this was great! reflecting on what Pete said about law of diminishing returns, it`s a great point! .I'd love to see an episode where you add more and more expensive components to the entire rig (instrument, amp, pedals, cables, etc.) and compare the quality of the sound by price range. I truly enjoy watching your videos, keep it up!

That is true, however at some point when the gear is VERY expensive (and the rig of course is put together well and is played by a great player) it does sounds so so so good. I've nearly bought a Bugera in the past and I was really rooting for it, but the Katana actually sounded much better through the basic audio set-up at work - just a better-balanced tone. I'll listen again at home and I'm pretty confident the result will be different. I guess that's why using a variety of speakers is so important when mixing!

i started with a katana 100, then got the Bugera V22 as my first tube/valve amp, and now I run them both in a budget stereo rig with a PodGo as the preamp with my analog pedalboard in its loop. It's a pretty sweet setup tbh
@stoneysdead689
@stoneysdead689 2 жыл бұрын
I have an old Peavey Studio Pro 112 transtube and a Blackstar Club 40 with a cream back 75 in it- I've been thinking about setting up a similar rig. I wasn't sure though about combining a solid state and a tube amp into one rig- how it would sound I mean- the two amps react so differently to effects it's unreal. The Blackstar handles them way, way better than the old Peavey. It has a parallel loop while the Peavey has a series loop. The main difference being if you put a drive into the loop of the peavey, you lose almost all the distortion it has to offer because it's no longer overdriving your preamp- it's now between the preamp and the power amp so- you lose a bunch of grit, and it sounds funky. The Blackstar however doesn't work that way- you put a drive in the loop, and it sounds better, you don't lose any distortion. I assume it's overdriving the power amp instead of the preamp- but really, I don't understand how it works so- I can't say. I know guitars really well but, not amps.
@dongonzulman6478
@dongonzulman6478 2 жыл бұрын
@@stoneysdead689 Hard to say without actually testing things, but the way mine works is all my analog pedals are running into essentially the front of the preamp (you can move where the loop is in the podgo), and both amps are only acting as power amps (podgo outputs to the return on the amps)
@stoneysdead689
@stoneysdead689 2 жыл бұрын
@@dongonzulman6478 Ah- I see, thanks- sounds like a cool setup. I was seconds from pulling the trigger on an MX5 Headrush modeler a few weeks ago- planning on running it much the same way. But I changed my mind at the bitter end and upgraded the speaker in my tube amp, bought a few pedals I had been wanting- it's hard to change at 53. But knowing I could run my analogue board in the loop of my modeler makes it much more tempting- I hadn't really considered that. I've spent years putting that board together- I can't imagine playing without it.

I've got both amps and I'm gigging with a Katana head 100 mkII. The Bugera sounds better here because it is plug and play. The Katana needs some tuning, especially the global eq and the speakers from the combos need some breaking in. If you set it up, the Katana can sound quite a lot better then the Bugera and it is much more versatile as well as being lighter. Without setup, like you did here, the Bugera wins.

Pete, you are the best. I really enjoy seeing someone who makes the internet suck a bit less!!! I am a fan my guy! Long live Andertons, too. CAP10 is a legend too. Now just get Rabea to stop by more! Just a wish…

The Bugera imo is a lot like the Blackstar tube amps- they're good amps, but you need to change the speaker in them. The main difference being- the Bugera is cheap enough that you can do that and still have a reasonable amount of money in the amp- the Blackstar isn't. I managed to get the Blackstar Club 40 MKII I have used for 350 bucks- at that price you can do it and be ok but- you can buy the Bugera brand new and still upgrade and be at about the same price point. Plus- Bugera amps are designed to bias themselves to whatever tube set you install. So, the only limitation is the socket- and you can buy socket adapters. May not sound like much but when tubes cost what they do now and are as difficult to find at times- this could be a very handy feature. The only thing that concerns me is the fire risk I keep hearing about. I'm hearing it online so; you have to take it with a grain of salt but- I've heard 2-3 stories about these amps catching on fire- and even one story about someone dying as a result. It's probably not true because if it were, I would think there would be a recall, or you would at least hear vendors talking about it or something. I've only heard anecdotes so- probably made up.

Thanks for the fun video. I found the Kat’s built-in pedal sounded better than the external Dirt pedals I tried.

I would go with the ToneX pedal, a 50 watt katana with foot controller and boss expression pedal for wah etc and a FGN T style J Standard

The Sire is all together, a different sound. Larry Carlton helped voice those pick ups and he chose a tone that is more complimentary to his style. And while I think Sire guitars are great (Especially the 335's), The Squier Classic Vibe Tele did sound better on this rig.

Buy a used one brother- you can get them fairly cheap- as cheap as any other budget guitar out there. I've seen them for 250-300 on eBay pretty regularly. There's a Blonde 50s CV tele right now on eBay for 299. I know how you feel man, I'm on a tight budget myself. The key is to learn to be patient- don't feel like the second you get enough money for say an Affinity or Bullet that you have to go buy a guitar. Wait- keep saving- it's just a little more and you'll have the CV. Good luck man, I sincerely hope you get one.

I'd be interested to have Pete's option on my 1974telecaster which is slightly modified, with a brass mighty mite six saddle bridge ( ala Keef Richards) and a overwound Kent Armstrong bridge pickup.

Gotta appreciate the effort. It must take some time to set up all of those mics and stuff even if they're most likely pre-wired and ready to go offscreen somewhere.

Another great video. What about a Boss IR-200 amp and cab simulator (or similar IR solution)? You guys reviewed it - tiny footprint, tons of options for changing tones quickly. Of course, I know pretty much nothing about live gig rigs. Would that be considered a rookie "cheat" move by The Captain and Danish Pete? Haha - probably, but seems like an IR pedal would be the fastest and easiest pick and even costs a bit less than the amps. Just curious if it's a viable choice or if I'm missing something...
