The chorus that seems to be on everything from Fair Warning on was actually an Eventide Harmonizer. Eddie would set one side slightly detuned. He most likely got the idea from being a pianist. Most pianos have three strings per key. One popular method of tuning them is to tune the center string dead on the pitch, and the outside pair slightly sharp and flat. It creates a natural chorus, and using a harmonizer in the same manner adds a certain fatness to the tone.

@@alexmurphy5289 absolutely. At one time. He has used a variety of boosts, delays, choruses etc. There are a few permanent fixtures ( like the phase 90) but not many. He's really not so different than most of us. You accumulate gear and make it work then ya upgrade, mod etc., then ya get bored and try somethin else. Hell, I have had the " perfect amp" and " perfect board" etc several times hahaha. I recently went through everything and reinvented my setup and sound entirely and dramatically for a new project.

As Eddie just passed I've been listening to a LOT of Van Halen. You guys absolutely nailed the sound on this one for the budget you were trying to adhere to. that plexi pedal is worth its weight in gold and the Tone City Tape Machine REALLY did add depth to those dive bombs. That first clip of Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love is 100% THE tone. Great Job and Rock In Paradise Eddie.

I whole-heartedly disagree. For one, there's no phaser on ATBL in the intro. Just plate reverb. slap-back tape-echo delay, and flanger on the 2 notes that have the modulated effect. And his notes don't have the same amount of gain to get that EPIC sound that the echo and reverb accentuate.

Chris, just great, I’m getting the bluesbreaker 15 tweed next week, because of the 3 stage settings, saw this peddle and knew it was perfect, now what? Your suggestion is my hope, other wise start looking for a similliar boost peddle

EMG loaded les paul into a cranked JCM800 with a boss SD-1 distortion and CH-1 chorus. That's the late-80s-early-90s Zakk rig and you kinda can't get that sound any other way. Try one of the Marshall SC20 amps for a less pricey version with more manageable volume level.

I wouldn't say you absolutely nailed it guys...but considering you were working to a budget, thats as close as you're gonna get. Certainly immediately recognisable. Also, as you say, EVH has quite a distinct technique that shapes his sound. Sterling job chaps...you've earned a beer (or three).

@KeeperOfPoops
@KeeperOfPoops 5 жыл бұрын
that's a challenge but the key to getting that violin sounding guitar in cliffs of dover is all with blending a silicon fuzz face with the Voodoo Lab Giggity, though he did record some of Cliffs of Dover on an ES335 his primary guitar is the strat, so Classic Vibe 50's into maybe a Marshall or Fender, get a silicon fuzz face, the giggity, a tone city angel wing and tape machine and also an ibanez TS Mini as he does use the TS808

I think Tone City Golden Plexi would've been perfect for this "without busting the bank" episode. It doesn't offer much tweakability, but it probably does the "full blown-up" sound better than any pedal, with all the dirt too and for such a cheap price. Other Plexi pedals often are rather "clean", they are high quality, which in my opinion a blown up amp rarely is. But the cheap Golden Plexi has that vibe of uncontrollable feedback and whatnot. You might've still made the correct choice because I'm not sure you could make the effect chain work with that pedal at all. However, I think you did fantastic job with the sound. I think all the key things are there so that you can easily recognize what you were going for. I think this is one of the better "sound like without busting the bank" you've done. I'd love you to sound like Marty Friedman/Dave Mustaine on Megadeth's Rust in Peace. That's one sound that is somehow so specific I can never put my hands exactly on it. And haven't heard others be able to either. It's like this basic Marshall tone with reverb etc, BUT there's something more to it.

I just got to this so I realize I'm coming late to the conversation and you won't ever see this, but I feel the need to go on record with how shocked I was when you started playing Panama. The show was really interesting as always and I enjoyed the build up, but I wasn't really convinced you would get a Fender amp to come anywhere near EVH's tone. Not that I'm an expert. Just something I was thinking as you went through the process. When you started Playing Panama i absolutely started listening on a different level. The tone seems perfect. i was sent straight back to the 80s. Really all done. Much impressed and really thankful I watched this.

That is the best ‘sounds like, without’ yet! Absolutely awesome. I’m going to look at buying this exact set of pedals to go through my Marshall DSL40 CR with my SG and Les Paul. I’m not aiming for an EVH sound but this collection would just add pretty much anything and everything I want.
