Before Slash had his signature pickup he used Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro APH-1 pickups. His signature models are a slightly hotter bigger sounding version of this. Every guitar he records or performs with was fitted with these before his signature set came out.
@cgavin1
@cgavin1 8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely nailed this one. What this really brought home to me though was that if you have half decent gear, a good quality amp especially, you can sound like whatever you want with the use of fx and pedals. I'd love to see a video from you guys where you use a tele and make it sound like a Les Paul etc. Just to make people realize you don't need this boutique humbucker or that vintage tweed etc.

they did it but i think they should re do it because the effect they used for lonely boy was way of by my standards, they used an EHX Pitchfork as there wasn't any Digitech Whammies left in stock even though i recall there was 4 Whammy DT's at the warehouse during that time it was uploaded and from seeing research Dan used a Boss PS5 but i don't think they make them anymore so the PS6 would've been better

About you guys claiming that Slash used the stock pickups of his Les Paul before getting his own signature set. WRONG, the Kris Derrig made Les Paul Copy he played on "Appetite" was fitted with Seymour Duncan AlNiCo pro humbuckers that Slash liked the sound so much of that when the band started their "Appetite" tour, he bought several Les Pauls and had the stock pickups replaced by Seymour Duncan AlNiCo pro units so he could at least have a similar sound to the Derrig Les Paul which he was reluctant to take out on tour.

I've been in love with Slash and his tone since before I picked up the guitar, which coincidently is why I decided to play guitar, and my brother bought me a regular Epiphone Les Paul traditional and then a few years later I bought the Marshall MG100HCFX head and I got some pretty good Slash tones out of it.

Only one change I wouldve made. Instead of that epi lp I wouldve gone with the Gibson 50s tribute lp. Killer guitar for 900 bucks, and the goldtop has a dark back like slashs.

I so want a DSL! Dont know why as I have a 100W TSL and love it but, this little amp is a beast! The TSL is basically useless at home volumes but thanks to an attenuation unit I can actually enjoy it now. Same with my Peavy 100w valveking absolutely useless at home without the attenuator.

Great "Sound like", this. You guys normally do a pretty good job but you nailed it this time. I wish I'd had KZbin and series like "Sound like" when I was first learning guitar back in the 90's. Guitar Techniques and Total Guitar were pretty good with the CD included but didn't manage to communicate the importance of tone and the different elements of your setup half as well as videos like these do. There's so much great content out there and this knowledge is so much more accessible the kids learning these days have no excuse for being purveyors of crap tone.

That Artist series/Plimsoul combination sounds amazing, remember Chappers and The Captain using it in the amp demo. Might have to pick one up to use with my ME80 for my bedroom playing.

There are quite a few ISO tracks on KZbin. Very easy to isolate Izzy's tone and Slash's. Having said that, you got a great authentic sound here. Nice job!

I'm a huge slash fan, and while I think you guys nailed the tone, the pedal options seemed silly. Slash has 3-5 crybaby pedals across the stage at any show, so there's always one nearby. that's how much he uses one. It's his absolute go-to. he likes it because it's expressive. The AFD was also not a gibson, it was a copy of a les paul with non-gibson pickups that are most similar to his signature a2p's. While not practical for this video, I bought a cheap epi LP, installed the slash pickups, and bought a blackstar ht5. that gets the basic tone, but the slash sig. wah pedal really gets it going. I had a much smaller budget though

The pickup booster for me was what made the Slash side work, would never have thought to consider it, but yeah, flipping beastly! And that Tone City chorus was just ridiculous... Gotta admit, can't think of an idea of who to suggest for a Sounds Like, Rolling Stones would be a nice one, find a way to replicate the Gimme Shelter tone would be sweet as.

He says before slash had signature pickups he would've used stock gibson guitars and pickups ... But when slash recorded AFD he used the kris derrig gibson replica and what this guy doesn't know is the derrig came with Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 pro zebras in it already, which then became his signature pickup... So no, he wouldn't have used stock gibson guitars and pickups back then, maybe after the record blew up and Gibson got on board but this video is about achieving the sound on the record, which they weren't around for
