS. I discovered him from his Periphery and Polyphia features of course, as most Dj0nt kids probably did as well. I ended up following on the IG at the time, but I wasn't really listening to his solo works. I know he was a Fender player, but later on Keith Merrow hooked him with to Schecter. I was indifferent with his old grey Traditional model, but everything changed when Schecter came out with the Atomic Green and Atomic Coral! I have always wanted a Seafoam Green S type guitar, and spec wise his guitar is just perfect! I saved up for the Atomic Green and also decided to get into his music. Remarkably Human is such an inspirational album! This guitar almost ruined the experience of playing with regular maple neck! Now I have other priorities in life, but I really want the Atomic Coral in HSS configuration! I live in Indonesia and it's ironically not easy to find these guitars, especially the pink ones! Most stores are out of stock (I even had to preorder mine and it was slightly above the regular Indo price, but still cheaper than what they sell in the US or UK).

I purchased the Nick Johnston hss version and don't regret it. It's a great guitar and the pickups are versatile. You can play everything on this guitar. The only thing I upgraded were the saddles to Graphtech ones, just for the string breakage issue related to strat bridges. I only can say good things about this Schecter. Highly recommended! Great review guys! Keep on rocking 🤘🔥

Correction: The mix setting on the sustainiac blends the harmonic and natural note but when you hold it the note disappears and the harmonic rings out indefinitely. The other harmonic setting is an octave HIGHER (which we can hear.) Schecter refers to this as a feedback setting. It’s much higher and can be used to simulate a high harmonic or artificial feedback. With the right timing these settings can be used even subtly to create smooth results. A good example of the sustainiac can be heard from Phil Collen. He’s used them exclusively on his signature Jacksons for many years.

The second coil on the sustainiac is just a dummy cover to fill the humbucker cavity, the sustainiac driver acts as a pickup when the sustainiac is turned off and can be set on the circuit board to sound more single coil like or more humbucker like as well as having an output adjustment control, just depends how it's set from the factory. Also the middle position on the switch doesn't blend normal and harmonic, harmonic mode is the really high harmonics and mix mode is a mix of fundamental and soft harmonics depending on the string and position on the fretboard
@stevieboy444
@stevieboy444 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this. Is it possible to replace the second coil with a decent single coil pickup?
@KandyMan90
@KandyMan90 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevieboy444 I'm not sure how easy it is to remove the dummy cover but you'd also have to deal with a humbucker sized baseplate in the way as well. When I had a Sustainer fitted to my guitar I got the single coil version and had the builder fit a SD Hot Rails next to it for my position 5. Depending on what sound you want the Sustainiac might be good enough for you. Going forward I stopped doing the Hot Rails and just went for the normal Sustainiac sound as it's aimed to sound like a 59 PAF, and while it doesn't quite get there, it's close enough for me once you play around with the controls on the circuit board
@stevieboy444
@stevieboy444 2 жыл бұрын
@@KandyMan90 Thank you. I use 4 & 5 more than most people but at this price point, given the spec, I think it's worth a shot. As you say, I may find the sustaniac fine, if not I'll experiment but I won't bank on an easy fix. Many thanks :-))
@KandyMan90
@KandyMan90 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevieboy444 No worries. If you have a 24 contact super switch you can have the sustainiac change between a humbucker and single coil style sound by grounding a wire on position 5. It won't give a proper quack like 2 normal single coils in position 4 but it might get you somewhere close

Funny how Lee immediately said the Johnston HSS humbucker didn't sound like a single coil, but a split humbucker. I was making faces about how good the split sounded... Also, I have an old Fernandes with a sustainiac style neck pickup. It's a funny little system, and you can do a lot of interesting noises that sound like harmonic feedback.

Such a wonderful guitar! There are some complaints out there of dodgy pots and maybe a couple other tiny things, but that's and why you do everything you can to *try* the guitar you're going to buy ahead of time, or get it from someplace like Sweetwater and have a good relationship with your advisor (at least here in the states). One thing I love about this signature model is that, while it's clearly the "lower level" model, Nick shows up with it all over the place. I wish I had the cash to get the dearest one (as Lee would say), but this is easily the best "lower line" signature model I've ever played and with a little effort you shouldn't be disappointed. I had the Atomic White one before the "pandemic" forced me to sell almost everything. Hoping to get a new one soon.

I must admit I agree with Mid-range guitars and certainly the likes of Schecter and a Gretsch I've bought in the last year for the price it's hard to see how you'd justify spending over 1k unless you really we're more professional. Or for the 4k gibson or fender buy 4 guitars.....now that's what I call a deal

Some lovely tones in that guitar... I confess I've never listened to Nick, life is now too short to hear everyone. It even LOOKS right... there's a much more expensive one as well so I understand, I haven't tried it. What's interesting is that I pulled out of the heap over the weekend a bespoke guitar built by Zion's Ken Hoover in 1989 (though the design by Ken is older than that). Amazingly it has very similar spec to the the latest in "super" strats. Flat 16" board in Ebony, Sperzal (sic) locking tuners, Three Joe Barden hb's in strat covers, an improved Fender type trem. The body is definitely "dinky" with (what is now normal but not back then) cutaway neck joint. Er, I plugged it in and it was still in tune, actually minus 5% on each string. Sounds great. It's 33 years old furchrissake! Talk to you later.. Pete.

The orange NJ was high on my list of potential guitar purchases last year until I played it. The plastic parts look/feel cheap, the switch was "clicky" & clunky, the pickups were very underwhelming and the neck was uncomfortably wide/shallow. Obviously it's all personal preference but, to me, it felt like a £300 guitar at best, especially next to the Charvel I eventually went for which seemed a steal at a similar price.

Ultimate signature guitar must be the Les Paul, but if we're being a bit more serious then yeah I think the JEM changed things massively, it's just that long ago we don't think of it. The RG as we know it didn't exist and they're massive sellers. If we're talking shred machines, the Kramer guitars at the moment, some of them are signature models but without the name as the player has since moved on. The Jersey Star was the RS for Richie Sambora, the Nightswan was Vivian Campbell's, the 84' Eddie Van Halen etc.

My first guitar was a 14" radius so I've always liked the middle ground of not too round not too flat 20" is like a wall and felt weird when I tried one. I've owned a starcaster for years with a 10" radius and I'd say that's as round as I can tolerate, but bending is annoying play on it for me. I'd love to try a 7 string guitar with a 12"-16" that way you get all the goodness of round and flatness where you need it.

100% a modern strat with a flat neck that has a nice and traditional look is cool. I like the AZ's, but would prefer them as an rg. (They just don't hit the mark on the more rounded thing)

The zach myers prs was a guitar that I bought because of the build quality rather than being a myers fan.

Honestly I think you put a little too much thought into the radius. 99% of Gibson guitars are a 12 inch radius which in comparison to fender is pretty flat.

flat radius guitars will spoil you, i have a few guitars with 20in radius and when i go back to a rounder board i feel like i have to work for it just a bit more.

This may be a dumb question but is it harder or easier, to do bar chords, with a flatter fretboard, like these guitars?

You're gonna feel that your hand position is way flatter. The majority of people would like a more rounded fretboard.
