When you do demos of these types of products, please take the time and load the same IR'S into each. The IR makes a major difference. When you do your amp demos you run them all through the same cab. Do the same with IR's.

I’ve owned and gigged with both. Both are great. NUX is what I use now. Very good clean tones and way more features. NUX XLR out is such a great feature. As others have mentioned, you will need compression and a high cut to get the NUX to sound right. Then you’re good to go.

If i remember correctly Iridium is modeling the first input of the Deluxe Reverb, that is the one without the bright cap and thus it works better with pedals, the popular choice in the other modellers is the second input/channel, that has a bright cap, tremolo and reverb so its much brighter, because they want to represent this amp with the legendary sparkly Fender cleans. Iridium was designed more as a pedal platform, so thats the choice they made.

I’ve been using the NUX live pretty much since its release. It takes some tweaking and finding the ir you like, but it’s been a great unit. My main reason for using it is it’s the only pedal platform pedal that has xlr out, fx loop, and a quarter inch out which has a switch on the pedal that allows you to defeat the ir on. So I run xlr to FOH but 1/4 inch out to an orange pedal baby and open back orange 212 cab with the ir off. This gives me consistent in ear and foh tone gig to gig and the open back stage feel I like. If I feel like using a frfr powered speaker all I have to do is flip a switch. It’s small, has all the ins and outs all these type pedals should have, and easy to use. If another better amp on a box offered the I/o options the NUX has Id get it, but every other manufacturer keeps missing this crucial detail. Change the IRs and eq and it’s great. The best, no, the most useful on a pedal board, I think yes.

I have a Nux AA and I used it on gigs and my impressions so far. 1. I uploaded Gods cab IR's to free slots and they sound much useful 2. Mr Z, Vox, JCM800 and Ubershall amps are great. 3. You have to play with IR volume. some IRs sound too loud and make amps to overcompressed and unuseful. I usually set the bar between 0 to 10 db and chop off some bass if it is too much. 4. many amps have sweet spots between 20-50 gain. Unless you want Is this love type singing Les Paul tones and sustain. 5. I combine it with a Zoom MS-100BT multistomp in SNR and Boss OD-3 in front of it and I can play a whole gig with it.

Happily using the Iridium as a recording/practice/silent stage amp, in cases where I can’t use my 60s AC30 or my 18watt Princeton clone. It will not beat the real amps, but I made IRs of my amps cabs&speakers and with some EQ I can get the Iridium pretty close.

What I found owning both a NUX mighty space and a Helix rig with an FRFR speaker, is that the NUX requires more adjustments to the IR low cut and high cut as well as slight tweaking of the EQ. Both sound excellent, the NUX just requires much more effort and a bit of knowledge on how to EQ a guitar properly to get there. The Strymon sounds better to me using those presets. But the NUX is capable of sounding just as good, it just requires more effort.

NuX AA is not typical of plug n play, set and forget pedal, u need to do some deep tweaking to get that TONE before hand, personally i'm using this since a year ago, went gig big /small venue, and by the end of the day i always got good result, even the soundmans really loves it. i need to sit down .spend an hours to tweak, search different 3rd party and eventually i loves the original one from the factory after i manipulated through EQ section from it.

Although I use a Iridium but the way Pete demonstrated the Nux was really wrong because Captain is continuously tweaking the Iridium but when it comes to Nux they weren’t even touching the EQ or the features the app have provided for Low cut and high cut. Overall the Nux is winning the Amp sim race and they are providing more features in terms of amp modelling and processing.

I agree (even owning one) that the NUX has some ways to go still for that perfect pedalboard amp tone. That said, a couple of points: 1. You can move any component of the signal chain in the app, and moving IR as the last one does clear things a lot. 2. I basically rolled mids up and bass off on all the models, the premades are bad, made at best for home play. 3. The pedal models do wonders for AA:s tone, and give a lot when you dive in. It can sound as good as the Strymon, but it will take work, I particularly loved the roll-off tone of the Uberschell as one the best crunch tones I've ever had.

Spot on and you can get them 2nd hand for £200 ish. I wanted the nux to be good, but for £175 for loads of bang avg sounds. Its like the zoom units in the 90's. first boss, (who in the main are good), and now nux are bringing out multi effects amp sims. I'm not paying £175 for £30 sounds. Why not make a pedal £50-£75 that does one, maybe 2 amp sounds well.

Im halfway thru the video but I gotta say, I think you guys are overlooking the importance of the IR's. Sure: the quality of the emulations might be different and some may be more accurate than others, but when you showed the Nux Princeton the default IR was showing a MASSIVE bump around 90-100 hz which definitely gave that 'fake' subby low-end vibe. On the strymon when you guys switched from the Fender model to the Vox you still stayed on the 'A' cab, which surely played a part on that 'forward' midrange you were talking about. Just something to consider, maybe you could scroll through the unit (as any customer would do) but then do a comparison between the units using the same Cab/IR to give a more apples to apples comparison. I think both are great units and with some tweaking the NUX offers way more versatility (I own an HX Stomp so I don't have a horse in this race :P).

I thought the same thing, the run through and comparisons in this video felt a bit rushed overall. We all know digital modellers take a bit more dialling in before any real comparisons in 'tone' can be made. Rhett Shull and Tim Pierce did a fantastic one for the UAFX dream/ruby/woodrow, it's a longer video but it shows the real potential of the pedals. On a personal level, the only thing I really care about in these demo videos is the one thing very few people actually do: test the range and dynamics of the gain knob for each amp model. Does it progress smoothly between clean, breakup, dirty? My Ampero doesn't, and it upsets me to no end. Among the cheap modellers, I find the TC Combo 65 to be by far the most pleasant to use, the gain is so smooth it really allows me to get that elusive edge of breakup and it responds beautifully to picking dynamics - but it sacrifices versatility! why can't we have both haha

To be fair to the Nu-x, it doesn’t really come with “presets”. It has amps, which if paired with the right IR and eq’ed, sounds no different to the Iridium. It comes with 10 or 12 (more or less) IR’s from Choptones. Mix and match the IR’ and most of the missing midrange is there. I have one as a cheap backup to my main rig.
@joeldowdy404

All the other amp modelers sound too thin to me including the UA ones as well. The iridium sounds more real with more low end. I like the TC Electronic Ampworx Combo Deluxe 65 Preamp Pedal as it has a gain and Mid dial. Without the mid dial that pedal would sound too thin like the others but you can dial up the mid and get it sounding more full like the iridium and its half the price if you're looking at an amp in box for a 64/65 deluxe that's more affordable plus the spring reverb on it is fantastic. In the end it's what speaker (in house or speaker cab, or in ear system) your playing it into that dictates a lot of the tone.

I owned them both. My goal was to have a backup to my HX Stomp. The Iridium sounds better, its MIDI implementation is MUCH better, and it's direct user interface is better (since on the NU-X you can't access all of the amps from the knobs and switches). But, the NU-X does enough stuff well to be worth the price. If thats all you can spend, get it. But if you can afford it, the Iridium is better in my opinion. Note, I sold them both and use the HX Stomp (main rig) and an Ampero Mini (backup device).

In a live setting I have never used more than one amp in a set so again, not a useful function. It does sound good as what I program it to do. I don't know if I would ever want to try adjusting it live. If the knobs aren't in sync' with the preset it could all go wrong. All the factory presets are crazy aggressive. I wish they had invested more time in the manual. I find myself looking a tube to figure out the basics. I wish it could run on 9V batteries. I have used Nux MG30 or MG300 for a few years now. The stock IRS are not good, they are not high and low passed correctly. Which is why there is unnatural low end and that digital noise. I use free IRS and they sound exponentially better. When I compare my pedal setup to an Iridium it's not even close for the Strymon. If you want really simple and for it to sound pretty good stock, then I totally understand why you would want to Strymon.

Owned both as a pedalboard platform for direct to FOH. Both are very usable but the Amp Academy is what is on my board as a result. The Amp Academy breaths and responds more like an amp. The Iridium just lacks and tones are "just OK". Also note, these A/B comparisons are not worth the time unless the IR's are the same in both units. No one spends the time to do that in these youtube comparisons. The factory IR's are an OK starting point but never what you end up using in a live application.

Maybe it's also a good idea to try the nux with Third Party IRs. Also, what is even the point of D1g1tal J0hn if he doesn't even get to feature on a completely digital gear video?

Does anyone know why does Amp Academy have that noise even on clean settings? Does it have anything to do with the power supply?

Would love to buy a pedal from Andertons but I just can’t…After what happened with the Tumnus Germanium I won’t even attempt to do business with them. It’s sad because I love their videos about equipment…Danish Pete is the man! But yea I’ll never be spending my time or money buying from Andertons again. Def a terrible experience.

I use it through an amp.. but I'm not really picky. What some told me is it's basically a "signal shaper". You can get a lot of interesting sounds. Works for me.

I along with a lot of other people out there have dealt with the NUX Amp Academy failing after a few months and getting no support to fix the problem. When it worked I liked it, but you’re rolling the dice and could get hung out to dry if it fails on you. Bad customer support.

The NUX is noisy, and the noise gate sucks in it. With the Iridium, they should do a Soldano SLO for the punch modal instead of the Marshall. Then you’d have clean, to mid gain to high gain. It would make the product so much better. Just do it Strymon.
