A digital microscope is one of those things you think "I'd never need anything like that!" until you have one... then you discover all sorts of uses. Some meaningful and some just entertaining.

Cool to see the silica under the scope. I worked in a lab testing frac sand. We had northern white sand. We mined it as sandstone, then broke it loose into its individual pieces and sorted it by size, dried it, and put it in train cars

Interesting! Did yours come from underground or open pits? I know there are both types of mines in the midwest for frac sand.

@@saveitforparts It is mined very similar to limestone, remove the layer of organics from the surface, then blast, collect, blast, collect -> continuously. American Petroleum Institute (API) spec has lots of requirements for roundness, crush strength, ect..was pretty cool.

If you want to connect both a laptop and an external monitor to the microscope you could probably just have the microscope connected to the laptop, then the external display also connected to the laptop and set it to duplicate display.

Seems like there really is just some kind of action cam hardware and firmware aside the microscope optical stuff. You could surely just get video from it with OBS as if it was just a webcam even without any software. It wouldn't do the controls though.

And something more: OBS actually offers controls of a webcam. One of my old cameras allows me to control the optical zoom with a panel opened through the source properties.

A very interesting product for sure, though it doesn’t reach the level of a proper microscope setup with a camera port (which is what I have) I will say it would definitely be better than trying to image with a microscope with no way to attach a camera.

Of couse a microscope with a camera port is higher quality, if you are willing to spend multiple times the price of this one.

#saveitforparts Can you help me with a few question? I just bought it and...well it has parts which I have no clue what to do with and I did not get any samples. Maybe the sampels was just for you, but aslo did not get any of the sample glasses and I got this huge aluminium thing, which I have no idead what to do with it. Also no background light which would be very usefull... Thank you, in advance!

Maybe they changed what comes in the package? I know some companies change their products over time, so the same model number might be a little different than when I reviewed it. Sorry I don't know what the aluminum thing is.

Where you find a trilobite pygidium you will surely find complete specimens. Go back there and break up some limestone!
