I'd love to see a modern take on it too. It seems like it could be positioned as a strat competitor. Have some with HSS and HH pickup combinations, drop the pickgaurd, or maybe just use the bottom half, add some competition stripes. It has a lot of potential.
@furtherdefinitions1 Жыл бұрын
@@megan_alnico the one original Epiphone that would be a legit strat competitor would be the Crestwood Deluxe that they had in the 60's, with 3 minibuckers, their equivalent of the SG Custom. It is a rare model when it was made, I believe only a 180 or so were made between 1964-69. A French company reproduced it beautifully and I would love to see Epiphone re-release it.

Just bought the Crestwood, and I love it. It beats my 68 SG in every way, and is very versatile in its tones. Its light weight makes it easy to carry and I can play many styles on it. The minibucker has become my favorite PU. I was always a P-90 fan, but this bridges the tonal ranges of both the P-90 and full HB, the best of both worlds. BTW, the idea that this was a prototype to the SG, yes it was. It came out 2 years before the SG, and they just sharpened and angled the bevels for that "batwing" or "devil horn" look. This has now become my main gigging guitar because it has a really broad range of tonal expression. I love it. My earlier comment must have been read by Epiphone as they have re-released the original Riviera and Sheraton. Wish they still released the other two I mentioned.

The Wilshire district is one of the major areas in Los Angeles (pronounced "will sure"). Wilshire Boulevard is one of the main streets running through L.A. A coronet is a kind of crown and it was also an American car in the 50s. Crestwood also continues with the royal "crest" theme. If you stand a double cutaway body up, you kind of get the shape of a crown with the double cutaway and neck joint.

When I was a teenager in the eighties my main guitar was a 1980 American standard Strat. I still own it I still play it. At the same time.I was given an old Epiphone cornet and it sat in a case for 30 years. A few years back I restored it and completely upgraded it, now whenever I want to play along with Steve Marriott or Peter Frampton in humble pie I use my Coronet(I don't have any tremolo on mine). The thing is sturdy as hell it's built like a rock.Alao,to a player who's been playing a while the neek feels really nice to play.Now I wish I would have dug this thing out 20 years ago and got it up and running nicely because I didn't even know what I was missing out on.

Great to see Epiphone reissuing these. They were definitely not student guitars back in the ‘60s, however. Epiphones were made in the Gibson factory by Gibson workers. Almost all Gibson models had Epiphone equivalents that sold for the same price, some sold for more. In the solidbody line, the Coronet was the SG Junior, the Wilshire was the SG Special, the Crestwood was the SG Standard, and there was a Crestwood Deluxe that was Epiphone’s version of an SG Custom. (Drake Levin of Paul Revere & The Raiders used one in the mid-1960s.) The first Epiphone solidbodies had the equal-doublecut shape of the Wilshire, but slab-bodied like a Fender Telecaster. At some point they got the contoured edges, probably around 1960-‘61, still with the 3-on-a-side headstocks, and around 1964 the treble-side horn got shortened and the headstock went to a batwing six-on-one-side configuration, which lasted until US-made Epiphones were discontinued in 1969. These new ones are basically ‘62 reissues. Around ‘63 or ‘64, the Wilshire got mini-humbuckers in place of the P-90s, and there was a Wilshire 12-string around 1965. I’ve been looking for one of those ever since I saw it in the Epi catalog in 1965. They’re so scarce that I’ve never seen one in the, er, wood. And I used to have an early ‘60s Epiphone Broadway, their equivalent to a Gibson ES-175DN. Big hollowbody, two mini-humbuckers (out of phase!), Frequensator split tailpiece. Another one I wish I’d kept!
