Bea & Matt FYI - For his live sound, Billy Gibbons' 1959 Les Paul Standard "Pearly Gates" is the reference sound for all of his other guitars. On an episode of Rig Rundown, Gibbons' tech explains the process. He captures a G chord from Pearly Gates on a spectrum analyzer. He then captures the same chord from a his other guitars. One by one he adjust a multi-band EQ until the other guitar's curve matches Pearly Gates (as much as close as possible). He saves the EQ setting for recall when that instrument is used in the set. It sounds very scientific, and more than a little homogenized, but it's a fairly straight forward process.The plus side is a consistent sound across the board - even the TV-Jones equipped instruments are made to sound close to the PAFs in Pearly Gates. I think it really works for Gibbons live show due to the unorthodox style of instruments he plays live (fur covered, small-boxy shapes, etc.). I imagine some of them might not sound that great on their own.

Actually...for the last few tours he has played a Custom SG. I saw him in last year in DC and he played this the whole show until the encore. www.gibson.com/Billy-Gibbons-Ultimate-SG.aspx

Mike Adams: I caught them late last year too. One of the loudest shows I've ever seen - and it was outside! He played several guitars on that night.

Also, Billy said many times that the sound of a cranked Marshall 1959 slp really had defined their live sound. Just listen to their early live recordings. Billy smokes the hell out of the super lead!

I got lucky and saw them last year in a club in DC. Insanely loud. I always wear ear protection to shows and it was still too loud.
@Civilian2.07 жыл бұрын
I saw this too, I think Billy Gibbons plays alot of different guitars nowadays - The Bolins,. Gretschs and Telecasters, purely for the looks, weight and playability. They all sound pretty similar, also I didn't his sound was so fuzzy, just lots of bass and no treble.

@Dooms98-p2k3 жыл бұрын
You underestimate the versatility of a cranked Marshall. You can really get a variety of tones just by changing the dynamics of your picking or messing with your volume and tone knobs
@ace64582 жыл бұрын
It’s almost like different types of Marshall’s, guitars, pickups, wood, fingers, string gauge, equipment used to record the song, ect. All effect the tone?!?!? Woah crazy.

@thomthomhojberg7 жыл бұрын
Then go do that. I like the series :)
@error84187 жыл бұрын
Well, i really like this series - don't get me wrong. But Bonamassa is one of those guitarists who could play literally anything and still sound like themselves; they don't rely on gear that much. In addition to that his current rig isn't very spectacular, so I guess it would be quite a short video.
@BerriesAllen7 жыл бұрын
+error dude, who cares. I'd still love to see them try and sound like JB. Also, to say he's not reliant of gear is true to a degree. With that said, I don't think you'll find Joe without a tweed fender, and a les Paul at any of his gigs. Still, his tone can be somewhat difficult to get. As for this show being redundant because of rig rundowns; so what. The show is very enjoyable to watch. It's more about seeing how close they can get with a limited budget, and amps/pedals/guitars that those who's tones they are trying to match wouldn't use because they can afford whatever they want to use. It's a great series, and you obviously watch it.
Welcome back guys!!! Can you do some of the more requested onses which are Johnny Marr - The Smiths Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'brien and Thom Yorke - Radiohead Buckethead Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil - Soundgarten Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman/Gary Holt - Slayer Steve Vai Paul Gilbert - Mr Big/Racer X Graham Coxon - Blur Joe Bonamassa John Petrucci - Dream Theater Eric Johnson Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman/Chris Broderick/Kiko Loureiro - Megadeth Synyster Gates and Zacky Venegance - A7X Brian Setzer - Stray Cats Metallica (BY busting the bank) and a lesser known guitarist who i like which i want them to see do because his solos are immense and fun for the john petrucci lovers (Jeff Williams)

You can't do a Zappa , there is no way in hell.. His tone can change on a dime.. Same really with Buckethead..
@sinistergrey37 жыл бұрын
Glad you guys are back! love the series....However just to give a little constructive criticism on this particular episode, the tone was way way off and didn't sound very good.The issue hands down is the guitar and pick ups (the BlackStar HT series is a pretty good amp but still would've been better to go with a marshall or Laney), All of the zz top records are recorded with the 59 pearly gates les paul....which are LOW OUTPUT original PAF pickups. So when trying to emulate that tone with a chinese made guitar with HIGH OUTPUT pickups, it just doesn't work. Mind you, It's understandable why you thought he used higher output pickups (due to the 'live' show guitar choices, he doesn't take the pearly gates out on tour) but the big point with that is he runs ALL of those 'other' (i.e. not pearly gates) guitars through an EQ set up that makes them as close in tone as possible to the 59' pearly gates (which is why no matter what guitar he's playing sounds very close in tone to the previous guitar used). This would be awesome to see as a "by busting the bank" edition as you could use an R8 or R9 custom shop re-issue and match them with a marshall or Laney and get a whole lot closer. That's just my opinion though, and hopefully some of this info will find it's way to you and help in the future. Good attempt regardless and I'm so glad that NAMM is over and we can get more episodes of this series. Love the work and passion you guys put into this show and can't wait till next time. Keep rocking!

Rabea Massaad With all the love I can hope to transmit via KZbin comment, I want you to know that the Blackstar HT amps are not valve amps: the “overdrive channel” is a built-in distortion pedal, and the phase inverter (which is critical to the sound of a cranked valve amp) is solid state. That hybrid architecture (the “H” in “HT”) greatly complicates using pedals, as you have discovered.

I love this series and I love the ZZ Top sound, but I think this time you did not get it right. Way too much fuzz, La Grange never sounded like this. When people think about ZZ Top, they think the early records, maybe even Eliminator but not this new La Futura thing. Never mind! Give it another try. With or without busting the bank.
@jalanhart7 жыл бұрын
TheChinovnik "Maybe even Eliminator"?? The only songs I think really think about other than off the Eliminator album is La Grange, Gotsta Get Paid, Just Got Paid, and maybe Can't Stop Rocking. In my opinion, Eliminator really defines ZZ Top in Classic Rock. Gimme All Your Loving, Sharp Dressed Man, Got me Under Pressure, I Got the Six, If I Could Only Flag Her Down, and Bad Girl aren't even all the ones off Eliminator and thise are songs that instantly come to mind. I don't think I even know what album La Grange is on off the top of my head.
@JoeSlay617 жыл бұрын
I agree that Eliminator is a great album. Eliminator basically marked the beginning of the video driven phase of their career. Love the music from that era as well. I think Eliminator defines them in 80's music. The stuff before was excellent and is the real classic stuff to a lot of ZZ Top fans. I think the guys did a good job of finding the sound.

I have used chandler tube driver, which actually has a example of how to dial in the tone in the original instructions manual. lately I have used a MRX distortion with a tone city king of Blues which creates a narrow but different group of his sounds. The word derives from antiquity and is a tribute to the ancient god, Pan. One of the many gods in the mythology of ancient Greece: Pan was the god of shepherds and of woods and pastures. The Greeks believed that he often wandered peacefully through the woods, playing a pipe, but when accidentally awakened from his noontime nap he could give a great shout that would cause flocks to stampede. From this aspect of Pan's nature Greek authors derived the word panikon, “sudden fear,” the ultimate source of the English word: "panic".

Great to see that you guys are back!!! I couldn't think of a better band to return with. ZZ Top are awesome. One thing I will have to say though is this, that fuzz tone was a little too fuzzy in places for some of the excerpts. Other than that, great job dudes! 🙂🤘🏻✌🏻

Great Sound , I thought Gibbons used a simpler set up , glad you broke it down . I have a Les Paul Custom and I love how it sounds . I will look into stacking pedals like you mentioned .

I think you guys got a "fail" on this video. Billy used a 1959 Les Paul on some in their early albums. He also has a "signature" pick up created by Seymour Duncan (pearly gates) you could have used a Epiphone or low budget Gibson special. Amp wise is none other than a Marshall Super Lead... so you could have again used a DSL40...

oh damn fuck!! awesome video as usual!!! you really should do the busting the bank , because you're nearly close to the sound, for a budget. SO you got my encouragements to make the ZZ top By busting the bank and also the bass! Greetings from belgium!!!

Happy New Year! So glad you attempted this one. I did request it! Thanks! Got to be honest though, this mainly sounds pretty thin. I think his tone is considerably fuller and bassier than this. The Mud Honey was good, but some of the others... hmm. The playing was good though. Maybe to be revisited with an unlimited bank?

Pearly Gates was used exclusively with some Fenders on all the old records and makes appearances on all new recordings after. Also uses Fender Tweed amps as well as Marshalls in the studio. overtone5 has a good explanation on his live sound now using an EQ to get a homogeneous sound with all the guitars based on Pearly!

At this point, when Matt and Rabea say "Great guitar for the money." that means, "Get a really good amp to even up your tone." XD
