Hi KZbin community, I have a question for you. I am a ‘non-musical’ person, but I have a 16yo son who is musical. He plays Tenor & French horns in multiple bands & Orchestra’s (up to grade 7 so far). He has no prior experience with electronic music. These Aira Compact family of units look very capable, fun, and don’t break the bank, and I think might be of interest to my son. If you were to buy just one of these units as an introduction to electronic music creation (just to see if he takes to it or not), which of these units (P6, T8, S1, J6, E4) would you consider the best starter? Or, would you recommend something totally different (but in the same sort of price range)?
@OlegAryutkin2 ай бұрын
These are toys for people who already got a lot of gear. Get a digital audio workstation software (“DAW”), and maybe a simple controller keyboard. If he’s got a PC, get a USB audio interface, something inexpensive, like $100. If he’s got a Mac, no need for an interface. A simple software on computer is 10000x more powerful than this cute toy. Ableton seems to be the gold standard for electronic music You can get bundles with audio interface and ableton and some keyboard controllers online
@TheLDunn12 ай бұрын
@@OlegAryutkin many thanks for your response. You have answered the question that I was wondering - about using a PC + software to achieve a similar goal. Thank you. These Aira compact units do look like ‘fun’ though, even to a non-musical person. I did have a very subtle conversation with my son, and showed him part of this video. I’m surprised, but he said that he wasn’t that interested in creating his own music, he likes being given the sheet music and following those ‘instructions’ to play an ‘analogue’ instrument. I was really surprised at this response, as he spends a lot of time on computers, so figured creating music digitally would appeal, but evidently not. So, I probably won’t be buying an Aria Compact unit now.
@OlegAryutkin2 ай бұрын
@@TheLDunn1 he might come to this naturally. or not. Millions of musicians (professionals and hobbyists) are not interested in creating music on computer, or writing music at all. Many just want to experience connection with their instrument and no other "distractions". Usually these are the ones who play the best :)
@TheLDunn12 ай бұрын
@@OlegAryutkin thank you. Yes, this seems to describe my son well, just enjoys playing his instruments in bands. As a non-musical person, I’ve struggled to understand this, I’m an engineer by profession, and a keen photographer, I enjoy the creativity side of things, as maybe incorrectly, assumed my son would like the musical creative side. I don’t think my son will ever be ‘one of the better players’ though, he doesn’t practice enough, just seems to really like playing in his various groups.
@T_E_music_playlists2 күн бұрын
The J6 Chord synth would probably be the easiest for your kid to play with, but the S1 tweak synth might be a little more fun to experiment with shaping synth sound waves. The J8 is a drum machine with a bass synth wich would be good making music with more rhythmic structure. The P6 Sampler might be the most complicated of all but there is limitless possibilities because you can make music out of anything. Any sound can be used as an instrument. Good for using your imagination creatively.The E4 voice tweak is more like a toy. Fun but it seems more like a toy for people that can't really sing. Though it might be useful as an effects unit for running other music instruments through to come up with interesting or unusual sounds. Even though others have recommended getting your kid a computer music setup I think if I was a kid and was given the choice I think the Roland Aira Compact series instruments would look like a lot more fun to get my hands on and immediately play with instead of a boring much more complicated looking computer. Kids just want to have fun. Computers are enjoyable to use when you're older and more mature. Just my opinion. It's your choice to do what you think is best for him. I think it's great that you want to get him into making music at young age. Good luck.

@@paulc7798 Sadly Roland are not the only ones recycling to milk dry their customers. Each time a 'new' synth is produced I think it's nothing new; actually worse in many cases. They all sound the same to me, but more clinical, almost VST like, and not nearly as warm as the originals. Another problem is investing any finance into gear when music pays nothing unless huge tours and merchandise; Spotify and similar companies are a joke where 'payment' is concerned. The internet has destroyed the music 'business'.

@@alanredversangel That drum loop he demonstrated - Theres probably not enough sample time left for a variation or couple of fills - you ok with that?

@@annother3350 If I wasn't I'd buy something better. These Aira things are great for the money. I've taken my T-8 on holiday, the kids have played with it while waiting for things, I've recorded with it. The limitations don't really affect how fun or useful they are for me to be honest.

It's 5.9 sec. per sample, not total. With 6 pads x 8 banks that's over 4 1/2 minutes of total sample time at full resolution.
