Nick talking about his process of learning some of the fundamentals, it's great to hear. I still remember my joy at discovering I could play exotic-sounding stuff by playing a Phyrgian Dominant mode over a drone E or something and using octave chords to that effect - it was liberating, exciting. My musical knowledge was severely cut short compared to what I could have done, but I admire those like Nick who have taken it much further.

He plays backbeat, he phrases as long as it's good for the song, His technique is often out of the box, his fast passages are full of taste, he combines "old "school with new. And the compositions are pretty cool. A great artist. His story about being frightened when you play in front of people is very on point.., Glad he shared it. His nervousness in the beginning of the seminar covered with a little pack of snack food... :)

24:30 exactly right! Technicality is the pursuit of the novice guitarist, perfect note choice over chords becomes the pursuit of the journeyman guitarist.

I tell my students to pursue the beauty they want to create, the technique will follow that.
@chrisking66953 жыл бұрын
All skills are perishable. Do you think pros never work on technique? Novices have to focus on technique over their musicality. Without having the ability to play you cannot translate what you feel into notes.

@noir46594 жыл бұрын
KZbin's volume normalization only turns down things that are constantly over -13 dB lufs back to -13, but doesn't turn up quieter things. If you upload the audio that are consistently quiet, say -20 dB lufs, it would sound about 7 dB quieter than most music you hear on youtube

This is a message for Nick Johnston. Nick, your a great player. I know you always say that your not particulalry interested in " gear", " amps", "pedals" etc... BUT!!! you must know, that these things have a direct effect on your sounds! Youre amp is THEE VOICE OF YOUR SOUND. I find it very difficult to believe your not aware of this. regardless, i want to share MIND BLOWING AMPS WITH YOU ( and everyone else who sees this message ) The amps are all made from amp maker, Bill Landry. ( landryamplification.com ) Check out his amps! they are seriously, unbelievable! all of his amps are crystal clear sounding, literally! every note and sound is upfront and center! the picking sensitivity, the sustain, the clairty, the harmonics, the tight, punchy, articulate dynamics of your playing, ALL there! PLEASE! as a musical virtuoso, you NEED TO HEAR THESE AMPS! ( and all the other virtuosos do too! ) check them out.. SERIOUSLY.........
