Idk I think as far as just learning the basics and keeping good physical condition would go a long way. But you're right, you're not going become a black belt alone. But they do have things like double end bags that help you train timing and reflexes. With enough hardwork you could at least become a competent brawler.

Thank you sir! I wonder how many martial artists ever cared to consider the benefits of learning things like juggling, writing with the non dominant hand, archery, driving stick shift, things of that nature. Challenging ourselves is what this whole thing has always been about. Goes back to your one video there when you said ABC always be conditioning. Even in mundane tasks we can choose to try it with our non dominant hand or choose activities that make us synchronize our hands together. But how many martial artists would look at something like juggling and think oh what a phony! Or look at a ballerina and say that's not martial arts! In reality martial arts is a colorful way of war, so if it translates, I say train it!

I practice with juggling flower sticks, and it greatly helps with my coordination. It's using two sticks to control another stick, usually tossing it between the two or spinning it, using one or both sticks. I've come to learn after months of practicing these juggling sticks, that the discipline and focus needed to practice was enough to get anything done. So I stared involving work out routines with my practice sessions, and it greatly improved my confidence in solo training

This video is very useful. Ando Mierzwa makes a great point: “martial arts is about relationships.” In order to fully understand a martial art or kinesthetic culture, one must orient themselves within a participatory context that assumes the presence of others outside the self. Aside from the need to be taught technique along with other implicit components of a holistic martial art by a trained professional, social participation with teacher and other students is crucial to the legitimate embodiment of an art. This is because most of the technique involved with learning a martial art considers somatic movement in relation to another body in the context of self-defense, where one body must be quicker and stronger than the other to avoid defeat and achieve success. Quicker and stronger could take many forms, depending on the style of the art and the character of the practitioner. However, technique is not the sole component of mastering a martial art. Savvy and cunning are also requirements, which are skills that develop through sensory experience with another body. Technique is something that be learned through observation, but skill is something that is learned through experience and bodily sensations. Both of these things rely on learning within a social context, one where body to body communication can take place. Anthropologist Jaida Kim Samudra in his research on White Crane Silat asserts that the “new social identities” that form from engaging with a kinesthetic culture rely on “shared bodily practices” (Samudra 2008: 665). His work emphasizes what he calls thick participation or what has been called legitimate peripheral participation which is described as cultural knowledge recorded in the amateur body and dependent on shared social experience (2008: 667). The reason why learning must be done in social setting has much less to do with the communication and discourse that may take place and more to do with the kinesthetic practice of participatory experiential and sensory knowledge that takes place through body to body interaction. Anthropologist Lauren Miller Griffith in her research on Capoeira upholds that one must “become a full participant in the phenomenon” to learn, understand, and embody the art (Griffith 2013: 1). In her report, she details the importance of apprenticeship pilgrimage to a center or ‘birthplace’ of kinesthetic culture to further legitimize a practitioner’s role in their embodiment of a martial art. This pilgrimage is important when coupled with legitimate peripheral participation in more authentic spaces because it leads to a spiritual, physical, and social transformation (2013: 2). It is in these authentic spaces that a practitioner can orient themselves within social and sensory experience to grasp a better understanding of the explicit and implicit components of the kinesthetic culture. Explicit are those that can be learned through direct or remote instruction of discursive elements and could potentially be mastered alone, but this mastery would not hold up against one that is also versed in the implicit which are those that are unspoken, sensory, and experiential components. These components have a lot to do with “conceptualizations of the body and self” that are sometimes hard to put into words (Samudra 2008: 678).

I trained alone for a number of years when living and working in a remote area in Australia. During that period I worked on speed, power and accuracy constantly, and also reflected a great deal on principles such as the centreline, spin-the-wheel, and draw-the-bow, etc, while training using a pole with points marked upon it, among other things, to increase said accuracy while working on these concepts, and on angles in my footwork etc, also. During the entire time, l did no training with any other people. Upon returning to sparring, I was surprised to find that I had most certainly effectively incorporated all of the things that l had read about and worked on throughout that time. Rather than just maintain attributes etc, I had definitely enhanced them, and had increased my knowledge, understanding and abilities in the martial arts. It is truly a remarkable path in life, in which one never ceases to learn and grow, indefinitely. Peace.

Hello I've been training MMA for almost a year now but I only train once a week because I'm still in senior high school. I rarely spar because I'm very busy studying. But I've sparred more than 6 times now I think and it really helped me to be more conscious about my techniques like doing in n out after attacking and changing angles so your opponent couldn't counter you and timing my opponents rhythm, so I could attack safely without getting countered. I have 1 question is there a way to reduce your flinching alone without a partner. I've already tried tying a key or rock in a rope then swinging it back and forth and try to do some head movements defense on it but I still flinch. I do shadowboxing and heavy bag punching. I think my striking techniques is decent now but my flinch response and defense is crappy. Please respond, thank you.
@AndoMierzwa6 жыл бұрын
Good for you! Training to not flinch by yourself is not easy. Even though it sounds crazy, can you ask someone you live with to spend five minutes throwing punches at your face? They can wear gloves! Just start slow, don't hit back, and focus on staring down those punches and breathing. A little extra practice will go a long way!

There is no "replacement" for practicing with people. On the other hand, there is also no replacement for practicing by yourself. I've never met a skilled martial artists who only practiced at class. Another thing I think is worth considering is that as you practice with people, it informs your solo practice. For stance, let's say you are imagining you are fighting an opponent, well your imagination of what that is like will be more grounded in reality if you have actually done it before. If you interleave solo practice with partnered practice you get interesting results. You practice by yourself for what you feel will improve your next partnered practice, then when you practice with a partner you get to see how your solo practice helped or not. Then you change up your solo practice so it better fits your new understand of your needs, as informed from the last partnered practice where you put your solo training to the test. This cycle of effort builds deep insights which wouldn't be possible if you were only working in partnered practice without any solo reflection or efforts at targetted adaptation.

This is good advice, training something out of your control. That is a fight in a nutshell, you're half a fight, the other half is the other person. You need to be able to control that other half.

This was great, thanks, I've been looking for "self defense activities" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Eonuke Stupendous Equalizer - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is an awesome one off guide for discovering how to self defence techniques to keep your family safe without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got cool results with it.

I used to use a pillow to practice speed, try throwing the pillow in the air, punching it to flip it in the direction you want, then try to hit the flat side of the pillow, and see if you can increase the speed. All the while keeping the pillow in the air with the force of your strike. Use a heavier memory foam pillow or something more dense. This gives good practice for speed and force of a strike. The force of a strike doesn't need to be overdone, just with the right technique.

LOL. I confess. I have used a chair: lying on my back, trying to move it around above me (and hopefully not letting it fall on my face!). I mastered the chair and moved on to tables and ladders and... I'm just kidding. I totally lifted Thor's hammer though... I didn't. I suck.

Good video Ando. I train alone but I also do sparring with friends from time to time, because it is alfa and omega. I can do a lot of good training on my own but I must test my self and see if it works, that is why sparring is so important. Plus it is so much more fun and I just hope that I can do a lot more sparring this year because I always wanna get better at the art.

I actually made my own punching bag yesterday from two thin sofa seats with the back-pillow connected made out of leather ( my mom has a furniture addiction ) put some wood inside for weight, rolled everything together like a kebab with a rope going through the middle attached to a fat stick on the bottom and then rapped it around with duct tape . Ended up looking like a Frankenstein project but I was pretty proud of my creation in the end ^^

Sensei Ando 's training videos are great training aids, he has helped me a lot and I just love his happy life approach. Let's be right, to become good at martial arts you have to put the work in, and a lot of it at that, if you cannot learn to love your art, despite the ups and downs that are part of life, then why bother? As a young man I used to fight constantly, a few months into martial arts I lost the need or maybe better put, the desire to fight outside the Dojo and as a 66yr old who started at 18yrs old if the only purpose was to fight, as opposed to self-defence that I have used very successfully on the 3 times I have been attacked in this time then I would surely have wasted all these decades! I have not, I believe its made be a better human being and most certainly a healthier and happier person!

You're clearly a success story , sir!

I also advocate solo training after partner training. The day after you have a tough class, or you learn some new striking concepts, its nice to experiment with shadow boxing. Play with your visualization, challenge your memory for holding techniques, and work your body through the motions to engrave those techniques into your repertoire.
