Through a proper nutritious diet, exercise, and working out.We all know, that with the proper, correct nutrition, we feel so much better in so many ways. For me, being energetic is at the top of the list . Coupling my proper diet, with a proper workout plan, i become like a finely tuned, well oiled machine and unstoppable. Always feeling happy, energetic and feeling and having a very "POSITIVE ATTITUDE" =("ATTITUDE is EVERYTHING") Also ; My self esteem, self belief etc.. has been remarkable, all because of Martial Arts.Learning and Teaching my self, my body how to express myself, how to be free, how to have flow, through our proper and natural body movement,(biomechanical movement) and our natural kinetic chain, along with learning and practicing consistently with the proper intention; all correct techniques for; stretching=being very flexible as well as agile, weight training for strength as well for endurance, all cardio aspects, whether it being simply road work = jogging , or choosing one of the many other choices we have, to get and keep, the most important muscle we have(our HEART) in great shape.(Our cardio), being "one" of the most valuable and important things, we need and must have, in order to win a fight, whether it be for protection purposes or otherwise, especially in regards to self defense, and a potential dangerous or possible life threatening situation, with or without our family members/ loved ones, also being in jeopardy. (BUT; MAKE NO MISTAKE, FOR I GENUINELY, TRULY, REALLY FEEL, THAT BY FAR, THE MOST IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE THING THAT IS NEEDED, AND YOU "MUST" HAVE,TO GIVE YOU A MUCH HIGHER CHANCE AT WINNING ANY FIGHT OR PHYSICAL CONFRONTATION, IS = "BELIEF" IN YOURSELF, AND .YOUR SKILLS) These are my thoughts, my 2 cents. "But most of all", I say Thank You; to Ando Mierzwa, for his very helpful channel. As well, to all Martial Artists in general, especially ones like Ando, who very graciously, put together a channel, with very helpful videos, that in turn, teach those of us who need it, how to do these techniques properly, with the most effectiveness, whether in be for our, "Health=Body,Mind,Spirit", or for our, "self defense=learning to defend and protect our selves and our loved ones, if need be". For extra protection i learned that every time you punch you must bring the shoulder from the side you're throwing from, up to your jaw to block it, it works for all kinds of punches jabs, crosses, hooks and uppercuts, it's a great habit to have, so you leave no openings for your opponent to use.

Maybe for high hooks but not to the lower body. Tyson locked his shoulder down keeping his elbow close to his body, that way he could accelerate and transfer his body weight through his fist without moving his hands too much, effectively hitting with his whole body (max kinetic energy transfer E=Mx(V squared).

One more tip for your collection: its coming from classic Irish Pugilism: Trow the left hook in this way: 1 slip to the left (as mentioned at 3:45) 2. release the hook and end the punch with left thumb facing down hitting with the back of the 2 left big knuckles. That is almost always guarantee no damage to your hand. One of the big disadvantage of the left hook (vertical and horizontal) is the boxing fracture..or hitting with 3-4-5th knuckles and braking the pinky.

Note on any of the three straight punches (from Jack Dempsey's book): keep the hand vertical (thumb up) as it is faster, has more power, the wrist tends to buckle less, and telegraphs less. Also note that when a hook is thrown to the body, the thumb must be facing up because it becomes more of an uppercut it not. Also note that the European hook punch is, typically, done vertical (or opposite to North American).

could you do a video on relaxing/and tensing on the moment of impact in karate. I've done karate for over five years and I've also done kickboxing and jujitsu but I have the hardest time staying relaxed throughout a punch before impact. it seems like the harder I try to relax the more tense my punch becomes.
@AndoMierzwa7 жыл бұрын
That's a tricky topic... so much of striking is just practicing until you get the right feel. And you can hit more than one way. I've actually avoided that topic! I need to think about it...
@wesleyhines40817 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I didn't really take notice until I visited a Machida Karate dojo the other day and the sensei really drilled it into me how tense I was and it was making me lose speed and waste energy. I feel as though certain techniques like my side kicks and back fists I can do just right, but with reverse punches I have a difficult time being able to get that relaxed, snappy powerful movement.
@AndoMierzwa7 жыл бұрын
Maybe just slow down Tai Chi style and examine exactly when you add tension. Just move through the punch and focus on relaxing at all times. As soon as you feel anything getting tight, stop and figure out why. Don't give up!
@wesleyhines40817 жыл бұрын
Ando Mierzwa thanks, I'll give that a try.
@gyorgyimeads5907 жыл бұрын
It may sound odd but try tensing like crazy (on purpose) before going for the strike..It's easier to relax from that state than fight against tension. Then tense up just before impact. Hopefully it teaches your body to relax. Good luck!

I too injured my shoulder throwing a wild right hook on the heavy bag. I reckon the safe way to throw a hook is to make sure the elbow goes no higher than the shoulder. A lead-hand hook (behind a few jabs) is the ultimate punch.

I don't pivot so much on my front foot, and I throw thumb side up for longer hooks, thumb side down for shorter hooks, plus my hooks come up a little, meaning the angle...what are your thoughts on that? It still lands with the elbow behind the fist or slightly lower than the fist. That's how I was taught.
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
Whetever works for you! The angles will change a bit depending on your height and target. There are a million hooks and only one hook, you know what I mean? So long as you're not hurting your hand or shoulder, it's sounds like you're fine.
@georgekondylis67235 жыл бұрын
Many variations possible. If long range hook, then fist almost vertical works very well. This is an important version since coming off a 1, 2 you will fall short if you can’t reach with the three. Also, hooking off the jab is a bit more advanced but very valuable. The sequence is important, but the timing is the icing. Feet, then hips, then a shoulder snap and fist contact. Not hips and shoulders at same time. One good drill I teach is to stand in stance in front of bag or mitt with your fist only 3 to 4 inches from target. Without moving fist back at all , snap the punch. Without the torque buildup as described you will get no power. Btw, this works for all punches. Check out the power of Mike Tyson’s overhand right finches from his opponents head.

Hey Sensei Ando could you do a video with tips on kicking like when to kick in a street fight, how high does the kick need to be, and how to be confident with your kicks.
@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
+astig sa engineer Great questions! Quick answers... Confidence comes with practice. When to kick and how high you kick is a completely personal matter. People have defended themselves with high kicks, low kicks, and no kicks. That's the art part of it. Thanks for the comment!
@somebody76419 жыл бұрын
+Ando Mierzwa so basically it just boils down to practicing your kicks at various heights till you get comfortable with it
@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
astig sa engineer Right. Practice all kinds of kicks and figure out which ones feel good for you. Then focus on those and make them better. Forever! Along the way, your choices may change, but that's just because you're older and wiser!

+Ando Mierzwa Same here, im right-handed but i fight in a southpaw stance... i switch stances of course... i guess Wotan blessed me with power in both hands, but yeah i feel faster in a southpaw stance.
@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
+The Bolt Thrower Same here. I believe Bruce Lee also preferred his strong hand forward, by the way. As you say, in the end, training both sides is the way to go!

Can you make video that shows you how to not break hand when throwing powerful hooks & punches, and where to aim during fight and how to defend easily during fight. Thanks!
@jak7439 жыл бұрын
+Jane hulckison When im throwing my fist i notice that i dont hit the target with knucles first so i dont know how big bend you need to do so you dont just break your hand.
@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
+Jane hulckison I would say do not make every punch a death blow. Focus on accuracy and fitting the first to the target. Like Conor McGregor said, "Precision beats power." If you still don't feel confident in your hook, then stick to the elbow. You're not alone, by the way... punching safely isn't easy!

Some say the hook punch is the hardest punch to teach, but I've learned a simple way of getting it down! First, know to get power in a punch one has to throw a punch without losing your balance(since balance is the most important thing to have in a fight) To do that, one must have a wide base, which is in your legs. Since power is mass × acceleration, your bodies weight times how fast the punch is traveling gives you the force you need for a powerful punch. So having a wide bass(your feet far apart and your legs spread) allows you to put your weight behind your punch without falling over. Once you have that down, use this easy three step method: First, don't turn too far away from your opponent when throwing a hook. Since the power comes from your base, you don't have to overturn to get the force you to need to throw the punch. Try to keep your opponent your front of you and not to turn your back to him/her while throwing the punch. If you can throw the punch without losing sight of your opponent, then you know your not telegraphing or loading the punch. Next, remember to keep your wrist straight and equal to your elbow. Your wrist should make a straight line to your elbow and then another straight line to your shoulder. The arm should look more like a "L" when you throw it then a actual crooked hook. lastly, unlike a straight punch, you don't need to turn your fist to throw a hook. Since turning your fist is to bring your elbow up so you don't hyper-extend your arm, this is unnecessary since a hook can't stretch your elbow. Instead, keep your fist "square" with your thumb facing you so you can make sure to only hit with you big knuckles in your hand. Focus only on making contact with your big Knuckles and not your back smaller Knuckles on your fist, those Knuckles are too small and are not for punching! This may be different from your method and teaching but I've found this way really effective and very easy to learn and teach. try it and see if you agree!

I personally think pivoting your front foot diverts your power (especially if your target is straight ahead of u) hearing from you would be great!
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
Howdy! This video just shows one basic hook punch. It's not the only way to do it! The issue you're raising is the desired line of force, meaning where is the target and what angle do I want to hit it? If you change the angle of attack or the direction you want to move the head, then you'll adjust your fist and foot to match it. Thanks for pointing that out!
@antonioroselli70747 жыл бұрын
No, pivoting your foot is how you generate all of your power. Engaging your hips into the punch and rotating the torso is how you throw your body weight into the punch. If you don't do this you are going to be throwing arm punches, which is going to tire you out incredibly easy, and generate much less force. Try throwing a punch with 300 lbs of force with only your arms, then try throwing a punch with 300 lbs of force when your throwing it with your body weight behind it.

This is how I throw my hooks also! Theoretically I like the idea of the elbow after, however I feel like that can cause people to potentially injure their hand if they’re like “sliding” the small knuckles off the bag. Impacting with the small knuckles on this punch can cause a boxers fracture in the hand. I would make sure the hook is finished then change to an elbow. Basically leave a small beat between the two. In real life blend it quick the way he is here. The adrenaline with not let you take a beat lol.

Thank you for posting this. I just started MMA, having trouble with the hook. I'll be bringing this knowledge into my training today. Quick question: Is there a way to strengthen my wrist right behind the fist? There isn't a lot of muscle there and it has been hurting a little when I throw, especially the hook. Thank you again.
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
Give yourself time, Mike. Try cutting back on the power a bit and just work on perfect alignment. It's like the karate guys hitting a makiwara... it's not really about the knuckles! All day, you can also press on your fist and lean a little on walls. Just to keep the feeling. Slow and steady!

Another inaccuracy is that you need to hit with the two large knuckles. The idea is to hit with surface area and ergonomic correctness. Aim with the two middle knuckles as it gives strength to the hand AND is ergonomically correct. A vertical straight punch is actually better because it is ergonomic and keeps the elbow flair to near zero. A long hook resembles a straight punch but I keep the hand horizontal so I do not hit with the first phalanges of my fist. The short hook can be done to preference. A lower hook/uppercut is, generally, known as a "dig".
