Guys you got to remember that a practice amp under 100 quid will be played in a bedroom quietly enough so parents / room mates cannot hear in the next room, I dont know why you are banging on about who's is loudest. You should have put them on volume 1 and see who's has the best sound and tones at low volume.

I would disagree. If you're young, youre likely gonna get an amp that's as loud as possible so you can practice with your band, and an amplug/marshall ms2 for bedroom. That's what I did

Orange amps have amazing cleans just not what they are known for. Modeling amps may have all the bells and whistles but if it's your only amp you'll be better off with a non modeler.

Totally agree. Your first guitar shouldn't be a really nice one, it should be an ok one that's not complete garbage but one that you still like. That way when you finally get your dream guitar (I recently got mine- a PRS S2 satin that I love dearly), it'll mean the world to you & you really appreciate it. Plus a lot of beginners don't stick with it so that expensive gear will end up being a waste of money.

Back in high school, I went to Guitar Center to pick out my Christmas present and had about a $100 budget. This was when the V1 Mustangs first came out and I played through it and was surprised. I didn't even look at the price thinking it was over budget, but it was right around $100 at the time. I wouldn't rule out modelers for beginners. It allows new players to find a sound they like and experiment with effects. Then after a year or two of playing, when they want to upgrade, they have an idea of what they like.

Definitely prefer the orange. I even have the orange crush 20ldx which i bought as my first amp and recently I took it out of my cupboard and gave it a play and mate it sounds alright for a lil practice amp. I tried that marshall one time and rob isn't joking the clean is definitely louder than the gain channel which i think is weird. But tbh Im not a big fan of the marshall mg series and I love marshall amps but if you were to go marshall I reckon its worth saving more for the dsl range at least :)

One of our old guitarists used a Focusrite into Amplitude into the PA. It sounded fine. Another one played a Pocket Pod into the PA. It sounded fine. Current one plays a Zoom Something.3 into a clean amp or just the PA live. That sounds fine too. My theory which is mine is that if there's a PA anyway then modelling will be fine. My other theory which is also mine is if you can stretch to a Boss Katana 50 then your life will still be better.

Vox VT series are killer amps! VT20+ used to be my first amp back in the day. Loved it a lot. The variety of amps and effects was sufficient, and the volume range allowed to sound good both at home and at a big hall. Really tempted remembering the times. I have a soft spot for the MG series because of a little MG10 that I used to make a bee-line for at my lessons. It was so easy to get the right tone for what I was playing and used to sound much better than the bigger amps they had. For a Les Paul type guitar it used to sound pretty ok even when fairly loud. Just bought a MG15 for my Dad (who is a beginner - BTW I am >50) and its pretty good when played at room volumes. The sound gets worse when loud like most cheap amps. What did surprise me was how big it is physically - much bigger than the MG10 and wider and taller (just) than the Code 25. Its not as discrete as the old MG10!

As another "budget" video, I'd love to see you review some of the cheaper-end pedals (Hotone, Tone City, etc) alongside these amps. Both to look into what affordable pedals sound good and to see how versatile these affordable amps are when adding pedals into the mix. It would also be interesting to see such a review using sub-£200 guitars, maybe even sub-£150, to get a good idea of what effect pedals can have on a complete starter practice rig. Also then maybe, just for comparison, what the same pedal (and guitar) setup would sound like through higher-end amp. As knowing what cheaper pedals, if any, still work well when you start to upgrade the rest of your gear can be useful form a value perspective.

As of right now my practice setup is a Fender Champ 5F1 (Joyo Sweet Baby) with a 12AX7, 6V6, and 5Y3 tube compliment and a Celestion Eight-15 speaker (british voiced speaker). I get my drive from an Xotic SL Drive which is a Marshall Super Lead voiced pedal. When you get the amp just at the edge of breakup and engage the pedal it just starts to overdrive in such a natural and smooth way, but not farty or spitty like the champ usually is when cranked, and I think with that British voiced speaker and the Marshall in a box pedal make it sound like a tiny version of a Marshall amp on 10. It's very inspiring to play unlike most solid state/ transistor amps and even modeling rigs. The natural compression from the power tube and the sag from the tube rectifier really feel like a power amp that's working hard. A very interesting little setup that I think any tube amp lover, especially in a rock context, would love. Also the cleans are amazing, its a tube Fender amp. Then when I want the 5F1 Champ sound I just crank it without a pedal and that is awesome too, reminds me of a lot of some Zeppelin recordings. I mean, just look up how many albums were recorded with a Fender Champ on full tilt. Tiny tube amps cranked can give some awesome tones.

I'd love to see them do this. You actually need single coils since he played a Mosrite with a DM FS1. I always thought he used humbuckers since photos show his guitar had a humbucker in the neck but he had it disconnected & never used it. He never used effects, just a tuner. I'd go with a cheap Marshall and add either an overdrive, micro amp boost, or something like a Marshall Jackhammer to tweak the sound further. You don't want fuzz or distortion, you need a cranked Marshall with the gain set to low or medium. His sound is actually fairly clean, just super loud.

Anthony Sclafani good point, I've actually own a reissue of his guitar & your right the bridge is single, I had it imported from USA and it's spec is spot on from the volume & tone knobs to the tuner's, neck dot's, also I had the privilege of seeing them live about early 80's, I'm positive that J/R had some form of distortion? With so much interest shown on this topic Andertons have got to respond.... "I wanna be sedated"

Anyone looking for a cheap first or practice amp with no bells and whistles should check out the Vox P10. No reverb, but it sounds way, way better than it should at that price. It gives you all you need in a practice amp: good tone and no frills. Although it’s solid state, actually does sound like a Vox. Way better than you’d expect at that price point. (My last amp was a ‘59 Bassman, so I do know what a good amp sounds like.)

Very useful comparison. I absolutely agree with the microphone choice. The room acoustic is a serious consideration at these sort of volume levels. Very interesting because this is exactly where I was 3 months ago (except I'm 63 and not 15). I bought the Marshall MG15CFX which costs a wee bit more but adds chorus, phaser, flanger, delay and octave fx as well as the reverb on the subject combo and takes the useful optional footcontroller (PEDL-90008). There is also the MG15CF which doesn't have fx or reverb and is a wee bit cheaper than the MG15CFR. I totally agree that the clean channel gives a lovely sound. Maybe it's because the crunch, od-1 and od-2 are somehow less satisfying, as Rob says, that I did keep hankering after a modelling amp. So I now have a Marshall CODE 50 as well (bought from Anderton's - great deal- thanks). So, should I have taken the Orange instead of the MG15? A very difficult choice. I'll probably stay with what I have for the foreseeable future. My instrument is an Epiphone G-400 PRO.

After 45 years - I’ve just bought my first real amp… the first being my old, original MicroCube. And the one I went for was the Orange Crush 20RT; a week after getting it, I played a few numbers - country and blues in a village hall and I had to wind it down to no more than 30% and the guitar was barely opened up! The Orange Crush amps are completely underestimated by everyone - hells - I’d love a fender valve job… but I’ve carried memories of Orange clean tones since I was a student back in Liverpool - and now with a modern Orange… I can let the fender idea go….

I used to own the older, gold fronted, version of the Marshall 15 (I had to sell it so seeing that makes me a little wistful). Rob is right about the gain channel. An overdrive in front of the clean channel does sound better. If we are talking strictly about an amp to practice at home with, the Boss Katana Mini is probably the best since we want tone without disturbing volume.

You sold me on the orange. I play bass but just picked up my old guitar and I’m using my fender rumble 15 bass amp. Doesn’t sound bad believe it or not but I would love the orange drive sound.

I've had the Marshall, thought it was terrible. A friend has the Orange and it sounds great. I have a Katana 50 which I love, but in this test they should have used a Blackstar ID Core10 V2 (looks to be 86 pounds at Andertons) instead of the mini Katana. Not as loud as the bigger ones here for sure but it has an awesome sound and being in stereo just makes it that much better. I owned one before my Katana, and I wouldn't mind owning one again in addition.

My first bit of gear was a little Peavey amp(don’t recall the model specifically) Ibanez blue and white Gio and some dinky Behringer phaser pedal. I’ve moved up the chain since ‘99 but I still look back fondly to that little rig. I enjoyed the Orange amp.

I spent the first few years of playing guitar with a mg30dfx and a boss gt8 and got a goodish tone from it (Obviously not full valve quality but ok). Used it till it broke. Totally agree with rob that you need a pedal after the clean and its fine for newbies

It's a shame the old Roland Cube 15 isn't still around because that would have decimated this competition. I still have mine after 15 years and it is still the best practice and home use amp I have ever found. Started a love affair with Roland'Boss that has lasted my entire musical lifespan.

Kinda agree with Rob. I played through an MG series Marshall once before and it sounded okay-ish clean but its distorted channel sounded unforgivably bad. Even then when I knew jack shit about tone and amps i was just like "ohh noo... this is bad"

The Boss sounds the Best in person as a practice amp but I’d choose the orange if I’m gonna be playing with people or for a kid who wants a first amp that’s got some volume to rock out!

I was shopping for a small amp for my daughter and after trying several, I decided to go with the Fender Champion 20. It sounds great! It has amp models and built-in effects are very good, but it's not a "modeling" amp like the Fender Mustang.

My first amp was a Marshal MG15R (13 years ago). I still have it, although last year I ripped the inside out and replaced it with a Champ AA64 tube circuit. .... Awsome ..... I was surprised to find the MG has a real mini reverb tank in it. I have some bits if you need them.

I am from another universe apparently, where I was a paperboy, cleaned and washed postal vans and filled the shelves of a supermarket. So I thought of how many hours of work my amp would cost. Feels different.

in answer to Robs question, I bought the Katana mini. I had a Marshal MG30cfx, and could never grow to like the sound. Luckily, the MG got ruined in the flood from Harvey, you I cashed in some hotel rewards points and bought the Minis daddy: 2x12 100 watt Katana. my brother in law loves the Orange amps, but again, not for me. I play alone, sometimes with friends, at home

An extra few £ (£127) would get a Blackstar ID:Core 20w V2. I think it would be great in a video like this.

I agree with Rob on this one: out of those three I'd get the Katana because it sounded the best. If your budget is 100 quid you're almost certainly a beginner, and you're going to be doing a lot more practicing in your bedroom with a backing track or a click than playing with a band. If "needs to play in a beginner garage band" is a requirement, I wouldn't buy or recommend an amp at this price point, because you're just going to be disappointed. Save up a bit more and get something like a Katana 50. If I *HAD* to pick one of these for a garage band requirement (with no PA), I'd pick the Orange. Its volume and mids would give you the best chance of being heard with drums and bass. No chance with the Katana mini (unless you have a PA, in which case the Katana mini would be my choice). Probably no chance with the Marshall, either. And the Marshall sounded like crap. Absolutely terrible with the Fender, and moderately terrible with the Chapman.

My first amp was a Marshall mg10 from around 2004. A little while later I got an mg15 with the digital effects in it and that thing sounded awful. They changed something in the drive sound that made it really bad. I still have and use the older mg10 because despite the tiny speaker, lack of general volume and the now crackly knobs, it sounds legit and even cleans up with the volume knob in a really pleasing way.
