Pretty silly. I can tell you that you can run low output pickups, any kind on a high gain amp and still get high gain tones. Runa hot p8ckup on. a low gain amp will still get you low gain. Youre not going to get a metal tone by running the highest output pickups into a jcm 900 or a fender twin reverb. You will however get a metal tone with single coil vintage output pickup into a marshall jvm.

While what you say is largely correct, it IS possible to hit the front end of a low gain amp with a pickup + clean boost (to simulate an outrageously hot pickup) to get some pretty nasty tone. It'd be interesting to see in a shootout, don't you think?

I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know, but here goes...The numbers on the fronts of the amps are fairly arbitrary. They aren't really telling you much about the actual resistance at each "notch". You'd need to open it up and put a meter on each pot for that. But I think rather than setting the two amps to the same settings, a better exercise would be to set the 100W where it sounds balls, then come back and try to get the 20W to match it, if not in the room, at least in the mic, and then talk about the different settings you had to set them to and why. Anyway, a fun one as always. Thanks for the vid!

yep, those numbers are mostly an average wattage if you will, dsl20 for instance says that the range is 11-30W.

I own the V40 and I can tell you with the master at 3 o'clock, like they dimed it in the video, it's one of the loudest things you'll ever hear. Playing in a room and sitting right next to the speaker, I wouldn't dare to play more than a few notes on that volume.

Rob's explanations of the difference between the two Victory amps (around 9:00) is so perfect. I closed my eyes and listened for the difference and when Rob gave his instant review after it was such an incredibly well worded version of what I was thinking. He prefers very different tones to me but his ears are incredible and when it comes to pure hardware the guy is so so proficient

I'm getting feeling that tooo many youtube influencers and pseudo-reviewers is putting that unit somewhere to be visible. I'm starting to have feeling that it is Universal Audio's way to push it. I know it is awesome hardware and I was thinking about that pretty seriously. But this is used mostly as just an attenuator. And it not the only one. And not definitely the best one. And you do not see any other, only UA OX. Dont' get me wrong I like it, would love to own it (but not for that hi-price) - that's just my feeling like kind of advertising the UA OX.

The speaker wattage handling is a big factor too. Running a low wattage amp into high-headroom speakers takes speaker breakup out of the equation and can sound kind of sterile.

I've found that 30 Watt is kind of the minimum for that 'big' sound mainly due to transformers and having headroom allows you to get plenty of low end dynamics without it distorting. I like the dirty clean sound of an Ac30 and compared to say an AC15 an ac30 just has a bigger punchier sound. I was always a 15 Watt amp player and am now wanting more watts, not for volume but for that headroom and dynamic. I want an AC50 and a hiwatt just for that kind of headroom and big bottle punch although I love the compression of el84s until they get fizzy.

@@boggeshzahim3713 In a 'live' situation the sound pressure waves from the loudspeaker vibrate the body of the guitar, that vibrates the strings, the pickups pickup the string vibration, the pickup signal drives the amp input and the amp drives the loudspeaker. And so on... At high enough loop gain you will get sustained feedback - a note can be held forever (well a long time). At lower loop gains (even relatively low volumes) you still get a more responsive feel. With a good compressor or even some fuzz or overdrive pedals you can easily get enough loop gain for 'infinite' sustain even at low volumes.

Volume/headroom is certainly interesting. I have a 20 watt JCM800 and a 100 watt JVM410. Dirty, there's hardly a difference in volume levels with each volume around noon. It's the cleans that are so completely different. Different amps, but I also get way more dynamic range with the 800 vs the 410.

I love the 50/100 watt sound attenuated...it does not compare to 40 w it just don’t ....and/ but I can’t carry a 4x12 and a50/100 w head it’s just to frikin heavy And besides nobody does that here in Toledo it’s like all 40watt tops..in small clubs... Greg Koch came to town and played for 50 people in a small venue and blew every one away with the koch amplifier..sounded soooo good .....but he nailed the volume and sound at 5

I've owned and played lots of high and low wattage amps. Both sound and feel different. It depends what you want. Ideally, trying each to find what you want is the best thing to do. :)

@@napomania I personally have a DSL1CR with Genalex Gold Lion tubes. I never use the Ultra Gain channel, as I personally find the tones on that channel to be pretty much unusable. The Classic Gain channel, however, is lovely. It's worth noting that the DSL1 (both combo and head) do _not_ feature master volume on the Classic Gain channel. That means that changing gain characteristics on that channel also changes the volume. It's also worth noting that the tone of the amp changes whether you're operating at 0.1 Watts vs 1 Watt. It's not a massive difference, but the amp does sound better at its normal 1 Watt operation setting. It's quite apparent that the amp uses the tubes differently on the different power settings. I'm an apartment dweller, so I would only use the DSL1 at home. At 0.1 Watts with mine dimed at home, I literally can only play before 6 p.m. to avoid complaints. I occasionally let it rip at 1 Watt, but for less than a minute and _only_ on rare occasions. If you go for a higher DSL power rating, note that all the other models are master volume designs. I think it's also worth mentioning that the wee DSL1CR combo did find its voice quite nicely after a few months of pounding. The 8" Celestion Eight 15 takes a bit of time to break in, but sounds quite good once it does. IMO, YMMV and all that. Pete is not a fan of small cabs and the videos reflect that. However, the videos also don't have the possibility of time to break in. I don't have any recordings, but I can say that over time I have noticed a significant improvement in tone. My DSL1CR is not the amp today that I bought two years ago. It is much better now. Full disclaimer: I found the Marshall-supplied tubes to be flubby. A set of Genalex Gold Lion tubes tightened up the bottom end nicely and added sparkle to the top end. In 2022, that would also be quite an additional cost given the situation around tube availability. As such, I strongly recommend playing one of these amps prior to purchase.

Honestly, being someone who owns an EVH EL34 50w and a Mesa Rectoverb 25w I gotta say that size makes a HUGE difference, actually these low watt amps are all toys, they're cute to decorate the studio or your bedroom, you can actually match their sound with a good plug in because they lack the main thing of a 100/50W: HEADROOM and PUNCH. My EVH mops the floor with the Rectoverb, it's not even close, the punch, the headroom, the low end, the high end, everything sounds way bigger and meaner.

My 100w Peavey is a beast and virtually unusable at home. On stage, well, it doesn't need mic'ing up, even bigger outside gigs! Most gigs I never get past 4 or 5 on volume! Why 100w? Clean tones! Headroom is immense!

I bought the DSL40 after Lee was explaining that the preamp in the 100 and the 40 were exactly the same and he did note that the 20w and the 5w shared a preamp that was a bit different to the bigger ones (probably just less channel options etc) but I dare say that might be enough that they will behave a bit differently when being swept through the controls. The 40 (even in 20w mode) while it will do quiet... it's still too much to get the best out of it at home IMO. I guess the 20w (in this case will sound better with the master volume up to about half I reckon, probably the same for the 100w but half way on that thing will just be way too much in this situation (that's why we have an Oxbox) It would be interesting getting the DSL1 head and comparing.

I have a 600W amp... Or 400W depending on what Ohmage I hook up. - But it's also a solid-state power amplifier with a tube pre-amp, so it's not the same. - I guess they decided on that much juice to kind of give it the same kind of driving power towards the speakers. - Then again, I usually don't turn it up thát much anyway, but it's available. And I guess it would be a bit more consistent between different levels.

Personally, I prefer a lower wattage, as long as I have enough headroom for what I want to do. Certainly the big Marshall has more bottom end, which sounds awesome on it's own, but that's not always desirable in a mix. Horses for courses though :)

I have a Mesa 25 watt head and it compresses when I use an attenuater with the volume halfway up! But it has an eq in it. So I got rid of the squishey sound and brightened it up. So just use an eq pedal to fix it!

The Marshall DSL20 sounds much better with a tube upgrade. I replaced the preamp tubes with Electro-Harmonix brand and that took away the spongey muddy sound. It made it brighter, clearer and more Marshally. I put Gold Lion KT77's in for the power tubes and that seemed to make it sound much fuller all around.

Both Marshalls sound great. Putting each through a 4x12 really has an effect on sound. The 20w head would usually be put through few speakers and so the sound would change again. I've seen reviews for the 20w head and you've managed to make it sound different again! Just shows the room you're in and mic setup really matters. Does anyone know which mics they were using?

As someone who started with a 15W practice amp, then moved up to a Peavey Bandit, then a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, a Twin and finally a Mesa Mark V, I can say without a doubt, the best tone is ~100W tube amp. And particularly a 100W tube amp through a 4x12 cabinet (which I don't have because of portability). A full stack. It's not even a question. But there are other considerations. If the money, volume or weight is too much for you, by all means get what fits you. I have a 2x12 cabinet for that reason. But the facts are the facts.

I just played a jazz festival gig and one of the guys played a 50 watt solid state boss katana and absolutely slayed. Had the best tone out of anyone that day. You don't need a 100 watt amp to play big shows because big shows have big PAs. It's all in how much head room you want for cleans.

I used to gig with an old Carlsbro 50 Top from the 70's. 4 knobs. We were so loud at a pub that the pub 1/4 mile away got a noise complaint. We weren't asked back.

I’ve got a dual rectifier rectoverb 25 (25 watts el84) and a dual rectifier roadster (100 watts 6l6), both Mesa/Boogie. They’re both crazy loud but the roadster has a lot more headroom and low end girth. *giggity* The different tube types might make more of a difference as a caveat. The lower gain tubes bloom sooner which is fun! Love both btw High and low wattage is all good in my book 🤘🏼 As a point of reference I also have a Mesa Lonestar Classic which runs stock at 100 watts with a quad of 6l6 and I swapped it to lower wattage 6v6’s and I’ve been very pleased. Went from 100 to roughly 40-45 watts. Still has many of the same characteristics but at more manageable volumes and pressure feels; especially in a smaller club/room.

I have a PRS SE Paul’s guitar and a Marshall DSL 1CR, love both as a beginner. But, if I want more voluminous sound, I think of getting myself a 1x12 Marshall cabinet soon. My goal is to have massive tone, but yet quiet enough not to upset neighbours. Would the 1 Watt be good enough through a 1x12 and also with some pedals (like the Boss GE 7 and a delay, wanna get that cool Adam Jones tone down lol) ? Cheers

Been using a 15 watt Princeton Reverb to gig ever since I bought it in '76...…….. loud enough for small and medium sizes rooms and we mike it in large spaces or outdoors …… Blues Rock and Classic Rock...…. where can you use a 100 watt amp these days?

I personally went for the 100w DSL over the 20w version because the 100w has a master volume. It’s way easier to play at low volumes and still sound great.

Can u guys compare the 100w jcm 800 to the 20w studio jcm 800 because I have read that there is no sponge sound on the studio 20 compared to the 20 w dsl. Maybe compare the 2 20 w Marshalls???

Im keen on the marshall dsl 1hr. But have marshall 1936 2x12 speakers that does 8 ohms mono 16 stereo. I wish to use the setup to record n bedroom use. I have a magnum44 to up the power if required as i did with my bias spark through the head set jack. Will this amp work for me or do i need the dslhr 20/ 100 theyre kinda expensive?

Very interesting, thank you for the excellent video! I hate to admit it, but to me the bigger amps definitely sounded better. I personally quite like smaller amps since I don't play live and they don't take quite as much room while still sound good (the lower pricepoint also helps of course). I'm quite curious, do Kemper profiles of the "same" amp in two sizes sound similar?

How many amps run out of steam at 12oclock?? Quite a few, I've never been convinced with the small amp thing especially with high gain Marshalls, the clean fenders ie hotrod deluxe are very loud but you need pedals, that would be a good shoot out, pedal driven v amp Gain volume levels

How about a 30 watt Marshall JTM45 that has a tube rectifier. These amps are called Plexi's and are known to be LOUD and Spongy (because of the tube rectifier). I just received mine, new 2 day's ago!

Its really quite impossible to judge the differnces in a test like this. The only fair comparasion would be to make a live recording where you play with a real band at real volume and switch between the various amp/speaker conigurations during the song, and do it in some different styles. A 20 watt amp may be just perfect for a country band in a small club while you may need 50 to get a nice fat full tone in other music styles and conditions. Still, I really like your videos!
