Hugh Janus reminds me of the time in the late 90's when my best friend and i were hanging out at the airport watching the jets take off ( you used to be able to do those kind of things) and we got the idea to prank the baggage claim desk by speaking with a middle eastern accent, saying we couldnt find our uncle and asking them to page Meidikus Flauping over the intercom. When we heard "my dick is flopping, please report to baggage claim" we were rolling on the floor laughing. 😂

My first gigging rig was a Peavey Studio 110 red stripe and an Epiphone Les Paul- no pedals. And the worst gig we ever played- turned out to be the best. Our drummer booked us without saying a word to any of us, we had only been together for about 6 weeks- we didn't have enough material worked out to do a show- not even close. That said, we felt we couldn't back out- we were booked, so we play- that's how it works. But- we decided not to charge the guy who was throwing the party- and to tell the crowd that we just got together and basically were just going to have an open practice session and let them listen. There was between 150 and 200 ppl there- and it became a really fun, intimate venue where the ppl got to interact with us, watch us make mistakes, watch us work stuff out- and they loved it. They would ask for a song, it would take us 2-3 tries to get it right, but then we would play it for them- and they ate it up. We let ppl get up and sing- they loved that as well. It turned out to be the most fun I have ever had at any show- and I met my wife that night. X wife now, but that's my fault really- and a much sadder, longer story I don't want to get into. We were together for 10 yrs though so- that night had a huge influence on the rest of my life.

I used a JMP-1 for years, and then a Rocktron Voodu Valve, which I purchased from Soho Soundhouse in the early noughties, then back to a JMP-1 again. Both of those were awesome pieces of kit, but the Voodu had all the effects you'd need as well, which meant it could cover everything, and we all know how good Rocktron effects are.

I'm a bass player who plays AT everything else. My bass rig history isn't embarrassing. But my "playing guitar in public" gig history kind of would be. The first band I played guitar in was a friend's band. He'd broken his arm and needed someone to cover his rhythm parts while he sang. I figured I could do that for a couple months. That guitar was an Explorer copy, by Hondo. My dad was an Electrical Engineer. He and I had re-wrapped the pickups in a few of my guitars. The Explorer had the most successful set of those. I used my friend, Pete's amp, because mine was only good for bedroom volume. His amp was a Lab Series L5, a fire breathing monster of a solid state amp. It was probably the most effective solid state guitar amp I ever heard before digital stuff existed. Second public guitar rig was infinitely more serious, nearly a decade later: MIJ Fender Strat into a Bedrock BC50 amp.

My first rig was a small Peavey Chorus combo with two 8's. First gig was with that amp. It was a tent at a fair. We played Metallica covers and a couple Slayer. The tent was packed with head banging & moshing teens. The police were caught off guard by this metal music and thought it was the start of a riot. They started pulling kids out of the tent. Our singer had to bad mouth the cops on the mic and he was pulled too. It became an instrumental show for about 1 minute until the cops pulled the plug. This killed the lights (it was night) and sound, so the crowd really went nuts. All you could hear was cops and drums. The drummer, not phased by a "temporary blown fuse" (like we had done in the basement) kept time. The cops thought this was a show of defiance and yanked him from behind, clean off the riser, to the grass! I finished my night, riding with the singer's mom down to jail to get her son. This "riot" did much for our rep. Every metal kid wanted to see us the NEXT night - when we played the fair again. We had to promise to keep it clean and our fans needed to calm down, or all of us were going to jail. So we announced on the mic to have a "good, clean fun". Then the fair lady got on the mic to warn adults that a heavy metal band was about to start playing. I can still hear her now, "ATTENTION!" "This is a HEAVY METAL BAND!" "I repeat, a HEAVY METAL BAND!" 🤣 Now nobody was leaving!
