@@pontramyou rarely use a 20 year old groovebox? What information exactly do you think that’s relaying?
@pontram9 ай бұрын
@@svenmify First I have to note that IMHO the age of such instruments does not correlate negatively with their versatility. If you however allege that differently for gear of the same age or older than DX200, you will stand alone beside a huge number of avid users of said gear. And, though this new Yamaha GB has a lot of functionality, I realize that it has less than some 20- or 30-year-old groovebox from Roland, Novation, Akai, Quasimidi and Yamaha themselves. What I meant with my comment is, that in terms of usability the DX200 is highly questionable (though on paper great), not shedding a very good light on Yamaha's ability to create versatile machines of that genre. So "Yamaha back in the GB game" is to be taken with a shovel full of salt 😏.
@svenmify9 ай бұрын
@@pontram I would say that in terms of sound quality, age does indeed not correlate to quality (except when it comes to digital emulation of analog gear, but in this case it’s FM anyway). The point I was making is that these devices are so far removed from each other in time that it’s most likely entirely different people that made it, they’re not necessarily comparable. Sure they might share some of the same DNA, but not finding much use for one 20 year old device from a company doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t like their new one. Doesn’t mean you will either, I just don’t think it’s an obvious conclusion (which you implied it being by saying “so” and then nothing). Couldn’t explain this with less words, sorry :)

If Roland can do it with the TR-9 and TR-8 which are tiny by comparison I see no reason why Yamaha can't deliver an update making separate audio channels over USB possible. I ordered the SeqTrak to go with my SixTrak but the consolidated audio out is a huge bone to pick indeed. And I may have to wait until I get it in my hands to find out if it can drive other instruments since there aren't any videos showing that it can. Nor do I understand if the internal synth and the DX can be edited in some way, if not inside the box, then at least via the software.. otoh it's not nearly as abstruse as the OP-6 - and it has at least rudimentary MIDI and audio implementation, unlike the OP-6 where you have to buy dongles to get those functions.

Cool little machine, but I get confused about connectivity. If I want to play one of these live standalone without a laptop. Is the headphone output the only way to connect to a mixer? and if I connect a midi controller to the USB port, you'd have to rely on battery power?
@nym0539 ай бұрын
Aarh yeah, you'd need a mixer. You can get some pretty small ones for not so much that are still portable. And then a cable that goes from 1 small stereo jack to 2 mono ones, unless the mixer supports small stereo input. But, I don't think that it would make any sense with headphones anyways actually, since the unit physically would need to have a dedicated output, that you could que tracks to. And this unit doesn't. But sure, if you'd want to have 2× Seqtrak for a dj-ing kind of thing, then a mixer with the function to only send the signal of one of the units at a time to the headphones out on the mixer, while also being muted from the mains would be ideal. Maybe if the mixer has an alternative output, or if you'd use a pair of auxes as the mains out, and using the sends to fade in and out. But then the mixer would probably not be one of the smallest. I guess you could get a USB adapter with multiple ins. Not sure if the unit could handle that though. Else you'd have to go with the regular small midi input. Might be some adapters for that. But yeah, for live usage it seems you'd need several solutions to get the most out of it. But it is a quite affordable unit that can do quite a lot.

Looks very intersesting. As i'm a hardware noob, i gotta ask: How would one go about integrating it into the workflow with your conventional DAW? I imagine myself sitting on the couch with the SEQTRACK and out-lining the basic elements of a track, maybe even fine tuning some elements and so on. As i'm a "Bedroom"-Producer that has worked almost exclusively in a DAW, i want to take that "sketch" or concept of the track i made into the DAW to edit, arrange and fully finish it. How would a beginner like me do that? Would you export loops? Stems of individual elements or entire patterns? Also, another question: I can record sounds form my other hardware piece, a synth, into the SEQTRACK, i know that much. Let's say i want to make a basic Tech House track. Would i record a single note from the bass patch i designed on my Synth into the SEQTRACK, then sample it there and build a Bassline from it and program a bassline? Does that work? Because i'm absolutely trerrible at actually playing keyboard, so recording the entire bass line isn't really an option. Also, would there be a way to create a sidechain-compression like / ducking effect "in the box"? A lot of what i make heavily relies on that. Probably with the motion recording, i'd guess? What i find very interesting about devices like this is that i feel like it brings back some of the 80s / 90s style production. Back in the day when everything was hardware based, people couldn't / didn't fine-tune and surgically clean up every single piece of audio in a track. And i feel like that gives a whole different vibe and soundscape.

I’m sure there are newer (and cheaper) alternatives. Working in the garden, it struck me: Why not make a MIDI-channel-splitter-rerouter-for-the Yamaha-Seqtrack. Small box, no power needed, like the Anatek Pocket Pedals. I would buy one😎 Any takers? I also have a slight problem reading the grey text on the black buttons, (I like Black) when they're not lit up. Just thought this was good to know, before pulling the trigger on this one, Otherwise I'm, so far, very happy with my unit.

I see tiny text. Which color model is easier to see the text stamped on it?

Amazing. A bigger version with a fill width display please (a bit like Ableton Push 3)…

Time to trade in the EP-133.

I'm glad I cancled my KO2 order when all the problems came out. Atleast with Yamaha you can expect a somewhat reliable quality

Still missing sample editing here on this device vs ep-133

“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” and all that - clicky keys from the OP1, sequencer/screenless pages from the OPZ… Looks really good though, love the minimal design and the two colour ways. Agree with a comment earlier that it’s a shame the text strip in the centre isn’t a screen - feels a bit too ‘fixed’ and un-updateable like this. Probably a lot easier to remember than the OPZ though! Wonder if TE will respond with a Field Z….?!

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I'm not a fan of the trend that the OP-1 started. I don't want my musical devices to be fragile pieces of plastic even if there are features exploding out of the minijacks. Oh and the minijacks...I hate them! Give me real MIDI ports! It's like everybody wants to be Apple, but people don't want to use adapters and dongles to interface with the rest of their gear. It's just yet another part that can get lost or broken. I'd gladly take a slightly larger, more rugged design that has all of the appropriate (full-sized) ports. I will at least give them credit for not making me sell my first born to afford one of these the way Teenage Engineering does.

@@unknownmusicman Yeah I know what you mean. To be fair to TE I’m not sure they’re massively concerned about their gear fitting in with other music gear - I think they just make what they wanna make. Some people like it, some don’t. I have the original OP1 and OPZ which I love more for the enjoyment of using them than the sound they output! This new Yamaha looks like it’s trying to do both - decent sound plus some beautiful product design. Definitely won’t be for everyone but can see it finding an audience - like they mention in this video, for people to write sketches and ideas to flesh out later. And maybe that’s enough.

I just bought the T.E. K.O. And haven’t opened it yet. Looks like it may never get opened and T.E., after their latest K.O. debacle, may be taking its Apple-like ways back to the late 1990s when Apple was in the verge of non-existence. But I can only hope. The SeqTrack should come in DX7 brown.
