I think you are on a winner there Colin. Epiphone would do well doing more of their own designs rather than just doing cheap copies of Gibson models. A sweet instrument.

Another great video Colin and I'm glad to see another Epiphone reissue featured. Makes you wonder why its taken them so long to get some of these guitars out considering how long ago they were originally made. The mini humbuckers sound pretty quacky on certain settings which is great. I've been really impressed with what Gibson/Epiphone have been doing with the brand in the last couple of years. The quality has gone up more than the extra cost. Epi seemed to me to have begun to realise that they have really something special in their back catalogue with so much history to drawn upon. We are seeing long forgotten guitars re-emerging for a new generation to appreciate. The guitar featured was pretty rare and difficult to get hold of back in the day. Btw I have an Italia 12 string with mini humbuckers and it sounds really good.

Not sure if anyone else has said anything about the pickup codes - but here is my guess - P=Pro,- MH = mini-humbucker, N=nickel, HB = humbucker (seems redundant), N or B = neck or bridge, C = Crestwood.

The mini humbucker is the most underrated pickup. They take effects brilliantly, they do everything from swampy blues to shoegaze and maybe even metal. I've always wondered why the offset guys don't get into them more? The only person I've seen who really appreciates them is Josh Scott from JHS, his Relevator guitar is based on a Jaguar and it has minis and I think they really do make effects pedals sound 10% better, I think that guitar sells alot of pedals, cant believe the rest of the world hasn't caught up. Best kept secret in the guitar world I reckon.

Personally dig single coils, but the mini-humbuckers have that frequency that is missing in the full sized buckers😎👍
@Barncaster12 жыл бұрын
The Gibson style mini humbucker was always excellent in the neck but often lacked grunt in the bridge. This dates back to when the factory had one spec for the pickup so identical impedance pickups were fitted neck and bridge. Depending upon application, this either resulted in a great sound in one position and an iffy sound in the other. Over the years, the industry has learned to wind position-specific pickups so there is no volume drop between positions. We see this on the Crestwood review here, and it sounds glorious. Given this approach, and some other tweaks, the minis I wind work very well. With some magnet array augmentation, they can approach the grunt of Firebirds, whose bobbins and baseplates they share.

That is one of the best vibrato designs I've seen! The cam on the thicker strings is bigger so that they drop pitch in sync with other strings so when you play a chord the whole chord pitches up and down without going out of tune and they've eliminatedthat keeper bar thing that you usually see on bigsbys...its brilliant, I want one of these!

I did a search and finally found the answer!!! The Epiphone TremTone vibrato has an asymmetrical roller so when you use the vibrato on chords it gives a "pedal steel guitar" effect. It looks like it can be changed to a symmetrical roller too, I wasn't going back down the rabbit hole to find out though!!!

Another cool guitar! I'm perusing your older films again while you're off working, Colin. I bought the Epiphone 150th Anniversary Crestwood Custom Electric Guitar in California Coral color 10 months ago. I love it. It came with a hard shell case, but the outfit cost nearly 2x as much as the one in the film. I went with the it for 2 reasons: I like the control layout on the later '60's models like mine, and I do prefer the bat wing headstock. That said, I would be happy with the one featured here.

I like this design, including the 3+3 head with the "Epi T" badge. The Wilshire with the P90s I liked better, but what do I know. Between night shifts in the US Navy for 20 yrs. & at NYC Subway (the Underground) system now retired I'm still up most of the night, watching your videos. I enjoy the way you look at the guitars, like the average "Joe Blow". I've gone a little further than you have as I'm a model railroader, deal with easy electronics & have rewired all my guitars from stock. I look at guitars as 1:1 scale models. All guitars have had pups changed, all pots changed to CTS pots (from wear or better control). Try looking into changing the tubes (or switch to Yellow Jackets) in the Hot Rod Deluxe. to help tame the loudness of the amp. I changed tubes (still loud). Don't have that abrupt volume change at #2. setting. Plenty of KZbin vids on this. Got hooked, became a subscriber.

You were Zen with the Crestwood, says a lot about the guitar. I've been wondering a lot about mini humbuckers and this looks a great "budget" offering to get into them. I've an itch to have one Firebird pup and one Mini HB pup in a guitar too so this might be the one to mod.

Cheers Jim, yes i'd say this is a perfect guitar to play for a bit and then mod as and when you feel like it 😎👍

There's something inherently cool about this guitar, and it's affordable. I'm getting one!

I am currently doing payments on this one myself. In a fb group to show this model exists and 200 members like it a lot.

Pssst...Hey, just recently found your channel. Very cool. Really enjoy your assessments, reviews, upgrades... . A Crestwood is now on my radar. BTW, you are of influencing my playing style, too.

Morning. Great video again, I think every time I watch your videos I have an urge to look for that particular guitar and think about buying one, so thanks for controlling my brain. Anyway, mini humbuckers. I had a vintage(brand) v100wr. Nice guitar a m d sound. Maybe one for you.

I bought one based on your review recently had surgery and can't lift heavy stuff so my les pauls are ruled out at the moment so I decided to give this a shot as I will be going back to uni hopefully in a few weeks and needed a light guitar, I personally am meh on sg's but this caught my eye, decided to watch your review as I love the no nonsense reviews, it turned up today and I love it and immediatly started writing riffs and had all my friends asking me "what the hell is that" (endearingly) they think it's proper cool and have never seen a guitar like it. It sounds a lot more versatile than your standard humbucker and the pots are a class touch! I remember when I was a naughty school boy in detention all the time reading a guitar history book and this crestwood custom same colour and all was in it and I never thought I'd get my hands on one so it is slighty surreal for me haha. Also (once they come back into stock) do you plan on reviewing the noel gallagher riviera? I must admit a lot of the current reviews are total shit in terms of playing or any proper details so would love to see the working mans take, not the business salesmen approach.

Cheers Lawrence, glad you are liking this guitar it definitely stands out and sounds incredible! 🔥 I tried to get the NG Riviera but no luck so far... hear the full story in this weeks review of the Joe Strummer Telecaster!
