Hi Andy, i am currently a 13 year old who is in to kickboxing. And thanks to your video's i have been improving a lot. When I first came to the sportschool (that's what we call it in Holland I don't know the word for it) they thought I was a bit weak and soft. (This was 3 months ago). The master asked me to spar with a guy ( probably the same age as me). The goal was to hit each other 3 times before they could. And I won! That all thanks to your videos! I have been improving and am competing into a tournament soon. I just wanted to thank you for your videos!

Work on slips, pivots, counter punches etc Avoid wraps and gloves- work the bag, don't kill it. Part 2 1. Punch the bag, don't push it. 2. Don't let the bag move u. Find the sweet spot 3. Ando Mierzwa 1. Hands up all the time 2. Footwork (Position before Submission) 3. For a 10 minute workout (First 5 minutes no punching but practice on footwork) a. Bag not moving, move around and feel comfortable b. Move bag, practice keeping distance with hand on bag, pivot out of way of moving bag. c. Shuffle around moving bag 4. Imagination: He hurt your brother 5. Don’t just jab and walk away, punch on your way in (like you’re starting the offense , jab going in then set up for a power shot. Punch on your way out and pivot. 6. Stay alive and alert the whole time. 7. Work the bag, not try to kill it. 8. Hands up, chin tucked. 9. Stay in your stance and thinking your way into the bag and out of the way 10. Move the bag, don’t let the bag move you. a. Find sweet spot (right distance, right balance, right timing with weight shift) i. This goes for long range, medium and short range. Always find right balance and distance to not have bag bounce back into you.

After 25 years of going to classes in Muay Thai, Kempo and Tae Kwon Do, I have transitioned to some other sports (running, OCR, lifting) full time. But I still miss martial arts. I recently installed a heavy bag in my home gym and started incorporating heavy bag work into my training sessions as a warm-up and cool down. IT's been great. Thanks for your videos, they have helped me construct a program that makes sense for where I am now. I always felt when you start something go back to the basics. These videos help.

Thank you this was excellent! going back to basic and humbling down what you think you knew is always a lesson learned. From the two videos, I have understood that punching is really the last thing you want to do and worry about; landing the punch correctly shouldn't be underrated. +Rodrigo Maldonado Father and son boxing together... that's awesome! Everyone is different, but generally, when teaching youth, just make one correction at a time. Don't try to hurry up the learning process. Focus on one thing, like keeping the knees bent or hands up for the whole session. That way, he can get better every time and feel encouraged. Showing him instead of telling him what to do is also great. Make it like a "follow me" drill. You jab, he jabs. You 1-2, he 1-2s. You shuffle and hook, he shuffles and hooks. And record some of that on video so he can watch it back that day, a month or two later when he's even better, or when he visits you in the old folks home! Happy punching!

High carb veganism :) No oil, whole food starches, lenses beans, brown rice, veggies, cutting out gluten (as it is sticky in the gut and hinders effective diguestion, also gluten will be accumulated in the body), some fruits, no processed food but nice self cooked food + some days with intermedian fasting (to clear up the body). Does wonders - for health, the body and condition. Within 1 year I lost 20 kg and gained a nice body - without even trying to loose weight (nor did I train much - or itwas quite less to nothing - I trained even less than before, when I gained weight with fat). I actually did not care. It just happened. And the wonderful thing is: If I do not train, I stay slim. If I train, my body gets in shape - I train nearly daily now- (with some muscles - while woman tend to build up less muscles but it still looks good on them :) - but appearance is not as important as personality, though it is nice, to look out for a body )

Hello Andy! I am a 53 yr old man. Just giving up a few bad habits in the new year and trying to take up a few new ones. I came across your videos. I want to say, I think they're great! In response to some of the silly comments I see, I'd rather have someone's overly nice step-dad teaching me, than some sarcastic know it all, egging me on into some crazy situation. In my view, your appearance adds the element of surprise, unlike mine. My kids have always told me that I look intense. 😆 (I guess that's how I've avoided a lot of conflict over the years) I am a big guy, very stiff though. I could always hold my own through minimal training. I've always had decent strength however, I'm getting older now. I'm trying to learn stretches and I want to learn some training techniques. Earlier today I was firing multiple punch/strike combinations into a full length heavy bag while standing on one leg. Six months ago I would have not been able to do that. It might be a bit easier with Systema strikes than some other techniques, but much of it has to do with a relaxed body and supporting leg.

Second, how many times per week does a person can train punching on a heavy bag? (asking in order to avoid injuries or to avoid reaching a plateau). Thanks again :)
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
Hi Abby! Like any training, it all depends on you. Listen to your body. If you're feeling any kind of soreness or pain, do something else. The idea is to build up your tolerance, not break it down! So, don't overdo it. I think a little every day is better than a lot every couple of days. Especially in the beginning when you want to build good habits, not just get a sweat. Slow and steady, Abby!

as playing baseball growing up and having a decent batting average,and being able to hit the slow pitch softball over 300 ft, playing hs golf and 1 yr college, my secret to scoring better and hitting the goflball farther more consistently was keeping my head focused on the target (the ball) and keeping my head laser still. With the golf swing it made the timing better and i hit some 355-360 yards at times, average 315-330 yards from the tee with this technique to be fair and im 5ft9.5" natty 165 -182 lbs (it varies depending on how much i workout). Hey Sensi could you do a routine for us weekend warriors who dont have a traditional heavy bag, but have a freestanding like the wave master. Thanks.
@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
Joe Green Hey, Joe! Great idea... I'll add that to my list. Quick thought-- the biggest limitations on a standing bag are practicing evasion and counter timing. To make up for that, can you hang up a rope or belt? Even if you're only punching air, that's an easy way to practice your defensive footwork. Otherwise, when I work a standing bag, I'm all about attacking. I start a step or two back then throw combos to get me in and out. Thanks for the suggestion, sir!
@joegreen57149 жыл бұрын
Hang it how? Gotta lot of space and a few feet of rope. What is next? Got a tennis ball hanging to mimic the sway of the heavy bag, but I still would like to know what you had in mind.
@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
Joe Green Yes, same idea as your tennis ball. I might nail/tape the rope to the ceiling or throw it over a rafter so I have something that moves around. Since I kick, too, I would let it hang down to my knees, but waist high works, too. Better than nothing!

I'm a young teen and I've never had any experience at boxing. I'm not a sporty type of girl but I've been getting more interested in boxing as a way to take out my anger plus maybe learn how to fight so I can protect myself a little. There are no trainers around where I live so I'm going to have to kinda teach myself. What are some tips/facts I should know? I weigh like 120 at the most, what size of heavy bag should I use?
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
Hi Destiny! I think boxing is a great idea and will definitely be worth your time! If you can't find a boxing trainer around, how about a Muay Thai club? Or a kickboxing class? You can let your anger out in many ways! As far as bag weight, different bags will teach you different things. A softer, lighter bag will move a lot, so that will develop your footwork. A harder, heavier bag won't move much and will develop your alignment and structure. Bottom line, it's all good! I'd say you should just start with whatever you're got access to and figure out what you like and what you don't like as you go. That's what I do! I would also focus on basics first. Jab, cross, hook, uppercut... and not too hard for a while. Just stay relaxed and find your groove. Power and speed can come later. Anyway, stay in touch and let me know how it's going! Keep punching, Destiny! :)

@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
+Wolfgang Sanyer Great question, sir! Answer--not all punches are the same. You can use them in different ways. For example, you can throw a stiff jab or a snapping jab. You can go for speed, power, or both. You can throw punches top annoy or destroy. Different punches, but always the same tip-- don't give up ground or let your structure break. Nice vid!Just one question- Muay thai centre knee strike...normally you lean the upper body back while striking to get power and range...is this an exeption to your hint of not giving away ground?
@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
+ch K Great question! I'd say there are pros and cons to every move. The point of training is to become aware of each pro and con so you can make smart strategic choices. I mean, every strike you make simultaneously opens you up to a counter, right? So, in the case of the knee, leaning back isn't so bad if you KNOW you're leaning back! The problem would be if you bounced back because you were too close or too weak to bring up your knee without leaning. Hope that makes sense!

I would start with old clothes or sheets. Start a little light and loose in the packing and get heavier and firmer as you go.

@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
james hawkins If I practice with a bag on a stand, I think more about attacking than countering since you obviously don't have anything coming back at you. That puts even more focus on your footwork. Shrink down, explode in, and go for it!

***** Oops, I meant short jabs. Yeah so far so good. my weaker hard should hurts though. O well. Got to throw with less force I guess.

james hawkins Yes, less force! Just focus on alignment, balance, and good habits. Your body will let you know when to hit harder.

These are great videos there. But iam training mma 12 days a month for a year now but i still have fear from neing hit . What should i do to not turn my back to the opponenet during a fight .
@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
adeel ahmad aleko Turning your back is a totally natural reaction, so don't be discouraged. I talk a little about not leaning back in my video: How To Land More Punches. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6rSkJ19p5uDpLc The best thing to do in my opinion is to grab a partner and ask them to throw easy punches at your head. Don't punch back at all! Just breathe, stare down the punches, protect your head, and move. The idea is to practice staying calm all by itself. Later, you can speed up the punches and start punching back. This kind of practice helped me a lot! Thanks for the question, sir!

really good video again thanks a lot and i have a quesiton ; i have been training kickboxing for abouut 1.5 year. in the begining i wasnt able to defence during sparring, i was getting hit lots of times from taller or faster guys(even guys worse than me). now i started to defence better sometimes i almost dont get hit at all but problem is i am bad at attacking and countering. i spar with beginners they throw lots of stupit punches and kicks i can defense i dont get hit but i cant do more. may be i should be more risky and try to throw more punches?
@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
+enes cetinkaya It's great that you spent time practicing defense first. The reward for having a good defense is that you can be confident attacking. So, yes-- attack, attack, attack! You can't win a fight just moving and blocking. Let your punches and kicks fly!

Hey ando I have a question! So i joined a gym and haven’t hit a heavy bag before. Is there any tips on how I should stand so my body doesn’t give ground to the bag? I know I need good distance in measure with how long my arms are, but I wanted to know if there was any thing else with stance that would help prevent me from being pushed back.
@AndoMierzwa7 жыл бұрын
Have you ever recorded yourself hitting the bag and analyzed it? Obviously, it’s hard for me to say without seeing you, but I’ll bet YOU can see areas to improve on your own. So many people lean back without knowing it, or shake their head, or line up their feet... Make as many improvements as you can, and I’ll bet your stance gets stronger and stronger. It may be one big thing or four small things. Take a look!

what is the perfect height for a punching bag? the bottom of the bag should be below our chest or more down?
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
It's up to you! You definitely want the seam at the top higher than your head so you get a solid target. But depending on what you're working on, the bottom can be whatever. Bags come in all different shapes and sizes, so just find one that meets your needs. I personally like a 6 foot bag so I can kick, too.

Hey Sensei Ando. I am Eran from Israel. I am watching you for a long time, I am nearly 24 years a martial artist myself, and let me just tell you- you are an inspiration for me. I look at the mistakes you are talking about, and I say oh shit, I used to do the same mistakes when I begun. For the past 3 years, I suffer from a spinal cord injury, so I had to gear down, but I haven't lost the experience, that is still there. My dream is to establish my own martial arts school, with my own combination art. I have trained in-Vale Tudo, Southern Kung Fu, Goju Ryu Karate, Muay Thai, and weapons. Yet I don't know everything, I learn every day. I have a question- Since I train in bones conditioning (My own training version of Iron Palm) I always look for hard surfaces to strike. I strike concrete and wood directly, and that's okay, because I know how to do it. So, are there heavy bags, that I can buy with sand or gravel? Or to get the bag first, and than the feeling?
@AndoMierzwa3 жыл бұрын
Hi Eran! Sorry about your injury, but love your fighting spirit! 👍🏼 The guys I know who have iron palm bags usually filled them on their own. That way you can pick the exact size of stone you want. Stay safe with that! 🙏🏻

As a beginner is it recommended to use a heavy bag? I'm about 135-140 in weight and 6.0 in height
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
Sure! There are different weights of bag, so just find one that works for you. Ideally, you can find a gym with different bags to mix up your training... or at least play around until you decide which one you want for yourself.
