A good tip for getting more clean or usable volume a low wattage amp is to put a tube overdrive pedal set clean into the amp with the gain and volume on the amp around 3 or 4. Use the pedal for setting the volume. I run a Hiwatt tube distortion pedal into my little turd Bugera v5 this way with a Wampler Belle od and a Way Huge Saucy Box as my drives. It's 100% more usable. How well does the line output work direct into your DAW - any degradation in tone?
@michaeltravis35623 жыл бұрын
It’s really good straight into my interface. I use Logic Pro (and a few plug ins) to get cab/room tones. I have a dedicated studio so I can play loud and mic the cab, too. I find the output straight into an interface/daw is capturing the best attributes of this amp. That’s to say the sonic character of the speaker/cab is “good” but not so good that you’ll miss it. It’s nothing special. The OD, boost, pre, and power amp section is 90% of this amp’s magic in my opinion. You get all that with direct output.

Of course I’m the type that dimes everything all the way and rides my volume knob on the guitar. 15/30w is plenty and 10” speakers are totally under rated and more guitar players should give them a go. They have lots of punch. I really wanted to hear more of the 8” 1w amp, I want a small living room amp that I can crank and get that sound. Really want the old school lunchbox blues tone. Sounded like that on the affordable tube combo amp roundup ye did a few years back, sounds like long hair, a handlebar moustache and open shirted hairy chest ;) Best living or bedroom amps. But also, best recording amps, with the pre-amp line out, or the low wattage and smaller speakers that don't push buttons of a small room's modes. The line out is nice to have with the cheap IR loader pedals available; or into audio interface then do power amp + cab sim ITB. But, another could be putting it into a pretty clean affordable more powerful power amp (Vox MV50? or SS/Class D). Then into a bigger sounding cab. Then you have a small vibey tube practice and recording amp, that can be converted into something more powerful.

That epiphone Les Paul in the intro sounded surprisingly good.

The 8 is Old School and has yo be used crancked with a reverb or delay in front added of a low gain OD ( klon like): and there you go! Its a fantastic amp!

Regarding small amps and gigging. I remember the inimitable Micky Gee using a piggy back Fender Tremolux with 2x10 for a lot of his gigs. Tremolux is rated 15-20 Watts. No problems for him against bass and drums, and Terry Williams is no quiet drummer. And Micky Gee used a lot of clean tones, as Pete probably knows both being Tom Jones related players. Maybe it's that second speaker that makes the difference. Fender Bassbreaker 15 with an extension speaker, giving 2x12, is well loud enough against bass and drums.
