The chorus that seems to be on everything from Fair Warning on was actually an Eventide Harmonizer. Eddie would set one side slightly detuned. He most likely got the idea from being a pianist. Most pianos have three strings per key. One popular method of tuning them is to tune the center string dead on the pitch, and the outside pair slightly sharp and flat. It creates a natural chorus, and using a harmonizer in the same manner adds a certain fatness to the tone.

@@alexmurphy5289 absolutely. At one time. He has used a variety of boosts, delays, choruses etc. There are a few permanent fixtures ( like the phase 90) but not many. He's really not so different than most of us. You accumulate gear and make it work then ya upgrade, mod etc., then ya get bored and try somethin else. As Eddie just passed I've been listening to a LOT of Van Halen. You guys absolutely nailed the sound on this one for the budget you were trying to adhere to. that plexi pedal is worth its weight in gold and the Tone City Tape Machine REALLY did add depth to those dive bombs. I whole-heartedly disagree. For one, there's no phaser on ATBL in the intro. Just plate reverb. slap-back tape-echo delay, and flanger on the 2 notes that have the modulated effect. And his notes don't have the same amount of gain to get that EPIC sound that the echo and reverb accentuate.

He taught me a lot. But I never tried to sound like him by rig or playing, although I could handle the first VH album pretty well. Now I will find one of these pedals and have it along with a couple others so I can invoke his memory. Hopefully without crying 😭 in public.

I've come as close as I possibly can on my tight budget. The gear I have is a Silvertone stratocaster that I modified with parts from a JS100 from the early 2000's, including the ibanez AH2 bridge pickup and licensed floyd trem system, which cost me a total of $450 CAD (all currency is canadian) for both guitars used. As well, I have a 120 watt (VT80+) vox valvetronix that I set up on the 5150 preset with it dimed to 10 on all but the gain, which I pulled back to about 8 or 8.5. For a phaser I picked up an MXR phase 90 for $110 brand new, the flanger I use is a JOYO classic flange which cost me $46 new, I have a JOYO analog delay for that 1 repeat split second snap, which was $55 new, and I have a Behringer 7 band EQ that I picked up for $50 new. All said and done I spent $711 Canadian, which is peanuts in terms of £. 408£ all said and done. Not saying the guitar is great, it needs some work and a better trem system. But a floyd rose original is another $300 CAD, so you're still under 600£. I wish I had a proper recording setup to do more with music and such, but that's my next project after the house.

that's a challenge but the key to getting that violin sounding guitar in cliffs of dover is all with blending a silicon fuzz face with the Voodoo Lab Giggity, though he did record some of Cliffs of Dover on an ES335 his primary guitar is the strat, so Classic Vibe 50's into maybe a Marshall or Fender, get a silicon fuzz face, the giggity, a tone city angel wing and tape machine and also an ibanez TS Mini as he does use the TS808

@@9unslin9er if he wants to play his catalog, he will need more than one though to be fair. He didnt always use a floyd rose but its definately an essential tool to " play like steve stevens". I would guess that he said this during his time with vince Neil band and probably meant in that particular situation. It would have never worked for Billy Idol or Atomic Playboys. He bought the gretsch because he needed that sound, same with the strats, hamers, les pauls etc. There really is no such thing as " the one guitar" for every sound, unless your sound and style are extremely limited, which is definately not the case with steve stevens

I think Tone City Golden Plexi would've been perfect for this "without busting the bank" episode. It doesn't offer much tweakability, but it probably does the "full blown-up" sound better than any pedal, with all the dirt too and for such a cheap price. Other Plexi pedals often are rather "clean", they are high quality, which in my opinion a blown up amp rarely is. But the cheap Golden Plexi has that vibe of uncontrollable feedback and whatnot. You might've still made the correct choice because I'm not sure you could make the effect chain work with that pedal at all. However, I think you did fantastic job with the sound. I think all the key things are there so that you can easily recognize what you were going for. I think this is one of the better "sound like without busting the bank" you've done. I'd love you to sound like Marty Friedman/Dave Mustaine on Megadeth's Rust in Peace. That's one sound that is somehow so specific I can never put my hands exactly on it. And haven't heard others be able to either. It's like this basic Marshall tone with reverb etc, BUT there's something more to it.

@@potentialbouldercrusher9159 yup exactly right. The first time I switched from 9s to 13s on mine I learned a few things. First holy crap that tone. So meaty and chunky. Just so much metal over the pickups. Second, put extra springs in the trem system. Without the extra reinforcement you can actually see the bridge lifting up. And last, watch your neck. The first strat I did this to was an old squire and I noticed very quickly I was having to adjust the truss rod to keep everything straight. So freaking worth it though
@SavageDarkness

This is not as hard as people seem to make it. While Stevie used several amps over the years, a good shortcut is a tube screamer or clone pushing a fender vibroverb or similar into grit. Then a Marshall clean biting through it with it's clean using alnico 2x12s. Size .12-.13 strings help with raking. Dial the TS with level all the way up and drive almost all the way down. Some Mesas can get close to this tone without the extra marshall. DO NOT use TEXAS SPECIALS with large strings, it will just sound muddy. Low output pickups are what is called for. The Texas specials were designed to help people sound like SRV without the large strings, But SRV really did not like them that much as he never played live with them. You can also use the bassbreaker to sound like SRV, Push the amp a bit the same way with a TS like pedal with level up and drive down. You WILL get close enough without ten amps. Practice your raking. Practice and Enjoy!
