Everybody dreams of landing a knockout punch on a bad guy. Okay! Here are some tips that might help your martial arts dreams come true!
►Don't forget to take my 7-DAY MARTIAL ARTS CHALLENGE! www.senseiando.com/updates/
WARNING: Knocking someone out is just a fun way of saying "inflicting brain trauma". Do not try to knock out your friends or training partners. Oh--and don't let them knock you out, either! Protect your brain!
When most people think about knockouts, they think about speed and power. But that's not always enough! A more practical formula for a knockout is something I call "The 3 T's." That stands for...
TARGET. A knockout shot should be directed to the head or neck. Any impact to the head can cause a knockout, but the chin, jaw, temple, and behind the ear are particularly vulnerable. I'm sure you already knew that--after all, you were born with a head!
TECHNIQUE. Punches, palms, elbows, knees, kicks... ANY technique can affect a knockout. Your job as a martial artist is to pick strikes you like and then drill them until they are solid and reliable.
TIMING. This is the big one. Beginners think knockouts are all about speed and power, but they're not! The real secret is in how you set up your strikes. Ideally, you set up your strikes in such a way that the bad guy isn't able to block, slip, or roll.
While you might be able to train targeting and techniques on your own, timing requires partner work. You absolutely need someone in front of you trying to hit you and take you down to figure out how to put the right target and the right technique together at the right time.
Now, a word on strategy...
The big mistake people make in trying to land a knockout punch is trying to land a knockout punch! My advice is to throw a combination of strikes with no expectations of a knockout. If one of your strikes leads to a knockout, great! Say thank you and run to safety.
It's also important to remember that someone can be knocked out completely by accident! Maybe you push or hit the bad guy and he either stumbles into a wall and hits his head or falls to the ground. That unexpected reaction might even result in them being crippled or killed!
That's why you should NEVER fight unless you have no choice. You simply never know what will happen. So, if you can talk your way out of a fight, or if you can run to safety, then do it!

Knocking out someone seems to sound great and glamorous. But plz knocking out someone without any life threatening situation is not good. Remember one who is being knockout is human too. He has also family and his life. So before thinking to do it so "think how it would impact you ".

As a martial artist, in which we are trained as a disciplined person, I agree in the last line in which as much as possible, we avoid fights since we don't know what might happen, thank you that I learned here the best to knock out the opponent is not a literal knockout but to knockout a fight, meaning avoid fight as much as possible, just talk then ok unless the situation is against or a threat to your life, its better if possible to knockout a punching bag or dummy or a a person holding with a pad in a training rather than a person him/herself because you dont know maybe a person is a martial artist also which just hids the identity in which we commonly do

My favorite area is the entire jaw line, the reason it works is because of the way it's designed it pretty much serves as a lever to spin the head quickly upon impact that causes the brain to smack against the skull back and forth.

Body...head...body... head...body...body...head...head...(whatever is open) body...body equals liver, spleen, solar plexus and don't forget legs and groin. Doesn't matter what strikes you choose I find that changing it up however you feel is the key to get to the KO. I have trained with masters who believe you can hit three vital strikes to the arm and neck meridians will knock you out but I am old and not that good! Great advice. And I think the tip of the jaw is the best if you can get to it. Great advice Sensei. That is why the martial arts are a combination of art and science!!!

As our sifu always told us: "Mean every strike as a knockout but do never expect them to be." Basically, this means that every strike you land must aim to knock the ennemy out, but the fight isn't over until he lies unconscious on the floor or runs away. This is not a game, it goes on life or death. When knocked out you temporarily lose all of your muscle tonus, which means you go limb and have no control over your fall. A knockout can be deadly if one hits their head or neck while falling down. Don't do it for fun, only if there is no possibility of avoiding the fight or of running away.

Hello Mr. Ando! I have a question. I've started helping teach classes at the Dojang I take classes at. I've been helping for a few months now, but I keep having the same problem. I'm a very quiet and anxious person, so I find myself getting flustered when asked to lead the class and all eyes are on me, or when I'm asked to help a student one-on-one. I know the material, but I always second guess myself. Is there some way to keep from getting so nervous, or do you have tips for teaching in general? Thank you so much, I love your videos!
@AndoMierzwa
@AndoMierzwa 6 жыл бұрын
I have LOTS to say about teaching. You can find a few articles here: www.senseiando.com/?s=teach&submit=Search For me, the more I prepare, the less anxiety I feel. It's not just know the material, it's knowing how to SHARE the material. That is a separate skill set. Learning martial arts is not the same thing as teaching martial arts! So, be patient with yourself the same way you are patient with beginning students. You'll get better! It also helps to focus on YOUR STUDENT and not you. Think about how THEY feel and what THEY need to hear. And don't be afraid to smile! That makes the process more enjoyable for everyone! :)

One of the more consistent spots I've seen for knockouts is striking the pressure point where your jaw meets the bottom of the earlobe (I believe it is the base of the Trigeminal Nerve, it's the boxer's Glass Jaw), similar to what you mentioned, but it tends to get the most results. A lot of the punches to the head tend to affect this nerve indirectly (punching the chin pushes the jaw back into that nerve, kicks to the side of the head occasionally overlap it, and, well the back of the head is a place you attack if you want to kill the person (the cerebellum and the base of the spine are located along the occipital ridge). One of the people I knew who studied aikido also noted that when the knockout occurs, the target's head is usually turned to the side, exposing that target area much more. Personally, I've never knocked out another person. In fact, I have only been knocked out once from a fall, though fortunately the medical tests did not find any damage. I have delivered several TKO's though By that I mean I strike the torso, and my opponent crumples and falls and can't stand up for at least a minute or two. Actually, this tended to occur accidentally too. I had a lot of trouble controlling my strength in high school. That was after a decade of training to be faster and stronger than everybody I fought. The next decade of training, I specifically focused on control and actually weakened myself significantly to minimize mishaps. It was funny because I was on the soccer team and the football team would practice next to us. I remember their coach try to make a point of how tough they were when one of his players was bleeding. Thing is, my school had no rugby or lacrosse teams, which were what I actually wanted to play, so instead I took a rugby player's approach to soccer. I actually terrified the football players because I would hit and take hits more powerful than theirs and I did it without all their pads.

@@AndoMierzwa I'm a big believer in what I refer to as "Constructively Hostility." Somebody insults you, not only prove them wrong, but improve so much that it makes the other person look like they have no idea what they are talking about. An example I had relatively recently was when I was dealing with my legal issues, as the prosecutors tried to indicate that I was reclusive and avoided working on my issues. So, the day I was sentences, I had my lawyer drop a giant stack of papers which were all of the classes I took, pointed out that I even offered to teach one or two, was a mentor, a trustee, and even pushed for getting therapy when it took too long for the jail to call in an outside party to do so by petitioning the mental health staff already in the jail. Essentially, I proved them wrong in every way imaginable because they pissed me off. I even had the two officers who extradited me at the hearing and had them speak about me as well.

Could you do a video on the effectiveness of Wing Chun? I've been very intrigued by this form of self defense and I've both heard and seen a couple videos "demonstrating" how wing chun is ineffective on a practical self-defense situation compared to say, some traditional boxing. Funny that I watched this video just after finding back a flyer from the LASD (08/22/2007) that explains how to NOT be an easy target for the bad guys! They didn't explain it that well. They were not that exhaustive either. Knock-out and brain injuries, sad, very sad. A whole life destroyed! Never again should be the reaction after being knocked-out! And taking action would be those drills explained by Sansei Ando! Thanks, Sensei!

Great video Ando. You and I both know that the most effective knockout punch isn't delivered to the head at all - and I am very pleased you didn't tell all and sundry about it as that would be quite irresponsible - and you clearly are NOT an irresponsible person. The other problem with the knockout punch I am on about is that it can also cause cardiac arrest, even though you aren't striking anywhere near the heart. There are 2 problems with knockout punches to the head, the first obvious one is you have a good chance of damaging YOUR hand. The second problem is that if you are dealing with an aggressive drunk, then they are half unconscious anyway, and a good knockout punch on a sober person may well not be quite so effective on a drunk. That's why I perfected the alternative knockout punch, mainly to deal with unexpected drunken idiots. It knocks them out as effectively as a sober person, and I'm glad to say I haven't stopped a drunk's heart (so far).

All true. But if we leave the knockout target for a moment. And then focus on neutralizing the opponent, then the best timing of my experience is when your opponent thinks or attacks, then the absorption and defenses are reduced and on the other hand the surprise of a counterattack increases. So the best techniques are techniques that combine protection and attack at the same time. I've spent a lot of time getting to the level I can protect and attack at the same time most of the standing attacks, and believe me it's worth it.

Great advice and tips as always, Sensei! However I am quite interested to hear your oppinion regarding fighting a group (2, 3, 5, 15, 20+ people) where you generally don't have the luxury of time and space to "work your way to a knock out" with one individual while others may follow up on the assault or just attack you simultaniously and not just 1 on 1 situations. Situations where idealy you want/need to knock out/disable one individual with one strike so that you can deal with the next incoming attacker. What are your thoughts?
@AndoMierzwa
@AndoMierzwa 6 жыл бұрын
The key issues here are commitment and follow-up. If you over-commit, you're vulnerable... against one or 100. If you don't follow-up, you're also vulnerable. So, I'm saying stay in control and keep fighting. Don't think you're going to just throw bombs and people are going to fall down like bowling pins!
@ChrisKsan
@ChrisKsan 6 жыл бұрын
Ando Mierzwa Thank you, Sensei. Good points. But I'm sorry, I didn't phrase properly. You've stated in your video that you need to "setup your knockout", "you can't always rely on speed and power", "physical project vs strategic project". My question was along the lines: how can you afford to "setup a knockout" with multiple attackers? You'd have little to no time available to setup for one attacker, because you're fighting a group. As I'm sure you know, in real life, in groups attackers don't wait in line to attack like in movies. Sometimes they all jump you at once, therefore you can't afford to "play" with a single opponent, you might not have time to follow up on a single person. I know a few answers myself to this question, being a teacher myself. But I really like your style, I love your work, enjoy your videos and am curious to learn your oppinion. I always enjoy learning from others.
@AndoMierzwa
@AndoMierzwa 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion, sir! I never said to "play" with anyone! I said to never EXPECT a knockout... which means there is no "set-up". You just fight. Fighting is the set-up! The strategy is to attack and keep going, being careful not to throw yourself off-balance in the process. Of course, you'll use all the speed and power you've got, but if the other guy (or guys) are faster and stronger, then it's your mental game that gives you a chance.

is punching from hips ( karate punch ) practical in a fight? most of martial artist practice that technique during training but ended up using boxing technique in real fight instead, can you explain why?
@danpearman270
@danpearman270 6 жыл бұрын
I'd love to see Sensei Ando's answer on this (and now, if he replies, I should also see it :) ) - my own answer would be that a lot of what is seen as 'the karate way' of throwing punches, stances etc is more to do with training the body so it will use the hip correctly, use the full length of the punch/stride/stance etc. The idea being if you kinda overdo it a bit in training, when you shorten up for a real fight and the adrenaline kicks in, you'll still turn the hip enough, extend the punch enough. I think the problem is often just that this point isn't often explained, especially to lower grades. And, of course, a lot of the 'deeper' meanings in karate were lost around the end of the 19th century, so some of it may be misunderstandings. According to some of the texts, for example, the long deep stances seen in Shotokan Karate were added as training stances by Funakoshi Gigo (son of Funakoshi Gichin, the style's founder) in the earlier 20th century, specifically to strengthen legs. His father had always taught a more upright, shorter-stanced style. Similarly, if you can find videos of some of the old masters performing kata (there was at least one featuring Ohtsuka (the founder of Wado Ryu) on KZbin) you'll see that again their stances are higher and shorter. They also rarely if ever kick above the waist, because they were more interested in keeping their balance than throwing flashy head-kicks.

It can be easy to read, but very effective if you have the time for it. If you use a distraction move first or just evaded and use it as counterpunch.
